Joining The Battle Line
Haven't your pulses leaped when you've read in the papers or heard on the radio, some of the daring exploits of those courageous boys of ours on the far battle fronts of the world? Some of them are youths whom we have known right here in our home community of Anaheim, have watched as they progressed rom their first lost tooth to their graduation from Union high school, from there mischievous raids on an unsuspecting neighbor's fruit tree to their first blushing "date."
"How I wish I might be a fighter too," you have sighed. "I wish I didn't have to keep plugging away at this monotonous job and counld do something really big for my country."
All right, you can! You can, and I can, and so can John Smith at the corner grocery, and Mary Jones, teaching those youngsters at the grade school, and Mary's mother, busy at home duties, andohn's father, trudging his postman's route. All of us can make a vital contribution to the war effort.
We can help fight this war on the most important front of all—the Food Front.
We have the word of the Commander in Chief of the country's fighting forces, President Roosevelt that food in this war is of equal importance with planes, tanks and guns. And this year, the need for food, especially canned food, is greater than ever before.
All these oranges, fruits and vegetables grown right here in the Anaheim area, processed by our local plants, are of vital importance. They are needed just as much as are those lads that we send away with a brave smile—and a breaking heart.
But these important foods must be harvested, processed and packed before they can be of service. When this is accomplished (and it MUST be accomplished) they will help feed our fighting men, our courageous Allies, and the starving little children in distant lands to whom they will be truly a Godsend.
These very war conditions create a scarcity of workers. Yet such crops cannot wait. They must be harvested swiftly — and processed just as swiftly.
Anaheim heeded a call for help when the spinach crop was threatened with total loas. Business men and women, housewives teachers, students turned out with a will and met that emergency.
Will you all do it again? Right

Local Men Offered Opportunity For Seabee Enlistment
Offering Orange county men of draft age the opportunity of receiving a petty officer rating in the Navy, Lieutenant Willis B. Hayes, Jr., Civil Engineer Corps, USNR will spend all day Saturday only, April 24, at the Navy Recruiting station, post office bldg., Santa Ana.
Men with experience in construction fields are desired particularly. Carpenters, plumbers, electricians, heavy equipment operators and other artisans may apply for voluntary induction into the Navy's construction battalions and will be assured a rating upon their acceptance providing they meet with all requirements and come in under the quota set.
Lieutenant Hayes' recommendation will be the first step toward the petty officer goal for Orange county men. Those recommended will be furnished with transportation to the Los Angeles Navy Recruiting station where they will be given a physical examination. If found sound, the applicants will be released through their draft boards and earmarked for the Navy's Seabees—"the build-in'est, fightin'est outfit in the world"—with rating up to chief petty officers.
The Santa Ana recruiting station will remain open from 8 a.m. Saturday and as late as required to take care of the influx of Navy candidates expected to apply under this new plan. It is necessary that applicants be cleared by an officer of the Navy Civil Engineer Corps before they can be considered for voluntary service with the Navy's Seabees. Men 38 to 50 also are eligible.
Fine of $300 For Civilian Display Of GI Insignia
Dear Girlie: If you have been wearing military insignia given you by your GI boy friend it would be better if you didn't in the future. You may face a $300 fine if you don't change.

parlor will receive its charter at the formal institution ceremonies. These will be held in Elks clubhouse and will be open to the public after a closed session when new members will be initiated.
The charter, which already boasts more than a hundred signatures, will be kept open until the night of the institution ceremonies. President-elect Tuffree presented the longest list of members at the recent meeting, thereby winning a cash prize offered by Roy Mendoza, temporary chairman, and Woody Wade, district deputy grand president. This prize was immediately turned over to the homeless children's committee of which Ben Hiss, Los Angeles, is chairman.
Hiss was among those making short talks, the list including also Clarence H. Hunt, editor of "The Grizzly Bear," the organization's magazine; Walter H. Odemar, grand trustee; Judge Reuben Schmidt of Los Angeles county superior court; Eldred Meyer of Santa Monica, past grand president, and various others including the several district deputies who were dinner hosts.

Naval aviation, that branch of the U.S. Navy which has dealt so many decisive blows to the enemy, was explained in full detail to Anaheim Union high school students at a recent morning assembly, when Lieut. James L. Brader was guest speaker.
Lieut. Brader is a member of the Naval Aviation Cadet Selection board, Los Angeles, and his talk was of special value to young men of the graduating class, since he explained the eligibility of seniors and graduates in the 17-year-old bracket, for the Navy's flight training program.
According to his explanation, applicants who are accepted as Apprentice Seamen in Class V-5 before May 1 will have opportunity to obtain eight months of college training in addition to the regular 17-month course in aviation.
He described the steps to be taken by such applicants, and emphasized the necessity of their remaining in school until their graduation. Naval aviation cadets will be commissioned as ensigns in the Naval Reserve or as second lieutenants in the Marine Corps Reserve upon completion of the entire training program.
PATRIOTIC PROGRAM
All former and visiting Illinois residents now in the Southland have received notice of the patriotic program to be held Saturday in Sycamore Grove park, Los Angeles, in observance of the bicentennial anniversary of the birth of Thomas Jefferson. Los Angeles Supervisor John Anson Ford will speak on "Thomas Jefferson and the World Today." A variety of musical numbers will feature many gifted guest soloists.

The War department recently
banned the sale at post exchanges
of ornaments, insignia, and other
articles of the uniform that are
issued by the supply services.
This measure became necessary
because many civilians have been
wearing the insignia of various
services, contrary to army regulations 600-40, Aug. 28, 1941.
Penalty for violation of this
ruling may include the cash fine
or imprisonment, not to exceed
six months.
