BUY UNITED STATES DEFENSE BONDS AND STAMPS Inside Plan Importing of Mexican Laborers Possibility of importing Mexican farm laborers into this community and all over the state to meet a labor shortage caused by the war conditions is being considered today by officials of the Departments of State, Labor and Agriculture in Washington, D.C. The plan was recommended by the United States Employment service, who reported this week that during the first week in June, California farmers had a shortage of 21,000 workers. It is reported that during a normal year about 125,000 workers are needed each summer month and that this year, production will be increased by 15%, making the number of workers needed that much greater. CURRENT WAGE It was recommended that 40,000 Mexicans be imported and that they be paid the current wage for the crop area in which they work under conditions offered those now engaged. Complete provisions for the return of such workers to Mexico after their period of work here were included in the plan. Life In Japanese Resettlement Camp Described In Letter From Evacuee Life in a resettlement camp for aliens in the United States can be contrasted today to that found in a concentration camp in an Axis or an Axis-dominated country by reading a letter received recently by Mr. and Mrs. J. Walls, Routt 3, Anaheim, from a former resident of this vicinity, who now living in a Japanese camp in Poston, Ariz. The writer of the letter is Kinu Shiotani, daughter of a vegetable and orange producer who owned 80 acres of land near Atwood. He was born in Honolulu and his children are graduates from Placentia high school. He supplied vegetables for local stores before having to evacuate. LETTER READS The letter from the camp reads: “This place is located about 30 miles from Parker, Ariz., and since they are still constructing, it is very dusty. Eventually we will have lawns and flowers but will probably dry up the Colorado River. The houses are built about 30 feet apart on a one mile square. There are four rooms to a barrack. Mother, Yo, and I occupy one apartment with a lady friend and daughter. We were furnished with cots, two woolen blankets hay mattress and buckets and washboard if we need them. The rest rooms are sanitary since everyone must have a part keeping them clean. There are about 250 persons in a block with a mess hall, manager's office, reception hall, laundry and rest room. All this may sound nice but still wish we were at home. LONG JOURNEY “The long journey here on train was a tiresome one. From Barstow to Parker there was no sign of life. The day after our arrival, the younger set applied for jobs. Most of the office jobs such as bookkeepers and typists must be experienced with college education. I am head of the formula mixing for our kitchen. It is an easy job. We work about two hours at each mealtime preparing milk for babies and children. Romance are around that four cents an hour will be our wage. They have a fire department, police department, ambulance and everything else here. A hospital will be completed soon.” “We have been living on cann vegetables and meats until today when we had cabbage, frogs grapefruit and oranges.” SHARP CONTRAST Those who have read “Escape from Hong Kong” found in July issues of the Saturday Evening Post will find a sharp contrast reports of living conditions... have a wide selection of kitchen stools, ladders, tables, — Gibson Refrigerators—and Gaffers & Sattler Stoves other necessary items to make your kitchen a complete unit Gibson Refrigerators WITH STRATA-ZONE FOOD CONDITIONING THE FREEZ'R SHELF REFRIGERATOR Strata-Zone food conditioning brings you full-width layers of different kinds of cold ... to keep all foods the way they should be kept.
