Junior Ebell Committees Complete Interesting Plans For Annual Husbands' Night Hospitality
Junior Ebell husbands and sweethearts are to be paid special guest honors next Tuesday evening when they are dined and entertained at that major event of the club calendar, the annual Husband's Night.
Miss Katherine McCullah, Junior Ebell president, will head the receiving line made up of her officers, Mrs. William Cook, Mrs. Warren Schutz, Mrs. Lawrence Tetrault, Miss Evelyn Thompson, Mesdames James Reinert, Robert Harvey, Eldon Paddock and Miss Marjorie Edwards.
When members and honor guests seek places at the tables for the 7 o'clock dinner menu, the flower effect to greet their eyes will be that planned by Miss Betty Brandt and her decorating committee, Mesdames Richard Clowes, Harold Ferguson, Kenneth Snyder and Miss Laura Gene Frantz.
A tempting menu is being planned by Mrs. Schutz and her committee, Mesdames William Cook, Royal Marten, Robert Beaver and Eldon Paddock. Men who are anticipating the social event, will like to know that the dessert course ending the dinner will include luscious home-made cakes, which have been promised by various members.
These Junior Ebell pastry experts include with the president herself, Miss McCullah, Mesdames William Cook, James Reinert, Shirley L. Keith, Floyd Stockwell, Merle West, Robert Harvey and Lawrence Tetrault.
Mrs. Cook, who combines the duties of program chairman with those of first vice-president, has arranged for what is promised as a fascinating entertainment fea-
widely known for her pithy comments on life in the White House, will be presented as guest speaker for the after-dinner program.
Miss Merle Garrett Weds J. A. Silva At Quiet Yuma Rites
Mr. and Mrs. Leslie S. Garrett, 910 West Center street, have sent out formal announcements of the recent marriage of their daughter, Miss Merle Garrett, and Joseph A. Silva of Pasadena.
The wedding was an event of quiet simplicity which took place on Saturday, January 2 in Yuma, Ariz. The young people have already established a home in Pasadena where Mr. Silva's parents reside, and where they are near their work with Douglas Aircraft corporation.
For both bridegroom and bride are employed with Douglas and their romance is an outgrowth of their association there as members of the "Swing shift." The new Mrs. Silva is a graduate of Anaheim union high school, and Mr. Silva, who is awaiting his call to military service, had his education in Pasadena schools.

Has your doctor gone to war? Even if he hasn't so many others of the community have that his work is more than doubled. The so-called victims of common colds and minor ailments will have to resort to home remedies.
But better still is keeping in such good physical trim that there will be no need for medical care. A balanced diet, plenty of sleep, fruit juices, at least six glasses of water daily, and exercise make an almost fool-proof health plan.
Here are a few setting-up exercise guaranteed to keep any girl or woman in the pink of condition. And don't forget that they'll slim down those waist and hip-line bulges too.
If your heart's all right, begin by skipping rope, 30 skips a day to start, and working up to 100. Break this exercise up by alternating the right and left foot for half the number of skips, then finish off by skipping with both feet at a time.
The bicycle exercise, of course, is the old stand-by. It is excellent for all-round slimming down. Lie in the floor, raise your legs up above you head, supporting your back with your hands, and peddle the air as you would when cycling. Fifty times a day is not too much.
The "crew stretch" is also effective. Sit on floor with legs stretched out flat on the floor, feet together. Now reach over and touch your fingers to your toes and return to original position. Ten times is enough.

Nation’s Women Will Have Major Part In War Requirements
From the U. S. Treasury department, has come the statement that women's part in the World war will become vastly more important during 1943.
“Women will have the responsibility of budgeting their household expenses more carefully and saving more out of earned income in order to pay increased taxes and also for purchasing War Bonds — and more War Bonds. It takes both for Victory.
“Women have been called upon to give both services and talents during the first year of the war, but the year ahead will require even more to accomplish the task to be done. The job is not incidental and women are not called upon merely to make them feel that they are 'doing something.'"
“They will replace men in industries. They will be called to PICK UPS AND THROWS - - -

Newlyweds Return After Short Laguna Honeymoon
Having honeymooned in the interesting atmosphere of "Our Village," Mr. and Mrs. Earl Elson Flanders have now returned from Laguna Beach and are receiving friends in the home they have established at 460 West Eighth street Santa Ana.
Mrs. Flanders was the former Miss Lucille Eltiste, daughter of the August D. Eltistes of Cerritos road. Her mid-January marriage to Earl Elson Flanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Flanders of Orange, took place in Capilla de San Antonio at an altar banked with greenery starred with white cyclamen and gladiolus blossoms. The Rev. Lorenz E. Eifert, pastor of the Zion Lutheran church, officiated.
The bride, given in marriage by her father, chose a street-length costume in heavy white crepe worn with navy blue accessories and an orchid corsage. Her cousin, Miss Mildred Schmitgen, was honor maid and wore soldier blue with navy accents, and spray orchids. Vern Flanders assisted his brother as best man.
Parents of the young couple joined the bridal party in a receiving line for the friendly interval of congratulations and good wishes. After the new Mr. and Mrs. Flanders cut their towering wedding cake, refreshments were served the guests with Mrs. L. J. Davis presiding at the tea urn.
The bride, a graduate of union high school, also graduated from Fullerton junior college as did Mr. Flanders. He is with Lockheed Anaheim Gazette,
Campaign Opens For Infantile Paralysis Funds
(Continued from page 1) those who had early diagnosis, the celebrated Kenny treatment and physiotherapy are recovering in way that was believed impossible only a few years ago.
Many who were stricken tha past year are already walking without braces and are being habilitated through work of Mrs. Helen Paull, physiotherapist employed by the Orange county cha-ter. Every individual in the coun-ty is being asked to give such a as they find possible, in making this year's campaign a success.
Several birthday balls are scheduled for Saturday night; are open to the public and will held in the Balboa Rendezvous with Kiwanis club sponsors; in the Seal Beach Women's clubhouses and in Yorba Linda where the State Firemen and auxiliary wives be hosts.
Each city and community are planning for the drive under active chairmen and committees.

STANDARD OF LIVING
Reciprocal trade relations with other countries is drawing the spotlight. In short it means that this country could still sell those articles we have to other countries which lack them, and those nations in turn could sell to us the things we do not have.
That's fair. But the meat in the cocoanut is that we must not let other countries ship articles for sale here, that we produce. That would be ruinous to us because many foreign countries produce their articles with cheap labor, perhaps slave labor. That must not be allowed. Of course cheap politics must not be permitted to creep into the picture. Sometimes these political side issues spoil the gravy and made it wishy-washy.
NECESSARY STEPS
If the national representatives work for the best interests of the people, true democracy will rule. Strikes should be stopped. The big financial concerns should not be allowed to farm holding companies.
PEOPLE MUST RULE
All those conquered countries in Europe which have been taken by brute force should be returned to their people. Those innocent people must be protected.
THE DOGS DO BARK
One woman, followed by a little dog, met another women who said "Why don't you carry that poor little dog?" Replied the other, "Why should I? The dog has more legs than I have!"
CHASING ELUSIVE DOLLAR
Back in the 80's when the Santa Fe built its road west from Kansas City to Los Angeles, coming through Anaheim and on to San Diego, it started a land boom that affected all Southern California.
Flanders. He is with Lockheed Aircraft corporation.
do more volunteer work for home defense, and most important of all they will be expected to assist in financing the all-out effort. Housewives of America will be expected to economize even more, in order to help pay increased taxes and continue the purchase of War Bonds.
"Millions of women are today working in factories, on farms, in war industries and offices, and will join the ranks of federal income taxpayers for the first time.
"The nation's men are fighting on the far-flung battle fronts of the world. Fighting for our democracy and to keep actual war from the shores of our America. Women, in true spirit of comradeship, must do their part. It takes both—men and women, taxes and War Bonds, to bring Victory."

MOTORISTS BEWARE!
It is reported that degenerates and desperados are using red flashlights at night to halt drivers on the highways. The reason no doubt is for robbery and worse. This should be stopped — and no fooling.
SERIOUS SITUATION
The disease that destroyed all the grapevines and vineyards in Anaheim in the early 80's has again made its appearance in other parts of the state.
In the space of two years there was not a grapevine left in this section. Experts came from Washington to investigate and were perplexed. They did not know whether the disease attacked from the air or from the vine roots. It now appears that the disease is transmitted to the leaves and vines through various sources of infection.
Destruction of the vineyards here was a great financial loss to the pioneers, but they weathered the storm just as they did the collapse of the land boom.

Play safe KITE FLYERS
This year, more than ever before, it is important that you do not fly your kites near electric power lines...not only for your own safety, but also to avoid possible damage to power lines supplying electricity to vital war factories. Here are the complete safety rules for flying kites:
1. Fly your kite in an open field, away from power lines.
2. Never use wire, tinsel or metallic string.
3. Be sure the cord is perfectly dry.
4. If your kite catches in a power line, let go. Don't pull! Phone the company owning the line and a lineman will come to get your kite for you.

An Important Message to the Women of Anaheim—
The President of the United States has requested that the use of the name "Red Cross" be discontinued with any Commercial Product. The Red Cross Shoe, as you know, has borne this name for over 50 years. However, the makers of this famous Footwear, and we who sell Red Cross Shoes, are acceding during this critical war period to the wishes of our President. Therefore, Red Cross Shoes will now be known as GOLD CROSS SHOES. They will be labeled and marked as quickly as possible. GOLD CROSS SHOES are made by the same people who have made Red Cross Shoes. They are made in the same factories, over the same "Limit" lasts. Actually GOLD CROSS SHOES are RED CROSS SHOES.
