The California War Chest drive in Anaheim has now exceeded its quota by $4,187 and contributions are still being received at the city hall by Charles Griffith, city clerk. The quota for this district was set at $13,000 but has now reached $17,795 and a large contribution from the California Shipyard corporation is still expected. Outstanding among the past week's donations was that made by the employees of the Douglas Aircraft corporation for the sum of $3,397.20. The contribution was made by 952 employees from Anaheim district, 64 from Cypress and 22 from Stanton. More than $100 has been donated by the Mexican district in Stanton and was a far greater contribution that made by the Mexicans in Anaheim. Charles Griffith revealed that a letter was received this week from the California Headquarters congratulating Anaheim on reaching and exceeding its total and asking that the members of the "splendid organization be congratulated for the fine spirit shown and the success of the campaign." Anaheim Gazette. Lieut. Thomas A. Stricker of Kiron, Iowa 20 mm. shell crashed through the Flying Fortress and knocked out the pilot. Co-pilot Lieut. Stricker took over and kept the big bomber in formation. The objective was a target in Hitler's Europe, and perfect weather was guiding them to it. Now things began happening thick and fast. Yellow-nosed FW-190's roared up like a swarm of angry hornets. Deadly flowers of ack-ack bloomed all around them. But Lieut. Stricker held to the formation and made the bombing run. Enemy fighters tore at the Fortress like vultures at a carcass. Within a few minutes after completion of the bombing run six of the ten crew members lay dead, and the Fortress was critically damaged. Although seriously wounded himself, Lieut. Stricker kept in formation throughout the remainder of the flight. A crash appeared inevitable, but through skillful piloting he brought his bullet-riddled B-17 safely to England. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
