Only Natural Gas Heating Equipment Prohibited By War Board Suspension
Installation of gas cooking, water heating, and refrigerating appliances are not restricted by the recent War Production order in effect today, suspending all natural gas heating installations and conversions of heating equipment to natural gas, according to government and utility officials.
Effective February 28, the order which applied immediately to California, 16 other states and the District of Columbia, was intended to assure adequate supplies of natural gas for war production without expanding present delivery facilities.
UTILITY OFFICIALS
According to utility officials there is no acute shortage of natural gas in the Southland, but there is a shortage of vital metals which would be required if present facilities were expanded to meet the requirements for additional war industries in this section. For this reason, current transmission equipment will be utilized to the fullest in delivering gas to war production, while gas for domestic heating and non-vital use is restricted by the order, as is the use of metal entailed in new non-defense heating installations.
IN RESIDENCES
"It should be noted," a utility spokesman said, "that the order does not restrict the installation of cooking, water heating, and refrigeration appliances in residences."
Navy Department Issues Appeal For Loan of Military Binoculars
BULLETIN
To expedite receipt of binoculars donated to the Navy, officials today asked that all persons desiring to turn their glasses over to the government, forward them direct to the Naval observatory, Washington, D.C.
US Navy Department officials today, through the local district office, issued an urgent appeal to citizens possessing high power binoculars suitable for use by naval forces to donate the instruments for military use for the duration of the war.
Only glasses meeting service requirements can be accepted with the following two main sizes having been found to be most practicable: 6 by 30 and 7 by 50. Any glass of less than six power is of small value for naval purposes, it was stated.
So that standardization can be maintained, the glasses must be either Zeiz or Bausen and Lomb type.
Binoculators donated should be delivered to the Stores office, Har-street entrance, Naval Supply depot, San Diego.
Book Information
Reading & Writing
Christopher Columbus came close to discovering the Pacific Ocean as well as the New World, according to Professor Samuel Elst Morison of Harvard, who has written a book that will probably remain the best story of the great discoverer and his voyages in existence. It's called "Admiral of the Ocean Sea" and will get off to a flying start when the Book-of-the-Month club begins to send it out to its members as a March selection.
On his fourth journey to the New World, Dr. Morison points out, Columbus anchored on Christmas eve 1502 at what is now the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal. The Indians tried to explain to him that this was an asthmus between two seas, but Columbus was too weary after the long voyage to undertake the additional overland trip that would have brought him to the Pacific. Wehn he failed to find a strait, he continued on down the coast in search of gold.
EMINENT HISTORIAN
Dr. Morison, who is one of our most eminent historians, did a unique research job for his great book. He actually sailed over the course of Columbus' four voyages himself. At various times he used a 147-foot barkentine, a 47-foot sketch, a cutter loaned him by the Haitian government, and a patrol boat of the Cuban navy.
Checking with Columbus' own journal, Dr. Morison actually located the exact site of the discoverer's first settlement, Navidad, on the coast of Santo Domingo—a place never previously identified. He verified many of Columbus' scientific observations which "armchair Admirals" had pooh-poohed.
Naval Reserve Plans Enlistment Of 80,000 College Students Soon
Planning to enlist 80,000 college students between 17 and 19, inclusive in the Naval Reserve and grant them time to complete education qualifying them for training that will lead to commissions, the US Navy has announced a new program effective this week.
Under the program, which is in line with the Navy's policy of encouraging youths to get as much education as possible, the men will be members of the Navy on inactive duty as soon as they receive the oath of allegiance and in this status will fall under jurisdiction of the Selective Service program.
The men will be enlisted as Seamen, second class, in class V-1 and placed on inactive duty so that they may continue in college at their own expense for the equivalent of two academic years, taking courses recommended by the Navy Department, stressing mathematics, physics and physical training.
TIRE BOARD
Obsolete size tires, heretofore for sale to anyone., were today banned to all purchasers save those eligible for new tire certificates, as the Anaheim Tire Rationing board announced March quotas for their district. Additional bad news for passenger car drivers was the statement that quotas included no provision for the rationing of retread tires for this classification.
New Asst. Mgr. At J. C. Penney Store
H. H Reece, former store manager in San Fernando, is the new assistant manager of Anaheim's J. C. Penney company here today, replacing Dennis Parkle, who left this week to San Diego where he will fill the vacant position he held in Anaheim in a new Penney organization to open there, March 24.
Reece reported to Manager Truman W. Stuard on Monday. Before his San Fernando position, he was with the Penney store in Brawley for six years.
