Clinic Proprietor Faces Indictment Involuntary Manslaughter Charge Result of Death of Anaheim Woman Dr. Richard A. Carter, indicted head of the Carter Neurological clinic in Garden Grove, is scheduled to appear before Superior Court Judge Harry G. Westover tomorrow morning to enter his plea to a charge of involuntary manslaughter. The indictment was returned by the county grand jury late Thursday, Dr. Carter surrendering the following day and asking for a continuance. The indictment was the outgrowth of an investigation conducted by the grand jury over the death last September 16 of Mrs. Virginia Dorothy Lamb, 22-year-old Anaheim woman. Testimony disclosed by return of the indictment indicates that Dr. Carter is accused of negligent diagnosis and treatment of Mrs. Lamb, whose death took place in the clinic on the day following her admission there as a mental patient. Claims Disclosed It is claimed that Dr. Carter made a quick diagnosis of dementia praecox in Mrs. Lamb's case, that a "shock" treatment of insulin was applied, which caused her to lapse into a coma from which she did not recover. It is further claimed that she was left unattended during this coma, Dr. Carter having returned to his Long Beach offices, and that her husband, Alvin Earl Lamb, was alone with her when she died. The famous Handel oratorio, "The Messiah," will be presented during the evening by the combined choirs of the White Temple and Salem Evangelical churches, under the direction of Miss Betty Fackiner. The oratorio was given last Sunday night at the Salem Evangelical church: Program Christmas Eve The children's service by the Sunday school and parochial school children of the Zion Lutheran church will be held on Christmas Eve at 7 o'clock. There will be a tree and Santa Claus will distribute gifts. Regular German and English services will be held on Christmas morning. The church will be decorated with a life-size Nativity scene, prepared by the Senior Walther league of the church. Rev. G. Carroll Rector, pastor of the Wesley Methodist church, will speak at 11 o'clock next Sunday morning on the subject, "The Birthday of the Church." Special music by the choir will include "Break Forth" (Bach) and "Kings to Thy Rising" (Butcher). Mrs. Ardis Adams is the director and Mrs. Margaret Woodbury pianist. The Church School will have its Christmas celebration and program at 7 o'clock Sunday evening. There will be a tree, Santa Claus, processional and program by the children, and a play by the young people entitled, "Mothers of the World." Guest Soloist Baptist church. Mrs. Louis Schroeder will sing "Gesu Bambino" (Yon), accompanied on the violin by Herbert Stabbert and on the organ by Mrs. W. Gooden. Christmas in England The Young Peoples society will present the Christmas program at 7:30 in the evening, under leadership of Herbert Stabbert. Variety of music is planned and Mrs. Ella Sitenhof of England will tell how Christmas is celebrated in that country. The Sunday School program will be held at 7 o'clock Christmas Eve, under direction of Superintendent Walter Schroeder, who will take part in the program which will also include the pageant, "The Twelve Gifts." Principal Christmas services at the Grace Lutheran church will be held at 7:30 o'clock Christmas Eve and 10 o'clock Christmas morning. The Sunday School choirs will present the formal program which will include special music, recitations and a dramatization, "Away in a Manger." Miss Elizabeth Hunziker will direct the choir. On Christmas morning, the pastor, Rev. C. H. S. Hunziker, will speak on the theme, "Gifts from the Magi for the Savior King." There will be appropriate Christmas music by the organ and choir. Program Sunday Night Church of Christ will have its Christmas program next Sunday evening, with the beginners, primary and junior departments of the Sunday school presenting a group of songs and recitations during the first part of the evening. August Hein, 73 Called by Death Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from Hilgenfeld's funeral parlor for August Hein, 73, a resident of Anaheim for 36 years. Hein died Sunday morning at the family residence, 1003 East Broadway, after an extended illness. He is survived by six daughters, Mrs Henery Sholer of Washington; Mrs Walter Bittner and Mrs Edith Neubauer, both of Anaheim; Mrs Sumter Bourg of Los Angeles; Mrs Ralph Tweedy of Orland and Mrs Joe Hall of made a quick diagnosis of dementia praecox in Mrs. Lamb's case, that a "shock" treatment of insulin was applied, which caused her to lapse into a coma from which she did not recover. Lamb now lives with his parents in Garden Grove. Indictment Quoted Phraseology of the indictment is that Dr. Carter "willfully, unlawfully and feloniously, while in commission of an unlawful act not amounting to a felony, and in the commission of a lawful act which might produce death in an unlawful manner, and without due caution and circumspection, kill Virginia Dorothy Lamb." The grand jury called several witnesses, including prominent mental specialist and autopsy experts, before it while deliberating the case. Among these were Dr. Franklin J. Van Meter and Dr. William H. Worley of Norwalk, Dr. Grace Thomas Bennett of Camarillo, and Dr. Frank Webb of Los Angeles. Other witnesses included Harold H. Boyce, district attorney investigator, Alvin E. Lamb, Francis C. Sweetman, father of Mrs. Lamb; Dr. Ralph E. Hawes of Huntington Beach, Mrs. Lamb's family doctor; Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Austin and Mr. and Mrs. Ward, neighbors of the clinic, and two clinic nurses, Mrs. Mary Rhode and Miss Elizabeth Monroe. Guest Soloist Calvary Baptist church's minister, Rev. Earl R. Berg, will conclude his weekly series of Christmas messages by speaking on the subject, "What is in the Cradle?" The children's message will be "Why the Chimes Rang." Dr. C. O..Patterson, guest soloist, will sing "The Birthday of the King." The evening worship will be given over to the choir for the presentation of the Christmas cantata, "A Child is Born," by Noel Benson. The choir is under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Wilson, with Miss Betty Hanson as pianist. Soloists will be Mrs. Helen Hanson, Mrs. Ruth Wilson, James Wilson and Mrs. Ethel Hempshall, vocalists, and Donald Hess, trumpetist. Duets will be sung by Mrs. Hempshall and Elizabeth Barlett and Mrs. Hanson and Miss Bartlett, while Betty Wright, Dorothy Marvin and Verna Wade will sing a trio selection. This service begins at 11:30 o'clock Christmas Eve. There will be a second celebration of the eucharist at 10 o'clock on Christmas morning. The County Man New Warden at Chino An Orange county man, Kenyon Scudder of Balboa, has assumed his new duties as warden of the new southern California state prison under construction at Chino. He was given the appointment last Friday by the state prison board, and the selection of Scudder was announced by Judge Isaac Pacht, chairman of the board. Scudder, who has been serving as warden of the federal prison at Chillicothe, Ohio, will receive $7,-200 a year until the prison is finished, and then an additional $500 per month for maintenance. Judge Pacht said the new warden had formerly served as superintendent of the Whittier state school for boys, superintendent of the Preston school of industry at Ione, and for nine years as chief probation officer of Los Angeles county. He joined the federal prison system several years ago and on two occasions was tendered the post cf assistant director of the federal prison system in Washington, D. C., Judge Pacht added. Scudder told newsmen he had formulated no administrative plans as yet and declined to estimate the total personnel he would need at the new prison until he has seen the budget. Vincent P.
