Advice Given On Winter Cover Crop “This is the time to get ready for the winter cover crop,” today pointed out Orange County Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg who further explained that such cover crops provide a cheap source of organic matter and in comparison with other materials, are relatively cheaper this year than for several years past. The reason for this is two-fold, declares Wahlberg. First is the increased price of fertilizers and manure, and second is the lower cost of many of the cover crop seeds. Organic manures are priced 50 per cent higher than last year and commercial fertilizers too have taken a sharp upward trend. Cover crops can be planted and produced at a lower cost for seed, with perhaps a slight increase in hired labor involved. The rate of seeding per acre varies with the size of the seed, according to Wahlberg. Some cover crops, including mustard, malva, melilotus, etc., range from 10 to 20 pounds per acre, while others, like wedge and Canadian field peas, cereals and purple vetch, range from 45 to 60 pounds per acre. A detailed treatise on cover crops for Orange county conditions have been prepared by the farm advisor, and ranchers and growers wishing copies, may obtain them by calling at the office. Flame Proofing of Clothing Described In New Circular Anaheim homemakers interesting in flame proofing their clothing are urged to obtain a copy of the circular, “Fight Fires with Forethought,” published by the Agricultural Extension service of University of California. In the circular is described a method of making clothing flame resistant by the use of ammonium sulfamate. The use of this chemical compound has been demonstrated by Miss Frances L. Liles, home demonstration agent in Orange county. She emphasized that the clothing of emergency farm fire fighter companies, organized in the 31 defense areas of the county, should be so treated. Rural fire fighters do not require new clothing to be safely uniformed for this emergency. Rather, old garments may be chemically treated at home to make them fully protective. This circular giving full instructions is available free in the Agricultural Extension Service office, 220 Ramona Building, Santa Ana. Although in those states east of the Mississippi river, tomatoes have been a “food for victory special” only two times, in Southern California, they have been and should continue to be an important special throughout the season. Aside from being pleasing in appearance and refreshing in taste, the tomato has another advantage of being an easy vegetable to can. It is nutritious too, and well known as a valuable source of Vitamin C and it gets honorable mention for its Vitamin A and some B1. Because it is easy to can and to combine with other foods, homemakers should plan to can a plentiful supply. Home, to the American people, is a symbol of peace and freedom. Whenever you travel to near or distant parts, there is a feeling of security in knowing that you can return to a home with its comforts and conveniences, its peaceful family life. How would you like to be welcomed home by the crashing of bombs, by pillars of smoke arising from the ruin of possessions for which you had worked and saved? That is no fantastic dream. Anything can happen. That is why thousands of Union Pacific employees, resolved to retain their American freedom, are tirelessly working to help Uncle Sam. Troop trains—huge shipments of raw materials and armament—roll over "the Strategic Middle Route" in a never-ending procession. It's up to all of us to "keep 'em rolling." We must be victors—not victims. R. A.
