SUPPLIERS FOR THE HOME FRONT * War Food Rations Affect Japanese At Manzanar Camp Answering many questions asked in this community as to the manner in which food rationing affects former county residents among the Japanese now in war relocation camps, is a communication from the Office of War Information regarding menus and food supplies at the Manzanar camp. Southern California OWI released the information, as supplied by Ralph P. Merritt, project director. It stated that community mess halls at Manzanar set a typical war-time table, with no eggs, no butter, less sugar than the civilian quota, and coffee limited to one cup a day per adult. Meat is served sparingly, with no steaks, chops nor roasts. The meat ration averages well below the voluntary rationing figure requested of all civilians by the OPA, it was stated, and since purchases for the Manzanar kitchens are not charged against civilian quotas, they do not deprive other Southland communities of meat. Merritt's report revealed that the evacuees have already become self-sustaining to the extent that this first year, even allowing for a late planting, they grew more than $40,000 worth of vegetables to be used in the community mess, thereby releasing a corresponding amount of fresh vegetables for civilian consumption. In planning a repetition of this event for Public Schools Week, Anaheim schools are cooperating with the state committee. This will be the 24th annual observance of the event, which is under direct sponsorship of the Masonic fraternity. Leslie E. Wood; grand master of California grand lodge F. and A.M. already has asked the state's 126,000 Masons to give their fullest cooperation. Anaheim lodge No. 207 under W. M. Seward will be sponsor of the local observance. New Ration Order Is Big Surprise To Entire Nation (Continued from page 1) sister and the 10-year-old twins who go through shoes like a warm knife cutting butter—that's a different story. But no doubt it's a problem that time will help solve. Anyway, it's nearly time for the kids to go barefoot. Of course, Dad and Mother may still have their comfortable house slippers. And the soft-soled shoes for the baby are not to be rationed. Nor are rubber galoshes and storm slippers. But Big Sister isn't going to be able to buy frivolous dance slippers, nor anything with heels exceeding two and five-eighths inches in height. And when present manufacturers supplies are exhausted, there will be only black, white, brown and russets from which to make a choice. But after all, we don't need that shoe leather like our boys at the front do. For regardless of Napoleon's famous pronouncement as to what an army travels on, we've got to remember that its feet must still be adequately shod. To Those In Service PRISONER OF WAR That S/Sgt. According to the new ruling, practically every man called before the local body will be held for either full or limited military service. All except those who are placed in class one and those who are declared as totally disabled, will be referred to the medical advisory board. Sheriff C. E. Jackson was in town Tuesday on official business also circulating among his numerous friends here. The sheriff is being highly commended for the swift action of himself and deputies in ferreting out the murderer of Leonard Herwick, and placing him under arrest, also for his efficiency in guarding and protecting the prisoner when his life was threatened by a mob. Keyes has been found guilty and will pay the full penalty for his crime, and the county was saved the disgrace of having a lynching within its borders through the prompt action of Sheriff Jackson. Some of the wags of the neighborhood have decorated it with a sign reading, "no fishing allowed." The puddle is a source of annoyance to travelers and should be abated by the Trustees. A band of several hundred sheep were driven through town on Sunday evening bound for Los Angeles, where they will be slaughtered for the market. They were unusually fat, having just come off the lush grasses of the Alamitos. The amount of rain fall during the last storm, according to Mr. Dickel's gauge, was 1.96 inches. Total for the season 9.41. The remnants of a highly intellectual Santa Ana wind, which blew a gale at Riverside as evidenced by the clouds of dust over in that vicinity, reached this city yesterday. Mr. Chynoweth will shortly move into the office in the Helmsen building adjoining this editorial office. The premises were recently occupied by Attorney Melrose. The world has ceased to pay any attention to the prophecies of German militarists. What about those predicted Christmas dinners in Paris and Petrograd? What about the declaration that England would be brought to her knees in ninety days by the U-boat blockade? What about the prophecy that America would never declare war against Germany and that she wouldn't amount to anything if she did? Mr. and Mrs. L.
