Army Officials Complete Jap Evacuation With the past week's evacuation of the final group of Japanese from Santa Anita and Fresno assembly centers, the U. S. Army has completed a project without parallel in national history, by moving 110,599 persons of alien ancestry from strategic military areas of the west coast, to inland points. These operations, covering a period of only eight months, have been summer up by the Army with the statement that "Never before has transference to relocation centers been effected without incident, on time, and with proper regard for the comfort of the person moved." The order of exclusion from strategic military areas was issued by Lieut. Gen. J. L. DeWitt, and affected all Japanese, whether born in this country or in Japan. All are now relocated in 10 big centers, where they maintain their own quarters, recreation centers, hospitals and governing councils. Housing, food and medical attention are provided by the government. Those who work are paid accordingly. Professional services receive $19 a month; skilled labor, $16, and unskilled, $12. Eight thousand Japanese are now engaged in agricultural labor outside relocation camps but are not permitted in military zones.
