When You Go
To Your Work!
FORM A CAR CLUB FOR ECONOMY
Save your car all you can—make it last. It may be a long time before you can get another. When you go to work, go as many as possible in one car. Empty seats mean that someone else is wasting rubber—wasting equipment—wasting gas and oil.
Form a Victory Car Club with your friends and neighbors—take turns driving and get extra YEARS out of your cars and your tires. Let's all get the habit of going to work with our car seats filled! If you can't form a car club, use the buses and street cars. Don't drive with empty seats!
Needless mileage and empty seats are two kinds of waste that must not be reduced.
Tennis Tournament
Meets With NorthParticulars on the tennis tournament to be held next Tuesday, August 18, at the city park were released this morning by Jeanne Heying, recreation director.
Already over 20 tennis players from Anaheim, Buena Park and Fullerton have indicated their intention to play in the tournament open to all boys and girls under 7 years of age. Prizes, donated by the Wisser sporting goods store and SQR store, will be awarded. Games will begin at 9 a.m. and playoffs will be in the evening.
Aiding Miss Heying with details of the tournament are Joy Anne Hayes, ace junior college player, C. R. Brandon, local tennis enthusiast, and Gerald Boegel well-known "raqueteer" of Fullerton. Players are asked to bring their own rackets while balls will be furnished.
Rural Fire Cos.
Train in County
Reports from this community indicate that the rural fire companies organized this past spring by the State Division of Forestry and the Agricultural Extension service, are going ahead in the training program, according to W. M. Cory, Assistant Farm adviser.
While new equipment has been scarce and difficult to obtain, several of the companies have secured old spray rigs and repair them. Others have taken old cars and remodeled them into small serviceable fire trucks with pump and 150 to 200 gallon tank capacities.

Needless mileage and empty seats are two kinds of waste that must not be measured in dollars. They reduce America's reserve supply of transportation at a time when every unused mile in EVERY vehicle, and in every gas tank in America is of vital importance. Be a "soldier" and co-operate.

Going Somewhere?
WE'RE IN A WAR; a fact that is being brought home to us in many ways. No longer can we enjoy all the privileges to which we have become accustomed. Johnny can't use the car. Mother can't bake so many cakes.
Place the blame squarely where it belongs—in Berlin. The shadow that has darkened so much of the world could lengthen still farther; could bar our freedom of speech, press and worship; yes, and our right to travel when and where we choose.
What are we doing about it? Ask any Union Pacific man. He and thousands of other American railroad workers are exerting every effort to stop that creeping shadow; transporting armament and munitions as fast as our factories can turn them out... transporting troops in ever-increasing numbers. It's a job that must be done so we Americans may always be free to go wherever we please, unquestioned and without fear.

Report of Plane Crash Is Mistake
A request late last week from the Army to Anaheim police department to check a reported plane crash three and a half miles northwest of the city, proved to be a false alarm. Investigating officers found no trace of wreckage and later were informed by the Army that the supposed crash was merely sunlight flashing on a plane high in the air.
State Controller Visits Home County
Memories of his boyhood days were recalled this week by State Controller Harry B. Riley, when he was guest speaker at Fullerton Rotary club. A native of Orange county, Riley was born and spent his boyhood on a ranch adjacent to what is now the Knott Berry Place, La Habra. He was introduced as Rotary club speaker by his life-time friend and associate, Sam Collins.
