Kuchel Editors and Publishers The Anaheim Gazette has been owned and edited by the same family since 1875. Published every Thursday at 259 East Center Street, Anaheim, California. Wanted—a name for the United Nations’ world-wide battle. Is it the “War of Free Peoples,” the “Democratic Crusade” the “War Against Japanazism,” or, as a Washington taxi driver proposed, “The People’s War”? How about the “United War,” or the “Last War”? Whatever it be, at a recent press conference the President admitted the need of a clear, purposeful and commonly recognized name. A war which finds millions of people of many different races and nationalities fighting under a common banner, which finds nations with many different types of government allied against a common foe—such a war demands a name simple enough, and all inclusive enough, to have universal appeal. Whatever the differences and distinctions among them, the United Nations are fighting in defense of their right to exist as free, independent nations, to be the masters of their own houses, without living in perpetual fear of vandals and housebreakers. That’s what the war’s about. And its name? If you have any suggestions on that score, you might let the White House hear about them. The War Needs Men—Here Are Jobs An urgent call for 920 workmen, who on presenting proper qualifications will be hired at the The War Needs Men—Here Are Jobs An urgent call for 920 workmen, who on presenting proper qualifications will be hired at the Mare Island Navy yard, was announced today by the Santa Ana office of the US Employment service. Specifically the Navy yard needs: 10 blacksmiths, 10 boatbuilders; 25 boilermakers; 10 coppersmiths; 100 electricians; 100 machinists; 25 sheet metal workers; 25 shipfitters; 10 shipwrights; 50 electric welders; 50 pipefitters; 5 patternmakers; and 500 general helpers. Further information is not available at the Navy yard but at 501 West Fifth street, Santa Ana. YOUTH TRAINING Training pilots in colleges and universities since 1939, the Civilian Aeronautics administration announced today that they are joining forces in an all-out drive to "air condition" American youth by stimulating aviation education in elementary schools and high schools. By turning over to schools responsibility for teaching preliminary units in basic training, the move is intended to create in youth a thorough knowledge basic to a candidate for pilot training and to increase public interest in aviation. AUTOMOTIVE MEN Issued through the Citizens association of Orange County today on behalf of the Automotive Industry division was a call for 40 automotive craftsmen and kindred skilled men from the county for overseas duty in about three months. The volunteers, it was explained will be mustered into the 301 Ordinance regiment and will be part of a total of 1,200 West coast men between 18 and 45 to be recruited. Job assigned to the outfit will be repair of Army mechanical equipment in some overseas destination as yet undisclosed. Cruiting must be completed by May 1 and will be followed by two month's training in South Carolina. HIGHWAY PATROL The association's appeal followed formation earlier this week of a statewide Highway Patrol auxiliary composed of citizens to assist the regular state patrol in rural areas in times of emergency authorized by the state in a letter to the Department of Motor Vehicles. The department is attempting to recruit several thousand able bodied citizens of good character for the work. Such recruits will serve without pay and must agree to furnish transportation to and from posts of duty assigned to them without cost to the state. NAVAL RESERVE Plans for the local Naval district's participation in a vast, nation-wide Naval officer procurement program starting May 1 were announced today by the Navy Recruiting office. The drive is intended to obtain thousands of officer candidates annually from the ranks of college freshmen and sophomores and high school seniors who will enlist under the provisions of Class V-1 US Naval Reserve. Fullerton junior college, it was learned this morning, has been accredited by the Navy department to be included in the training program. SHORE GUARDS Opportunity was open today to scores of Southland residents to guard the home shores. The Navy is looking for men between 17 and 50 years of age to enlist for duty in patrolling coastal waters, stating that qualified applicants will be enlisted in Class M-2 of the Naval Reserve which was established to provide personnel for duty in salvage units and harbor, coastal and offshore vessels. Thanks... To all my friends and fellow citizens for the confidence expressed by your votes and support of my candidacy for re-election to the city council last Tuesday. As in the past I will do my utmost to so conduct the affairs of my office as to warrant such confidence and friendship. LEO. J. SHERIDAN.
