Trents Lose Small Grandson In Tragic Drowning at Beach
Mr. and Mrs. C, E. Trent of 107 North Lemon street are mourning the loss of their little two-year-old grandson, Lyle E. Howe, jr. who was drowned late Tuesday afternoon in the jetty at Seal Beach while playing near the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Howe.
The little boy apparently slipped from the bank and fell into the water and floated some distance before his body was recovered by a group of small boys who were fishing. Though an inhalator was used by the fire department it was too late to save him.
Besides his parents and grandparents he is survived by three sisters, Barbara Ann, Georgia Lila and Linda Lee.
Funeral services will be held at the Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars chapel at 2 o'clock on Friday. Rev. Earl Berg will officiate and burial will be made in Loma Vista cemetery.
Thomas Allan of South Clementine street is enjoying a humorous V-mail Christmas card entitled "Greetings From Britain" sent him by his son, Pvt. George Allan who is stationed in England. Pvt. Allan's address is 100 Bomb Group—Cml. Sest. APO 634. c/o postmaster New York, New York.

4-H Clubs Have Two New Leaders For County Groups
Two new leaders have been secured for Orange County 4-H Clubs. Mr. C. Focht of Tustin, will act as leader of the Tustin agricultural group. Mr. G. C. Huffman of Savanna is acting as leader of the Savanna Plainsmen 4-H agricultural group.
4-H Club work is starting for the new club year. Last year club members earned over $30,000 in Orange County alone. This type of youth activity is of a definite benefit in the agricultural picture of today.
These boys and girls produce products which run into millions all over the United States. Through the efforts of these young people, a definite strain and burden is lifted from our crowded farm program.
These boys, girls, and leaders, are certainly to be commended for the splendid work they are doing throughout the Country. The addition of these two men to their respective positions, will add a great deal to Orange County 4-H Club work.
From the bloody battlefield of Tarawa comes a first hand account of the heroic fight put up by the marines and the navy by one of Anaheim's own men, Lt. j.g.) J. W. Cummins, (D.C.) U.S.N., son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Cummins of this city. The letter written to his parents was dated Nov. 29 and reads as follows:
Dear folks: This is the first chance I have had to write you a letter in quite some time. A lot has happened this month, in fact it took place in four days, that I will never forget as long as I live.
I am speaking about the battle of Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands. Don't let anyone tell you that the Japs aren't fighters because they don't quit until the last man has fallen. They really found out what the saying "the Marines have landed and the situation is well in hand," meant.
Our Marines are the fightingest men you ever have seen. They have plenty of guts and do their work well. I am proud to be serving with them. Of course the Navy upheld its part and did well.
Had some pictures taken on the island and will send them to you. I surely looked a sight as did everyone else.
Have been out of the states for four months today. It seems more like four years. The time goes so slowly. Maybe it will go faster as time goes on, I hope so.
We are on high seas again. Where we are going is hard to say. I hope it is some place for a much needed rest. These men sure do need it.

P.S.: We get ship news every day, which is war news and home news. The other day they had an item about the coal strike. You should have heard the fellows howl. They should send those men out here. Then they would know what low wages are and what it is to face danger.
Tell everyone hello for me.
