Anaheim Buyer of War Bonds Receives Window Sticker and Lapel Pin From National Director, War Savings Plan
That small pin and the accompanying window sticker, both denoting membership in the Government’s 10 per cent payroll deduction plan, are prized possessions of every person in the city who is entitled to wear and display them.
But probably no one feels a deeper and more justifiable pride, than does William W. Joseph of 308 Kroeger street. And if William Joseph feels pride in his pin and his window placard, it is nothing to the deep personal pride that Anaheim has in William Joseph.
Joseph is not a high salaried executive. He is not even a "white collar man." He is a modest and unassuming worker—even as you and I. Somewhere sailing the Seven Seas, is his boy, Robert F. Joseph, a member of the U. S. Navy Reserve. Anyone who offers a son to his country, gives a gift beyond price. But William Joseph goes yet further.
Every pay day, he sets aside a portion of his salary for the purchase of U. S. War Bonds. But the 10 per cent salary deduction suggested by the government is disregarded by him. Twenty-five
Councilmen Will Attend State League of Cities
While this week's meeting of Anaheim city council was distinguished by very little important business, no doubt it fairly teemed with activity in comparison with next week's adjourned meeting which has been called for Monday morning at 9 o'clock in council chambers of the city hall.
For Mayor Charles A. Pearson plans to condense all business matters to the minimum in order to allow as many members as possible, time to attend the sessions of the League of California Cities, opening Monday in Los Angeles.
The council ratified the ap-
Kidhood Rejoices At News of Hallowe’en Plans
"Hi Butch! Hey Skinnay! We’re going to have the Hallowe’en party after all!" This was the exciting news among the lads of the city, and their young sisters were just as thrilled over it as the boys. Because with the war situation, dimout rules and all, the kids were just about ready to accept the dismal announcement that they would have to give up their annual celebration of Hallowe’en.
But at Tuesday morning's meeting of the Hallowe’en committee of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce, decision was reached to celebrate the October date with an early morning breakfast, and a gala afternoon parade for children of grammar school age in Anaheim and adjacent rural areas.
H. E. W. Barnes is committee chairman, and working with him on plans will be J Ben Kaulbars, parade chairman, assisted by J. W. Price, Ralph McBeth, chairman of the riders' division; Herbert L. Eldred, Everett Cone, Dr. John Boege and E. R. McCoy.
County Posts Open For Fire Fighters In Forest Division
Pointing out that Orange county is in need of eligible lists for various posts in the county's firefighting personnel, Don P. Cram, acting manager of the U.S. Employment Service headquarters office, 501 West Fifth street, Santa Ana, today announced examinations for the posts.
These examinations are to be held Saturday, September 19 at the State Division of Forestry ranger station in Orange, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 o'clock noon. Applications may be obtained at the ranger station that day and must be filed on the same date.
The posts in question include forest firefighter, assistant fire truck driver, forest fire truck driver, fire crew cook, and forest are fighting foreman, posts open to both men and women.
At the same time Manager Cram announced an examination for the position of clinical laboratory technician, to be held by the business, no doubt it fairly teemed with activity in comparison with next week's adjourned meeting which has been called for Monday morning at 9 o'clock in council chambers of the city hall.
For Mayor Charles A. Pearson plans to condense all business matters to the minimum in order to allow as many members as possible, time to attend the sessions of the League of California Cities, opening Monday in Los Angeles.
The council ratified the appointment of City Attorney Leo J. Friis as alien permit officer for the local Civilian Defense council. The appointment was made by James C. Sheppard, director of OCD, 9th civilian defense region. It empowers Friis to pass on curfew laws or any alien permits of this area.
Programs for the War conference of the League of Cities, the 44th annual conclave, were discussed. Virtually all council members plan to attend some or all of the sessions which will be held in the Hotel Biltmore from Monday to Thursday inclusive.
Programs promise unusual interest, and each day will feature some speaker of renown.. The defense program will be given utmost importance on the program, while problems common to all municipalities will be discussed. Patrick J. Maher, president of the League and who is Santa Barbara's mayor, will preside, Orange County League will be represented officially by D. W. Kelsey, a member of Santa Ana city council.
Monday night will feature the annual banquet to be held in Biltmore Bowl, with Robert Gordon Sproul, president of University of California as guest speaker. Other speakers of note during the week will include Governor Culbert Olson, Major Victor Hansen of the Western Defense Command; James M. Landis, national OCD director, and Attorney General Earl Warren.

Blame Is Placed On Car Driver For Death Crash
Bringing in a verdict of negligence upon the part of the driver, a cornorer's, jury on Tuesday placed upon Clarence Bemisdeafer, 29, of Hawthorne, full responsibility for the tragic accident of last Saturday morning, in which three lives were snuffed out and five persons were seriously injured.
The accident occurred in the early hours of the morning when the light sedan with Bemisdeafer at the wheel, crashed into an eastbound Southern Pacific freight train at Palm and Santa Ana streets. Occupants of the car were Glendale defense workers en route to shipyard jobs. Clarence Morgan Jackson was killed outright, and two others, Mrs. Weldon Wise and William Perry, died in the operating room at Anaheim Lutheran hospital. Suffering serious injuries were Barbara Davis, Adrienne Rogers, Grace Roth, David Hulett and the driver, Clarence Bemisdeafer, who is still unconscious and in a critical condition. He has been at Anaheim Lutheran hospital, but will be moved to White Memorial hospital, Los Angeles, if his condition shows any improvement.
Members of the train crew, Engineer Braughton, Conductor Frank Smith, Frank Shattuck and Allen Simms, brakeman, were absolved from blame. The train was traveling at the speed of five miles an hour. The coroner's jury met in the Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars morutary.
The crash was the most spectacular to have occurred in Anaheim or Orange county for a number of years.
Former Selective Service Clerk Is Home On Visit
Although Robert E. Winchell is making the most of the first vacation he has taken since National Selective Service started in October, 1940, he expressed the wish today that it might have come through some other means than by illness.
Winchell, who is stationed at the Sacramento headquarters of the state selective service board, arrived here in his home city after a week spent in Mercy hospital, Sacramento, suffering from an attack of influenza. Mrs. Winchell went to Sacramento to join her husband, and they returned together to the family home at 513 South Illinois street.
Before being transferred to state headquarters last March Winchell was clerk of the Anaheim Selective Service board, a post now filled by Glen Peck. His duties in the state organization at first took him to all sections of the state, since he was, as he expresses it, "the trouble shooter." In August he was transferred to the occupational deferment department where he will return when his health permits.
THEY BUY BONDS
Another increase in the number of city employees signing up for the 10 per cent payroll deduction plan, has boosted the percentage to 50, according to City Clerk Charles E. Griffith. It is believed that they will reach 80 per cent by October. Bond purchase by the staff averages $1000 monthly.

Southern County Bank To Observe 30th Anniversary
An event of unusual interest in Southland banking circles will be the observance on Sunday, September 20 of the 30th anniversary of the founding of Southern County bank of Anaheim.
It was on September 20, 1912 that the financial institution was founded, and in the intervening years it has enjoyed a steady and consistent growth to the place it now occupies as one of the outstanding financial influences of the entire community. It is one of the Southland's leading independent banks, and on June 30, its total resources were listed at the sum of $2,876,559.
Illustrating its steady growth is the fact that the bank now has three strong branches in addition to the parent establishment in this city. The first of these was opened in El Monte in 1913, just a year after the founding here.
In 1917 a second branch was opened in Buena Park, and the third branch was established in 1927 in Cypress, although it was transferred in 1934 to Artesia.
The president, J. W. Phelps, is an outstanding figure in Southland banking circles. He has

Police Chief J. S. Bouldin has a letter this week from Paul B.
D'Orr of Los Angeles headquarters, California OPA, pointing out the gravity of the rubber situation, and asking local cooperation in observing the new speed limit of 35 miles an hour as a means to conserving rubber. Chief Bouldin has pledged his department's aid in curbing fast driving, and all traffic officers are on the look-out for any infractions of the orders Names and addresses of anyone exceeding the speed limit will be recorded. Chief Bouldin pointed out that excessive speed of motorists in the United States is destroying rubber enough daily to recap 200,000 automobil tires.

County War Bond Quota For Month Set At $816,000
Anaheim residents were beginning to count their change pretty thoughtfully today, planning how much to set aside to aid in meeting Orange county's quota of $816,400 set for the September War Bond sales. Announcement of the sum set for the county was made this week by Harry L. Hanson of Santa Ana, county chairman of the War Bond campaign.
At the same time, Hanson declared that August sales of bonds throughout the United States fell nearly two million dollars short of the quota set by the U.S. Treasury department. Such sales aggregated $697,255,000 but the quota set was $815,000,000 for the nation.
However results of the 10 per cent payroll deduction plan were more encouraging, for exactly one million more patriotic Americans took advantage of the plan in August than the 19 million who participated in July. August sales made by this means of setting aside money each payday reached the sum of $225,000,000, a sum 25 millions in excess of that set aside in July.
PICNIC ANNOUNCED
Members of Los Angeles chapter, Retired Railroad Employees of American have issued invitation to all retired railroad men in the Anaheim area, to bring their families and take part in a big annual get-to-gether which they are staging next Thursday, September 24, in Sycamore Grove park, Los Angeles. Each family is to provide its own basket dinner for the noon-day picnic.

Although Captain and Mr. Charles Schmitt, just returned from California from North Carolina are happy to renew the major Anaheim friendships formed when Capt. Schmitt was commanded at St. Catherine's Military academy, both are conscious of a small but very irritating "fly in my ointment" of their satisfaction.
When the genial captain was transferred from his first military base at Camp Callan to Camp Davis in N. Car., he was in New York for promotion to the rank of major. History repeated itself at Camp Davis, and promotions papers were almost complete when again he was transferred this time to Camp Haan, River side. All of his friends are now hopeful that Uncle Sam will permit him to remain at Camp Haan long enough to gain his well earned promotion.
Mrs. Schmitt and her little children will remain Anaheim "for the duration," as are already located at 1029 West Center street. Capt. Schmitt will report for duty in the very near future.
Controller Riley Gives Figures On States Finances
State Controller Harry B. Riley announced this week from San Pedro, that California be given fund cash excess in her history, the sum of $42,288,481. This is approximately $12,000,000 beyond the greatest surplus ever recorded in the state.
According to Controller Riley California is better off by $76,347,172 than in September, 1941, while instead of an excess, she faced a deficit amounting to $069,691.
Dr. Wilson Sends Message From Samoan Island Station
Second best only to an annual meeting, was the personal message which this week reached Mrs. Llewellyn E. Wilson and her daughter Peggy, 558 South Illinois street, from their husband and father, Lieut. Llewellyn E. Wilson of the Medical Corps, U. S. Navy Reserves and U. S. Marine Corps, now stationed on the little island of Upolu, in British Samoa.
Lieut Wilson who practised in this city, and was well known throughout Orange county and the Southland, especially through his successful term as resident physician at Orange County General hospital, enlisted in the Navy Reserves and left the San Diego base in July for his station in the Samoan Islands. An interesting side-light on his Medical Corps service is the fact that it also embraces the Marine Corps, hence he wears the U. S. Navy insignia with the uniform of the U. S. Marines. The rule applies to all physicians and surgeons and to all nurses enlisting for Naval service.
The personal message was relayed to Mrs. Wilson and her daughter this week, by an officer in the Matson liner Lurline, formerly in the mainland to Hawaii service, and now doing Selectees Depart For Army Service At Fort McArthur
On Tuesday morning there departed from this city more than half a hundred young men, all of them accepted for service in the United States Army, and starting on the first steps of their trip to Fort McArthur.
The men, 53 in number, were those accepted from a possible 99 youths numbered in the first September group of the Selective Service board, according to Glen A. Peck, clerk of the board. There were 27 youths rejected by the Army medical board; three transferred to other boards; half a

On a recent trip, the Lurline officer met and talked with Lieut. Wilson, and was able to relay his cheerful message to his wife and daughter. The message itself, showed the excellent morale of the Anaheim physician, and of the men stationed at the South Pacific Island outpost. It amplified the information that Mrs. Wilson has received in letters that have reached her regularly from the island base.

Foggy Mornings Are Welcome To Walnut Growers
Heavy morning fogs of the current week have been welcomed by Orange county's walnut growers. For such weather conditions make walnuts literally "leap from their hulls," according to Agricultural Commissioner Dixson W. Tubbs.
Harvest season will be in full swing within the next fortnight, and the 4500 acres of walnuts in this county are expected to yield approximately 1800 pounds of nuts to the acre. For the past several years, the yield has not exceeded 1200 pounds per acre, so growers are anticipating a good year.
The only thing to mar the general satisfaction, is the shortage of labor. That the closing of the citrus harvest season may divert a certain amount of labor to the walnut groves, is a possibility. In line with the approaching walnut harvest, growers have been advised of proposals regarding half a hundred young men, all of them accepted for service in the United States Army, and starting on the first steps of their trip to Fort McArthur.
The men, 53 in number, were those accepted from a possible 99 youths numbered in the first September group of the Selective Service board, according to Glen A. Peck, clerk of the board. There were 27 youths rejected by the Army medical board; three transferred to other boards; half a dozen who failed to report, and ten who enlisted for service in various divisions.
Those enlisting were Ethan Roy Craig and Mack Tate, U. S. Army; Joe Edd Howard, U. S. Marines; Sylvan Lyle Vilott, Army Air Corps; Cloye Clement Gault and Nyle Clinton Pawling, U. S. Navy; Walter Francis Reed, John Tom Tucker, Leon Hyacinth Staniszewski and William Murl Dalton, U. S. Coast Guard.
When the selectees left from the local bus station it was under the acting corporalship of Clarence Bargsten and Eugene D. Brady, appointed by Army officials at the Los Angeles induction station.
The men included also Freeland Woodrow Smith, Henry John Plomb, Joe Cruz Rivera, Ralph Wade Fanning, Samuel Arnold, Enrique Baladad Tango, Julian Sterling Minish, Edward Taylor Rippy, Charles Michael Post, George Douglas Allen, Roy Earl Siples, Darroll D. Webb, Guido Peter Primo, Eulogio Piza, Ralph Galindo, Aubrey Reed Matthews, Arnold G. Villalobos, Arlie Harris, Santiago V. Ramirez, Cleo C. Smith, Mike G. Mendoza, Eugene D. Anaheim Air Port Manager Given Lieut. Commission
Of interest to a host of Anaheim friends, was announcement made this week, that Samuel J. Coughran, former manager of Anaheim Air Port, had been granted his commission as first lieutenant in the U. S. Bomber Ferry Command.
Lieut. Coughran enlisted in late December as a civilian pilot in the Ferry command, and is stationed at the base in Long Beach. He pilots the huge Army bombers all over the United States, spending far more time in the air than he does at his base, or in Buena Park, where Mrs. Coughran makes her home while her husband is in active service.
