"I RISE TO REMARK" By CONGRESSMAN JOHN PHILLIPS Molasses is a sticky subject. There are 355,000,000 gallons of molasses potentially available in the Caribbean area; in Cuba, San Diego, and Porto Rica. The office of Economic Warfare made this estimate a few days ago and pointed out that this alcohol was urgently needed in the United States for both munitions and synthetic rubber programs. Consumers are interested because this molasses, if shipped to the United States, would release 50,000,000 bushels of wheat for food or feed. That amount of wheat is enough to provide 12½ million men, women and children with bread for one year, or to provide enough feed for the production of 375,000,000 pounds of pork. It could be translated just as easily into poultry or beefsteaks. In recent months about 5 million gallons have been shipped monthly from Cuba on smaller boats. A sufficient number of tankers has now been allocated to move all the off-shore molasses supply. A WSA representative said in so many words, "The shipping shortage is not an obstacle at this time." The reason is entirely one of price. War agency officials have decided that they cannot move this molasses to the United States until it has been purchased by the Defense Supplies Corporation. The price offered by DSC to the owners of the molasses in Cuba and Porto Rica is below that pre-requisite price. Sugar Ration Remains Same Consumers will use stamped ber 29 in the new ration book for buying sugar after November 1, the Office of Price Administration announced today. The stamps in book four, which are distributed before the end of the month are numbered 29 to 40, and will be found on the page of the book. All of them are marked "sugar". Stamp number 14 in ration one, which has been good pounds of sugar since August will expire on November 1st, announced, while stamps number 16, which have been good pounds each of canning sugar expire on October 31. This decision to move the masses only after it has been purchased by the DSC is an accidental decision. The current price on molasses, in Louisiana, Florida is 18 cents per gallon is the ceiling price set by the DSC is offering only cents per gallon for the supply and was offering less than for the Porto Rican market. The farmers have taken the tion that they will not sell, of the much higher prices paid for molasses produced mainland. Their position is standable. In spite of DSC refuses to yield. As a result of this confusion delay, the alcohol distillate the United States continues grain for the manufacture cohol, seriously cutting in supply of food stuffs for poultry and hogs, and in supply of wheat for consu AMERICA'S MOST FAMOUS JACKET THE ONLY GENUINE WINDBREAKER REG. The sugar stamps in book four, which will be distributed before the end of this month are numbered 29 through 50, and will be found on the last page of the book. All of these are marked "sugar". Stamp number 14 in ration book issue, which has been good for 5 pounds of sugar since August 16, will expire on November 1st, OPA announced, while stamps 15 and 16 have been good for 5 pounds each of canning sugar, will expire on October 31. Milling for molasses in the main and markets. This decision to move the mollasses only after it has been purchased by the DSC is an arbitrary decision. The current price ceiling for molasses, in Louisiana and Florida is 18 cents per gallon. This is the ceiling price set by the OPA. The DSC is offering only 5 5/8 cents per gallon for the Cuban supply and was offering less than that for the Porto Rican molasses. The farmers have taken the position that they will not sell, in view of the much higher prices being paid for molasses produced on the mainland. Their position is understandable. In spite of protests, DSC refuses to yield. As a result of this confusion and delay, the alcohol distilleries of the United States continue to use grain for the manufacture of alcohol, seriously cutting into the supply of food stuffs for cattle, poultry and hogs, and into the supply of wheat for consumers in the United States. SOYBEANS TO HAVE MANY NEW USES Long the hothouse flower of the industrial laboratory, soybean milk has made its debut, engineered of course by industry which all these years has experimented with its possibilities. Introduced at a World Neighbor Luncheon, a menu of soybean foods and liquids was presented to the world's housewives as an important factor in rehabilitating war-devastated countries where dairy herds and food sources have been destroyed. Here soybean milk, formerly tasted and tested only in the laboratory, appeared as a beverage, in a soft cream custard, in rich delicious ice cream, "JEEP" DRIVE Many thousands of dollars earned by southern California students during the summer vacation are now being poured into school jeep drives, swelling War Bond and Stamp purchases to such an extent that even last semester's exceptional record no doubt will be exceeded by the close of the campaign on December 7. Though schools have been in session less than a month, the enthusiasm with which the new campaign is being received by students is reflected in sales reports already received by the "Schools-at-War" Education section. Students in 650 southland schools, participating in last semester's jeep drive, bought 3195 jeeps with War Bonds and Stamps. Nearly 1800 southland schools are expected to participate in the current drive. WHITE TEMPLE METHODIST ... The Rev. T. L.
