Fourth Division Kiwanians Stage Their Mid-Summer Picnic Outing Tuesday Eve Tuesday's meeting of Kiwanis club was merely a skeleton session in connection with noon luncheon in Anaheim Elk's club, since a majority of the members were planning to take part in Fourth Division picnic that evening in Irvine park. President Everett Cone and his Kiwanians had as Anaheim's share in picnic plans, the duty of taking reservations and handling tickets for approximately 250 Kiwanis members and their wives in attendance. Fourth division of the California-Nevada district comprises Anaheim, Whittier, La Habra, Fullerton, Buena Park, Santa Ana, Newport and San Clemente Kiwanis clubs. Lloyd Mitchell of Santa Ana, division lieutenant governor, had general supervision of outing plans. Fullerton club planned the super menu enjoyed beneath the great sycamore trees of the park, while Santa Ana club directed entertainment features. Each club in the division was asked to contribute an act to the program, and Anaheim responded by providing little Miss Virginia Harmon, accordionist. Virginia took second place in the city's gala Amateur Show last year, and met equal enthusiasm on the Kiwanis program. Another Amateur Show winning feature, "Shirley and her Cowboy Band," was presented by Buena Park Kiwanians. Other features included a La Habra boy accordionist who was accompanied by his father on Bob Burns' favorite instrument, the bazooka; a talented singing team of husband and wife from Newport Beach; a Santa Ana comedian and other clever acts. As finale to the evening, the crowd enjoyed dancing to recorded music in the park pavilion. Government Flag Presented MCP Highlight of the annual Mutual Citrus Products picnic at Irvine park Monday, attended by 425 employees and their families, was the presentation of a Government Treasury flag to H. T. Leo, MCP president, by a Government representative to recognize the fact that 91 per cent of all company employees are registered as "Ten Percent Club" members. They have pledged 10 percent of their incomes for the purchase of War Bonds and Stamps. The flag was presented at a dance in the evening, which topped off a full day of entertainment. In charge of the barbecue was Frank Moreno, foreman at the company. Several Spanish and Hula dances were given during the evening festivities. The Treasury flag is blue and white, centered with a soldier and encircled with white stars on a background of blue. The new flag now flies beside a service flag with 12 stars on the front of the MCP building, 424 South Atchison street. GEORGE P. HEMPHILL, 79, a native of Bell Center, Ohio, and a resident of Anaheim for the past 40 years, died Saturday at his home at 226 East Adele street. Surviving him in Anaheim is his wife, Julia. Private services were held Monday from Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars chapel. Recollections of Early Days Here Continued from Page 1 beautiful trees and flowers. It was sold in 1919 and Mr. Geerdes took up his residence on La Palma avenue, west of the city. GROWTH OF CITY One of the great pleasures of his life, Mr. Geerdes remarked, was in watching the city spring from dirt roads and vacant lots to a community of 12,000 citizens. He expects to watch Anaheim continue to grow, for quite a few years to come. "I'll be 81 next Sunday, but I'm still going good," he declared. During his proprietorship of the 10-acre ranch on Los Angeles street, Mr. Geerdes built four different houses. His present home occupies a lot 50 by 150 feet, on which grow 30 fruit trees. These provide him and his friends with fruits all year 'round. Burial was made in Fairhaven cemetery. MATTIE A. PENDLETON, 75, whose death occurred Friday in Anaheim Lutheran hospital after only a brief illness, had been a resident of this city for the past 13 years. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon by her pastor, Rev. Stanley Frederick George of the Presbyterian church, in the Hilgenfeld mortuary. Burial took place in Melrose Abbey mausoleum. KAREN SUE ORGAN, seven month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Ben Organ of South Walker road in Cypress, passed away yesterday afternoon at an Orange hospital after a brief illness. She is survived by her parents and two sisters, Barbara Joan and Mary Joyce. Funeral services will be tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Hilgenfeld mortuary. Burial will be made in the Anaheim cemetery. City League Meets At Fullerton Hall Anaheim was well represented by its officials last Thursday night when our neighboring city of Fullerton staged special dedication ceremonies in its new city hall. The ceremonies were in connection with a meeting of the Orange county unit of League of California Cities. Among local officials helping swell the crowd in attendance were Mayor Charles A. Pearson Councilmen Leo J. Sheridan and Ray Van Wagoner; Clerk Charles E. Griffith, Vard Hannum, superintendent of the light and power department; E. P. Hapgood, city engineer; G. Millard Parks, formerly of the engineering department; Charles H. Mann, executive chairman of Anaheim Defense council and George F. Holden, district attorney. George Gordon, president of the Orange County League, was presiding officer for the evening Mayor H. H. Kohlenberger and Chamber of Commerce Secretary William Montague, of the host city, headed the receiving committee. Guest speaker for the evening was James C. Sheppard director of the Ninth Civilian Defense region. Prominent among special guests were two Orange county supervisors, Willard Smith, fourth district, and N. E. West, fifth district and two well-known Fullerton pioneers, Mr. and Mrs: George Amerige. Employment Service Needs Colored Men Need of colored men for janite work and laboring jobs in the Consolidated Aircraft plant, San Diego, has been announced here by Roy Ferguson, local United States Employment Service manager at the Santa Ana office of the U.S. service, 501 West Fifth St. Colored men who can provide their birth certificates and are good physical condition may make applications at the Santa Ana office. Representatives of Douglas and Central Aircraft placement firm in Los Angeles interview "Nobody Comes To Collect My Junk" ... she said. This lady is puzzled. Even a little annoyed, perhaps. Like a good patriot, she has cleared the junk out of her attic and basement—the scrap metal, the old rubber, and old rags. She knows that America needs it. "Why doesn’t someone come and get it?" she asks. Collecting junk is a difficult problem. The method differs in almost every community. The junkman is busier than ever and can’t call on everyone. But a determined woman is never licked. No sir! She’ll inquire among her neighbors. Maybe she will get in touch with her State salvage committee. She’ll find out if there is a local salvage committee and if there isn’t she’ll help get one started. She will find out what local charity is able to collect scrap. If the junkman can’t come around she’ll find a way to deliver junk to him instead. She’ll find out what the county agent is doing if she lives on a farm. Shucks! She’s licked a lot harder problems than this! This advertising space has been donated to the Bureau of Industrial Conservation WAR PRODUCTION BOARD Washington, D.C. by the ANAHEIM GAZETTE Two Hot Weather Dishes Promise A Good Response Spring Salad with Waffle Cheese sandwiches—hm-mh, what a response menfolk will give to these after a hot day working on the job, whether it be in the defense factory, on the farm or in the office. Here are both recipes: SPRING SALAD Mash 2½ ounces of Roquefort type cheese with a fork, add one cup of thick sour cream and mix well. Season with salt. Cut a small head of chicory in pieces, shred one small head of lettuce, slice a bunch of radishes and one or two green onions in a salad bowl. Add the sour cream dressing and toss together. It makes six servings. WAFFLE SANDWICHES Waffle cheese sandwiches are a perfect complement to the salad. For six, mash one-fourth pound of American cheese with a fork until soft. Remove crusts from three day old bread and cut in thin slices. Spread half of the slices with a thin layer of cheese and half with soft butter. Put together and cut in half. Spread soft butter on the outside and brown in a hot waffle iron. Be certain, however, not to press the top of the iron down tightly. When brown, serve while still warm. The earliest explorer known to have navigated the Potomac River to within 25 miles of Washington was Spanish Admiral Pedro Menendez (1571).—Pathfinder. Want a 'Possum or Maybe a Turtle? Did you happen to be born far enough south of the Mascot and Dixon line that you acquired a love for "possum sweet p'taters"? If so, appeal William T. Wallop, genial superintendent of Anaheim Union Water company. He has 'possum he'll be glad to give someone. At least he has been heard offering it to anyone who would remove it from his home up in the Placentia hills, where he captured the creature on his ranch. Or maybe your taste runs the turtle soup of Maryland East Shore area. Then Mr. H. L. Stanton, 500 South Old street, might help you. At least she reported to the city police department, that a large turkey has made himself very much home with her, and that she was keeping him for his owner. If that owner doesn't show up well then that is another story. Incidentally while we're there subject of animals, it seems that Dobbin has eased automobiles off the police blotter well as the highway. At least J. P. Duval, 1301 West North Street, appealed to the police for aid in tracing a horse that disappeared from his premises Has anybody seen him?
