Cash Income From California Farms Topped Billion Dollars in 1942
Here in the heart of the Southland's lush agricultural district, it seems especially important news that California's cash farm income, for the first time in history, has exceeded a billion dollars. California State Chamber of Commerce has released results of its recent survey, showing that the year 1942 saw a total farm income that was $147,895,000 in excess of a round billion, an increase of 31.3 percent over the 1941 income.
This huge sum was made up of crop returns to the extent of $758,423,000 (66.07 percent), livestock products, $374,978,000 (32.67 percent) and government payments, $14,494,000 (1.26 per cent).
California alternates with Iowa year after year in the value of farm products. In the past year it ranked first by a wide margin in cash income from crops, but dropped to eighth place in cash income from livestock and livestock products, although it aggregated 29 percent more than in the preceding year. Leading items in this classification were, in point of income, dairy products, cattle and calves, poultry and eggs.
Cash farm income from crops represented 11.7 percent of the national cash farm income from this source. The state's dozen leading crops were oranges, grapes, cotton, lettuce, peaches, tomatoes, lemons, dry beans, potatoes, hay, barley and prunes.
During the year 1942, the state's crops which contributed from 90 to 100 per cent of the nation's cash farm income from the particular crops in question, were almonds, lemons, olives, figs, plums, walnuts and apricots. Contributing from 65 to 89 per cent were lettuce, canteloups, peaches, pears and dry edible beans.
Traffic Victim Is Laid to Rest After Final Rites
Tragedy invaded the A. W. Lansdowne home on Route 2 late last week, when the life of Delayne Lansdowne, elder son of the home, was snuffed out in a traffic accident occurring Friday on North Citron street near the high school.
The young man, riding a bicycle, collided with a car driven by Kenneth Keith Burdin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth V. Burdin, 402 South Philadelphia street, and was injured so seriously that death resulted shortly after his removal to Lutheran hospital.
A coroner's inquest called Monday morning at the Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary, ruled that both drivers were equally negligible in operation of their vehicles.
The Rev. Don Earl Boatman, pastor of First Church of Christ, conducted the sad funeral rites for young Lansdowne Tuesday morning in the Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars chapel, and burial was in Loma Vista cemetery. In addition to his grief-stricken parents, the young man was survived by his brother, Larry Lansdowne of the home; his maternal grandfather, Franklin B. Faust of Columbia, Ind., and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. A. B. Lansdowne of South Whitley, Ind.
Fellowship Honors Active Worker In TB Association
Of much interest to the Anaheim community where the Rev. Nicholas B. Davila, pastor of Santa Ana Latin-American Methodist church is well known as field representative of Orange County Tuberculosis and Health association, is announcement that he has been granted a fellowship at the summer session of University of Michigan.
News of the fellowship, made possible through the National Tuberculosis association, was revealed by Mrs. Homer G. Ames of the city, secretary of the county association. Hr. Davila's required study course will include field problems in tuberculosis control, methods and materials in school health education, and principles and methods of school health.

Highway Ass'n Convenes Saturday
Imperial Highway association members are to meet Saturday evening in a noted landmark, the home of the late Charles F. Lummis former Los Angeles news-paperman and recognized authority on California history and art. The home, located at 200 East avenue 43, Los Angeles, has been converted into a museum since the death of Mr. Lummis. Highway association members are to be served a Spanish dinner as a feature of their session.

by giving up your summer train trips
High point in many a service man's life is his short leave or furlough after months of strenuous training. This is often his last chance to visit home before going overseas — a last chance to see his parents, wife or sweetheart.
Furlough days are far too precious to be spent waiting for train accommodations. Yet nowadays our trains are so crowded that even service men on furlough sometimes have to "wait their turn."
Will you help make more room on our trains for service men and other essential war travelers this summer?
Please cancel reservations promptly if your plans change — release this space for use by other travelers. Postpone all train trips of a merely social, sight-seeing or pleasure nature until after the war.
This summer — unless your train trip is urgently necessary — you can do your country a real service by staying close to home!

Rise to Remark
By Congressman John Phillips
The list continues.
Paul R. Porter is chief of the Ship Building Stabilization Branch of the WPB, at a salary of $8,000 a year. He is a life-long Socialist, and one of the leading members of that party in the United States, and I respect him for the fact that he has made no secret of this, and has attempted no evasion. His attitude toward constitutional government and toward the Republic is best understood by quoting from one of his many writings: "Nothing less than a Socialistic resolution will free labor from insecurity and industrial system." Through the generous salary provided Mr. Porter by the government he has attempting to overthrow, Mrs. Paul R. Porter was also able to take charge of the Washington office of the "Union for Democratic Action," an organization which in the last campaign distributed a million copies of a highly inaccurate and libelous attack upon members of Congress.
John Herling is employed in the office of Co-ordinator of Inter-American Affairs, at an annual salary of $5,600. In the early days of the present national administration, he was offered a position in the government here in Washington, to which he replied contemptuously, "I believe in the abolition of the Capitalistic system. I believe in the necessity of the destruction of this system of exploitation by the might of workers' organizations. I decline to be even an insignificant member of a government which, after a year of displaying its brand of social engineering, has devised such a positive, direct and universal scheme for workers' enslavement."
Perhaps the later offer of a salary of $5,600 a year persuaded him to become one of the many termites in the gover materials. Mr. Loeb is a "technocrat" and advocates the abolition of money and the substitution of "erg certificates" to be distributed to every citizen at the rate of 20,000 a year. He is also the author of three books, generally classed as obscene. For further information (but not for the obscene passages!) refer to the Congressional Record for February 1, 1943, page 511.
Washington is full, in the administrative agencies, of bright young men and women who apparently feel themselves called upon to take advantage of this emergency for the purpose of substituting some form of National Socialism for the Republic. This is a fundamental clash of philosophies between the administrations of 1918 and of 1943. It cannot be reconciled. One or the other must survive. Washington, at Valley Forge, in a similar crisis, said something which might well be the solution to this one of the four problems under discussion, "Put none but Americans on guard tonight!"
GARDEN GRAMS
If the lower leaves on string beans, cucumbers, and squash are turning yellow, be suspicious of red spider or the two-spotted mite which is yellowish in color and causes damage like the red spider. Both these insects have shown up in large numbers in the last few weeks. Dust thoroughly with sulphur or with a cryolite 50 percent sulphur 50 percent mixture. The latter mixture will control cucumber beetle (diabrotica) and other chewing insects as well as red spider.

Santa Ana Named To Head New Farm Labor Office
Among various matters coming to attention Friday of those touring the North Orange county camps for Mexican Nationals, we will be the appointment of George Wells of Santa to head the state of the new Farm Labor office, 47 West Fifth street, Santa Ana.
Both Wells and Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg were among the interested "tourists" of the labor camps, and outlined briefly some of the operations of the newly instituted office. Its purpose is the recruitment and supply of labor to meet the needs of Orange county agriculture, and the office has the support of Orange County Food Production committee.
Originally scheduled to be underway by July 1, the office already open for receiving applications from those who want work or part time work in the county groves, fields and orchards. Associated with Wells as general manager will be Don Park, formerly of the U.S. Employer Service, as field man, with second field man to be named and Mrs. Elizabeth Roberts as office secretary.
Wells has been giving seven days a week to work on the Santa Ana ration board but is still drawing from that activity she the new post will demand full time. Farm Advisor Wahlberg is general supervisor for labor recruitment under the re-setup. Such recruitment already had been under way on a voluntary basis, by the Orange County Food Production committee.
Need of the new office has been emphasized by Wahlberg, who warned county farmers again.

Harold Loeb, until about a year ago, was a "business specialist" for the OPA. Today he is "senior economist in building materials" for the War Production Board, at a salary of $4,600 a year. I would like to cite Mr. Loeb's qualifications for this technical position, which an innocent young Congressman like myself would suppose should include some knowledge of building plant tomatoes. Commercial growers are in the midst of their planting season now. String beans, lima beans for green use, summer squash—a wide list of vegetables—can be planted now. Don't try cabbage or cauliflower in the interior parts of the county, or celery either. Leave those for an August or September planting. Leaf lettuce, romaine nud carrots are O. K. now. So are beets, but head lettuce should be avoided.
It's corny! Corn earworm moths are laying corn earworm eggs which will become corn earworms on sweet corn. If the moth comes along before there is any silk on which to lay her egg (this is their favorite spot) eggs will be deposited at the base of the ear, on stalk near a leaf, or in the tassel. Dig out these early intruders and be ready to put ten drops of pyrethrum-oil in the silk when the tips of the silk turn brown.
Sewage Disposal Reports Given
A total of 53,749,400 gallons of waste from the city of Anaheim during the month of May, was reported to the city council by Ewald Lemcke, maintenance engineer of the Joint Outfall sewer district. The amount, representing 44.7 per cent of the total for cities in this sanitary district, placed Anaheim well in the lead. Fullerton, whose flow usually equals and sometimes exceeds that of Anaheim, reduced its flow to 26,348,100 gallons in May, or 22 per cent, by the present method of disposal whereby waste waters from large canneries are spread over a certain area of ground.
The youth, who will be 18 years old next January, and who is son of the Edwin L. Miller Corona Del Mar, has a host of friends in this city who are keenly interested in the honor him by the scholarship award which is the state's Southern institution scholarship granted for scholastic records. In addition having the highest scholastic athletic standing in his class, young man was also student president.
He passed the Navy V-12 aminations with equally honors, so is not yet certain whether his studies at Dartmouth will be in preparation for a diplomatic career or a continuation of the Navy program.
His relatives were in Los Angeles Monday evening to bid God-speed on his departure to Cleveland, Ohio, where he visit the birthplace of his great father, L. E. Miller. His ship is for the full four-year course at Dartmouth, but in cordance with the program acceleration being adopted by colleges, it will be condensed three years.
Like a single flag in the "Wigwag" system, the purchase of a War Savings Stamp or Bond, in itself has an infinitesimal effect upon the entire war effort, but when 130 million determined people set their minds to make our War Bond drives successful, the result is anything but infinitesimal.
