Producers Cooperative Marks 50th Year
The fiftieth year as a citrus marketing cooperative is being observed this fall by the California Fruit Growers Exchange, one of the largest and most successful producer cooperatives in the country. Founded in 1893 when the California citrus industry shipped less than 6000 cars of fruit per year, the Exchange has grown constantly and in 1942 shipped 75% of the California-Arizona total of 114,000 cars of oranges, lemons and grapefruit. Under the trade name "Sunkist", the first grade fruit of Exchange shippers has earned world wide recognition. Shown above is the central office in Los Angeles while immediately below is a packing house scene of the Gay 90's. Woman's place in California citrus groves is shown in the pictures of the attractive orange picker and packers.

In June he attended General Conference held in Winona Lake, Ind., and preached at the opening session.
California Farms Pay Dividends
In a report issued by the research department of California State Chamber of Commerce, it was revealed that the state's farmers and livestock producers received the sum of $478,755,000 in payment for their products in the first five months of 1943.
This was an increase of nearly 42 per cent over the corresponding five months a year ago, as compared with a 36 per cent increase for the United States as a whole. Cash farm income from California crops during the same period showed a 57 per cent increase over 1942, and totaled $289,746,000.
New Walnut Shaker Being Tested In Anaheim Groves
Anaheim walnut groves are numbered among three Orange county areas, including also Santa Ana and the Irvine district, where field tests are in progress this week to determine the adaptability of the newly devised walnut tree shaker to Orange county walnut orchard conditions.
Tests are being made by growers in cooperation with the office of County Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg. The latter with Dr. Arthur Davey, pomologist at University Farm, are making test counts and observations on the percentage of immature "stick-tights" shaken from the tree at various intensities of shaking.
The first mechanical shaker to be used in this country was constructed by the Irvine company. According to Farm Advisor Wahlberg it appears to be a solution to the present shortage of labor in the county groves. But since it is an entirely new venture there are many problems to be considered and worked out.
The present series of field tests will help answer some of these problems it is believed since they are being made on both budded and seedling trees, on various soil types, and at different periods of maturity. Similar surveys are to be made by the Agriculture Extension Service in most of California's walnut producing areas.
Figures for last year show that nearly 60 per cent of the nation's citrus fruits were produced in California and that the state produced the nation's supply of olives and lemons. During the one year California producers received an income of $202,264,000 from vegetables and truck crops.

We and the folks are staying close to home this year
Service men on furlough and other essential war travelers now have the "right of rail" with Southern Pacific. It's the railroad's job in war-time to carry such travelers wherever they need to go, and without delay. If you don't need to take the train, we hope you won't.

nels will not be until November 22, the date set for the annual mailing, and volunteer workers will find a busy time ahead in folding the sheets of seals ready for their envelopes. This will be the 37th annual sale of Red Cross Christmas Seals, whose use has made possible the control and treatment of tuberculosis among untold thousands.
Mrs. Edna Hewitt Crawford, executive secretary of the county association, has pointed out that the task of preparing the seals for mailing out to customers is greater than ever this year, because of wholesale changes in bringing mailing lists up to date. Every attempt is being made to have every envelope properly addressed in order to simplify the work for the county postoffices, where increased volumes of mail and lessened staffs make the work difficult at best. Mrs. Hewitt expressed the opinion that workers are doing such a good job that everyone on the association's mailing list would receive his seals on November 22, the opening day.
