New Romances Replace Those Electricity Plays Leading Role Now Southern California Edison Company Important to Present Life The days of the dons are past. No longer do the patios of adobe ranch houses ring with the sound of a fiesta's songs and laughter. No longer do creaking carriages carry visitors between the haciendas located on Rancho San Juan de Santa Ana, from which Anaheim was formed; Mission Viejo, Trabuco, Boca de la Playa, El Sobrante, Niguel, Santiago de Santa Ana, and the other great land grants of Orange county. These colorful scenes now are dim figures on the fascinating tapestry into which is woven the history of Anaheim and Orange county. New days are here, and new romance has supplanted the old. Today's romance is in commercial, agricultural and industrial progress—in businesses being developed, land being scientifically cultivated, industries forging ahead. Electricity Essential "Electricity in abundance and at low cost is an essential element in present day progress," said R. E. Bacon, division manager for the Southern California Edison company. "Adaptable to a wide variety of applications, electrical service is an important factor in farm, home, business and industrial life." Within a brief span, Above, the Southern California Edison company's Long Beach Steam-Electric generating station is one of the largest and most efficient in the United States. Left, this double row of gigantic boilers of the Edison steam station is as high as a six-story building. Below left, these tall transmission towers carry the wires from Edison's Long Beach steam station across the entrance to the Long Beach harbor. Below right, power to generate electricity equal to the driving power of 133,000 horses is contained in this turbine generator in Plant No. 3 of Edison's Long Beach steam station. Electricity Essential "Electricity in abundance and at low cost is an essential element in present day progress," said R. E. Bacon, division manager for the Southern California Edison company. "Adaptable to a wide variety of applications, electrical service is an important factor in farm, home, business and industrial life. Within a brief span, electricity has changed from a 'miracle' into the willing servant of millions. It is a necessity which contributes to the comfort, convenience and profitable endeavor of every person. 'New uses of electricity are constantly being developed. Inventors and research laboratories steadily are producing various new appliances of value in various ways in modern life. In the home, for example, one of electricity's latest contributions is in the provision of year around air conditioning comfort. The maintenance of comfortable atmospheric conditions throughout the home is desirable in every way, and many new homes are being equipped with electrical equipment to provide this feature. Air Conditioning Accepted 'Air conditioning has been accepted generally by business as a proved profit-producing factor, and an instrument of promoting good will. New lighting developments are also of additional value to business. Customers are attracted to the well lighted store exterior. Inside the store, the display of merchandise under adequate lighting is a direct stimulant to sales. 'Innovations in the use of electricity in industry are steadily being introduced. New machines motivated by electric power, new applications of electric heating, and various technical processes involving use of electric energy are contributing to industrial progress. The availability of economical electric power, further, has encouraged many industries to locate in Orange county and elsewhere in southern California. Agriculture Benefitted "Agriculture, too, has shared in the benefits of electrical development. Agriculture Benefitted "Agriculture, too, has shared in the benefits of electrical development. Southern California ranchers are particularly fortunate in that electrical service is available to practically every rural area. The uses of electricity on the farm number around 200, with the use of electric power for irrigation pumping leading the list in California. Electric pumps have the advantages of low initial investment, ability to be operated at the turn of a switch, low maintenance costs, and the quality of noting readily changes in water levels. "Electrical service for southern and central California has been supplied for nearly 50 years by the Southern California Edison company. As new uses of electricity have been introduced, the Edison company has extended its service facilities to meet the increase in demand. At present, Edison customers receive electricity from three main sources which are inter-connected to assure unfailing service: from hydro-electric plants in the Big Creek-San Joaquin River area, from the Long Beach steam-electric station of the company, and from the company's generating units at Boulder Dam. These generating sources, combined with others of lesser size, provide Orange county and southern and central California with adequate electric power for years to come." Reciprocity is a much abused word that seems to be practiced almost everywhere but on the highways. Christmas Seals Should Be Used Close of First Month's Sale Shows Anaheim Returns Amount to $387 "Are you using the Christmas Seals you received through the mails just after Thanksgiving?" This is the question that is asked of the citizens of Orange county by Mrs. James M. Anderson, Santa Ana, secretary of the Orange County Tuberculosis & Health association. "When we put Christmas Seals on our holiday letters and packages, we are spreading to others the message that tuberculosis can be controlled and can be prevented," Mrs. Anderson said. "Further, when we remit our money for the seals we buy to the Orange County Tuberculosis & Health association, we are making possible local activities which have as their goal the complete eradication of tuberculosis. "The program of the association is year-round and is planned in cooperation with local medical groups, the health department, the school department, and all other agencies concerned with the control of this disease. It is designed to find cases of tuberculosis, bring them to treatment, and prevent the spread of infection. Through this program, human suffering is prevented and lives are saved." Receipts from the county sale of Christmas Seals passed the $4-351.62 mark yesterday, and returns from Anaheim are $387.40.
