(AP)—Public sale of canned fruits and vegetables will stop throughout the nation at midnight, Feb. 20, and will resume on a tightly rationed point basis March 1. These official dates were announced tonight by the Office of Price Administration. The order also applies to all frozen fruits and vegetables, dried fruits—(but not dried vegetables)—canned soups and canned baby foods. MARCH ALLOWANCE For March, the first ration period, the housewife will ahve 48 points for every member of the family to spend on rationed goods. CAN LIMITATION Before getting the new ration book, however, each family will have to declare how many cans the family had on hand on Feb. 21. From this number will be substrated five cans for every person in the family, and coupons from the new bok will be torn out for any cans in excess of five per person. However, this count of cans will exclude home-canned goods and certain types of nonrationed cans such as canned olives or jellies and all cans containing less than eight ounces (mostly small cans of baby food). The rationing clerk will want one other piece of information— These official dates were announced tonight by the Office of Price Administration. The order also applies to all frozen fruits and vegetables, dried fruits—(but not dried vegetables)—canned soups and canned baby foods. MARCH ALLOWANCE For March, the first ration period, the housewife will ahve 48 points for every member of the family to spend on rationed goods. For instance, a can of peas may require 10 points while a can of spinach may cost 5 points, and so on. The eight days between Feb. 20 and March 1 will be used for two purposes. Grocers will stock their stores, mark point values and train employees. REGISTRATION START The public will use the period to line up at schools, churches and other public places to get new ration books. This registration will begin Feb. 22 and run for six days. Everyone who has War Ration Book No. 1 for sugar and coffee will be entitled to the new book which will be used about April 1 for meat rationing. Sometime during those eight days, also, OPA will announce what the point values of different cans will be worth during March (values may change from month to month). OPA CHIEF REPORTS SOUTHLAND READY “We are ready to go on point rationing in Southern California.” Samuel Leask Jr., Southland director of the OPA, made this declaration yesterday when notified officially from Washington that coupon rationing of canned dried and frozen fruits and vegetables will begin March 1. “We have volunteers who will assist rationing boards, the housewives and dthe merchants,” Leask said, “and more are being trained. “The public schools are prepared again to handle the huge registration for War Ration Book No. 2.” ABLES tioned At r Time COMPLETELY STOCKED WITH CHOICE SELECTIONS THE MOST DELICIOUS FRUITS AND VEGETABLES BLE TIME.
