HEAD SUNDAY JULY 5th county for the fiscal year ending June 30, totalled $6,653,891. This averaged $45.89 per person for the year 1942-43, a drop from the $50.20 per capita levied in the previous year. The total sum includes levies of counties, cities, schools and other districts. The association pointed out that some irrigation and reclamation districts not reporting centrally, are not included since data for such districts were not available. General city levies in this county reached the total of $1,595,219 while levies for county current purposes amounted to $1,598,916 and for county bonds, $65,469. Levies for the county's school districts amounted to $2,226,698 for current purposes and $438,958 for school bonds. Special district taxes amounted to $728,631. Other investigations by the association showed that property tax levies throughout the state amounted to $316 million dollars for the year just closing, a drop of $3,350,000 from the tax levies of the previous year. The association pointed out the opportunity for further tax reductions in the coming year. This opportunity is based on the halving of old age aid; loaning of civil government employees to war industries without appreciable curtailment of essential services, and the lowered enrollment Annual Vacation Church School Closes Tomorrow After a highly successful two week's session, this city's fifth annual Vacation Church school will come to a conclusion tomorrow with what has come to be one of the happiest and most anticipated features, the annual "beach day." This year however, the hundreds of children who attend the Vacation school, will not be taken to the ocean but instead will be entertained with all the beach pleasures possible, in the beautiful city park. The day's school routine, opening at the usual morning hour, in White Temple Methodist church, will be much abbreviated and the youngsters and their teachers and aides will repair to the park at 11:30 a.m. to enjoy the fun fest arranged for them until 2 p.m. Early plans had included swimming in the park plunge, but this had to be given up due to necessary health precautions. All the youngsters were disappointed, but took the announcement cheerfully. To compensate for this loss, the school leaders have planned a "penny scramble" when 500 pennies will be tossed out for the youngsters to seek and claim; all the cold punch that they can drink, full use of the park's games and athletic equipment, and a succession of lively contests for various age groups. While the school activities will close officially at 2 o'clock the children will be welcome to continue their games and play in the park for the remainder of the afternoon, although it will be without teacher supervision. Don Earl Boatman, general superintendent of the vacation school, today expressed Anaheim Gazette — T Bolo Knife Fund Will Help Equip Filipino Troops In Los Angeles there is a little 5-year-old Filipino girl, Norita Pablico, who is so determined that her daddy, George Pablico, shall be properly equipped with a bolo knife when he goes out against NORITA PABlico the Japs in mortal combat in Filipino jungles, that she contributed her savings of five dollars to the fund now being subscribed for the purchase of these knives. Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce is sponsor of the fund, and generous contributions from Southland individuals, service clubs and civic organizations have almost reached the total of $225,500, set for the purchase of 450 bolo knives. The Rev. Don Earl Boatman, general superintendent of the vacation school, today expressed personal appreciation for the cooperation of the 70 or more workers from various churches who have aided in making this the most successful and largest school of the five years. More than 700 children were enrolled. These teachers, leaders and assistants are anticipating their "workers' breakfast" tomorrow morning at 8 o'clock in advance of the day's program. In addition to reminiscences of amusing events of the past two weeks, will be plans for next year's session, election of a general superintendent, and choice of a host church for the school. These will be distributed among members of the Filipino regiment which is now training here in Southern California for jungle warfare. The knives are being made by the U.S. Spring and Bumper company, which is also sorbing all costs except for actual material and labor, according to Albert Rebel, chairman of the fund committee. Rebel, who is export manager for Super-Gold corporation of Los Angeles, is donating his time to the campaign, as is every worker connected with it, so that even dime subscribed goes directly to the bolo knives, the native weapon on the Philippine Islands. The knives have been promised for immediate delivery by the company making them, and will then be distributed among the Filipino regiment members.
