EMBLEM OF U. S.
The Star Spangled Banner was adopted as the emblem of the United States by Congress on the 14th of June, 1777. The Elks Lodge which was founded as a patriotic society, has adopted this as one of its festival days, and every lodge in the United States celebrates the day and pays fitting tribute to the flag. Anaheim lodge 1345 engaged the Fairyland theatre and rendered a program which was witnessed by hundreds of people. Judge Benjamin F. Bledsoe of Los Angeles was the principal speaker. His subject was "The Flag." Hans V. Weisel read an interesting history of the flag and its adoption. Mrs. Ray Fisher, accompanied by Miss Marie Rimpau, sang "America for Me" and "You Have to be an American to Feel That Way." She was handed a beautiful bouquet at the end of the first song. Edward Backs' first number was "The Story of Old Glory" and in response to the encore he sang "I Love You, California." Both singers were vociferously cheered. At the close of the program, the band played "America" and "The Star Spangled Banner."

RIVER INSPECTION
Wm. McFadden and E. R. Amerige representing the Anaheim Water company accompanied by Supervisor Armoir and Superintendent Gardner of the Santa Ana Valley Irrigation company, went on a tour of inspection up the river last Thursday to look into the diversion of water on the Jurupa ranch. They found a ditch running 600 inches of water on the ranch, upon which an injunction will be served, restraining the parties from the use of the water. The gentlemen went as far as Riverside and South Riverside and returned on Friday. Active measures will be taken to stop the diversion of water, and the fight will be carried on by the water companies on both sides of the river.

ANAHEIM FIRE
One of the hottest fires Anaheim has experienced for many years broke out after five o'clock on Friday evening. By some means the paint shop and barn of W. P. Webb, situated at the rear of his residence, caught fire. It originated outside the building. A large supply of paint was destroyed. The fire raged so fiercely that it was impossible to reach the horse which was stabled in the barn and it was burned to death. The loss was estimated to be $2500. There was no insurance.

The sales of the brewery are constantly on the increase and Conrad numbers his patrons throughout the whole of Southern California. The beer exported is now over a year old, and is pronounced by experts to be superior to any lager made in the state.
ANVILS BOOM
Kroeger's hall was filled with an enthusiastic audience Monday evening, and outside the booming of anvils under the direction of Big Bentz made the countryside wonder what was up in the old town. All our neighbors are invited to be present and partake of our hospitality.

SUGGESTIONS FOR PACKING BOX LUNCHES
1. Use wax paper for dry foods, paper containers with lids for salads, puddings and other cooked foods. It is safer not to use glass containers.
2. Include appetizing extras and relishes; and a generous supply of salt, as it helps prevent heat exhaustion.
3. Wash box and thermos in hot soap suds and then soda. Rinse well, dry and air before using again.
Santa Fe and your WINTER WHEAT
Once more the miracle of the winter wheat harvest is with us. Nature has been kind, in Santa Fe territory, and another bumper crop is indicated. Prices, too, are good.
That is a happy prospect, but it brings serious problems with it—both for you who raise the grain, and for us who move it.
You face a shortage of harvest labor, and a serious lack of storage space, at terminals and in rural bins, because of the unprecedented carry-over of old wheat. We face the job of moving a vast grain tonnage, in a short time, on top of the greatest railroad traffic load in history.
For example, in April, 1941, Santa Fe freight cars moved 108,131,891 miles. In April, 1942, that mileage had leaped to 142,823,878. A great part of that 32% jump represented war freight, that must move first.
Santa Fe pledges every possible help in moving 1942 wheat to points where it can be accepted and placed for use. Of you we ask prompt loading and unloading, and that no car be used for storage, even temporarily. Let’s pull together and whip this war-born transportation problem, as we have so many others in the long years we’ve worked together.
AT YOUR SERVICE—Talk over your transportation problems with your Santa Fe representative. He’ll be glad to help with practical suggestions.

Let Us All Work Together.
We have a job that can be done only if we all work together • As Daniel Webster once said, Liberty exists in Proportion to Wholesome Restraint ... and now we have an opportunity to prove the truth of this statement.
• We must plan our daily lives with economy of time, energy and expenditure.
• We must buy only the things we need — and select only those that best serve our need.
• It means learning all, we can about the value of merchandise — where to buy to best advantage—how to make things last as long as possible by good care.
