US War Production Board Does Away With Style Extremes In Women’s War Clothing No Noticeable Change in Men’s Clothes, Says OPA “Zoqt”, suits with “rect” pleats, as the song goes, will not really be the apparel of the male animal during the present war period, according the Consumer Division of the Office of Price Administration. Instead there will be no noticeable difference in the appearance of his clothes. He will continue to dress warmly and well although he will encounter changes in style and fabric and reductions in the range of selection to which he has been accustomed. HERE’S HOW This is how the average man will look when manufacturers begin to turn out wartime styles in quantity, probably by next fall. SUITS: OVERCOATS He will wear: Conservative-cut suits or softer fabric; overcoats of reused or reprocessed wool, mohair or other fleecy fabrics; worsted of a crossweave rayon or cotton; suits minus trouser cuffs, pleats, tucks and vests; summer cutfits of cotton gabardines and seersuckers. SHIRTS Dyed shirts will be lighter in color and fewer patterns from which to choose. Pleated fancy shirts will be a rarity but the popular styles will remain on the market. BY MARY ANN CALLEN No extremes in dress styles during World War II. That’s the ruling passed on to women today by the WP Production board following action early in April when it stated that present women’s wardrobes will not be made obsolete by radical fashion changes. Length and fullness of skirts are now stabilized but since most clothes for spring and summer are already made the restrictions will not become effective until fall and winter. It is estimated that at least 15 per cent more garments can be made out of the same yardage of cloth new that the board has recommended conservation and prevention measures. WOOLEN GARMENTS Restrictions on woolen garments became effective April 9; on cotton, rayon and other materials, June 19; and regulations on existing retailers' stocks of ensembles will go into effect August 17. The conservation measure consist mainly of eliminating such things as French cuffs or sleeves, balloon sleeves, patch pockets of wool and the prohibition of suit and coat ensembles of more than two pieces at one unit price. The prevention measures consist of fixing maximum coat and skirt lengths and sweep thus heading off possible extreme style changes to length on skirts and coats and the increase cloth requirements. MEASUREMENTS LIBERAL Measurements were purpose made liberal in order not to mode present wardrobes or stocks, which would have defended the purpose of the order—to serve cloth. The order does not mean standardization of work clothes. Nor does it mean the use of new fashions. Within the limitations fixed in the order, fast designers, dress manufactures and housewives are free to their ingenuity in creating ever fashions may strike a fancy. The lengths represent the current average. The sweeps, too based on the average between HIS CHECKED SUIT of "Hit Parade" songstress and wardrobes with the War Production Board on women's clothes, pocket measures 25 inches, the skirt is not more than inches around. Of gray white shadow wool, it tap pockets and huge buttons. Her little be-bre-pem-adour deap is matching material. Note the war Victory" gloves. Tags Not As Bad Women Thought Experts Say Giving that the WPB rulings as bad as women thought should be, fashion experts out of the country have been dig detailed reports on what not to wear during the final details of the board's as they effect the different in a woman's wardrobe. AL RESTRICTIONS Not more than two articles at one unit. No dress may be sold a jacket, bolero, cape or redingote at a unit. No French cuffs on eses. No double material. No balloon, dolman or mid-mutton sleeves. No fabrics which have reduced from normal or length by all-over shirring, pleating, exfor minor trimmings. No inside pockets of wool. No patch pockets of wool en a lined wool garment. No interlinings contain any virgin or reprocessed fleecy fabrics; worsted of a crossweave rayon or cotton; suits minus trouser cuffs, pleats, tucks and vests; summer cutoffs of cotton gabardines and seersuckers. SHIRTS Dyed shirts will be lighter in color and fewer patterns from which to choose. Pleated fancy shirts will be a rarity but the popular styles will remain on the market. SOCKS The average man'socks may be of cotton or rayon, instead of wool or silk and he will select them from a norrower range of colors and patterns. HATS His hat may be the fur felt worn before, but fur and wool felt mixtures probably will be more common. During the summer he may sport one of the up-and-coming straw substitutes, visca, cellophane or coltafal. SHOES His shoes will be conservative in style and will not show off the thick soles, expensive leathers and color varieties of peacetime. Wing lips, one-piece uppers, woven leather uppers and heavy brogues requiring double soles will probably not be made. Colors may be limited to black, Yankee brown, and light tan. Everyday shoes will look very much like current conservative styles, but heavy sports shoes will be rare and those using rubber or crepe soles nonexistent. As the law stands now, only claimed rubber may be used for rubber heels and the supply for this purpose has been cut in half. GLOVES The average man's gloves will be made of less leather, more fabric weaves, knitted rayon and cotton mixtures. IN GENERAL In general, these changes are coming because of the need for materials and looms to weave fabrics for the armed forces. Wool and leather stocks are curtailed further by the sharp drop in shipments from Australia and South America. BRIGHT RED WOOL jacket with black embroidered monogram-like motif over a slim sheer wool freck buttoned from neckline to beltline is worn here by pretty radio actress Frances Woodward of the "Big Town" dramas. The new WPB rulings now outlaw wool over wool, so girls will be assembling their own two and three piece ensembles. Her little black calot is trimmed with fluffy red and black pompoms and figured veiling.
