Sandwash Scene of Rabbit Hunt
In the early eighties the area north of Anaheim between what is now Highway 101 and Placentia avenue, was known as the sandwash. Rabbit drives were held three or four times a year, 20 to 30 men being in the party. About 100 jackrabbits would be the extent of the kill.
The late Capt. Vic Schumacher always was master of ceremonies. The day following the drive the captain would entertain at his home on East Orangethorpe avenue. Much merriment was indulged in and all the neighbors were invited.
Before coming here, Schumacher was a member of the Chicago police force and was engaged in the Haymarket riot there.

This community was founded in 1901 by a few men of vision who purchased a large section of mesa land upon which to build homes high above the rolling breakers. In 1904 the city's name was Pacific City but in 1909 this was changed to Huntington Beach, at which time Huntington Beach was incorporated. The city has had a wide variety of adventure since. In 1920 oil was discovered here. Due to this fact, the whip-stocking method of drilling for oil was discovered and inaugurated here, and also because of this fact the great oil pool underlying the Pacific ocean off-shore of Huntington Beach was discovered and has been proclaimed to be worth five hundred millions of dollars. This discovery gave to Huntington Beach a great boom, but it slowed down the building of homes. However, in the past five years Huntington Beach has taken on new life in the matter of civic pride, and new buildings in the Civic center have been completed, many new business blocks, and a large amount of nice, comfortable homes.

Cal-Juices, Inc., less than three years of age, has taken its place as one of the vital factors in the life of Anaheim because of the important place it maintains in the citrus industry. It occupies a large building on North Olive street and employs a large staff of workmen steadily. President of the board of directors for the second consecutive years is J. W. Crill of Garden Grove, and the general manager is Harry W. Pierce.
Cal-Juices, Inc., produces Real Gold pure orange juice, Real Gold orange and lemon concentrates, Lark dairy orange, and numbers of other products. The plant was, in the beginning, planned for canning pure orange juice only, but later it developed that there was a heavier demand for and more profit in the concentrates; so this activity became the major factor. The concentrates are of various strengths, ranging from 5 to 1 up to 50 to 1.
The concentrates may be made early in the season, since fruit must reach its maxin sweetness before the pure j

in the season, since the must reach its maximum fitness before the pure juice should be canned. The market for concentrates does not open, however, until several months after the product has been manufactured, so the distribution of one season's run of concentrate does not actually take place until about the beginning of the following season.
The pure juice market is somewhat different inasmuch as pure juice is consumed 12 months out of the year.
A feature of the plant's activities is the management's willingness to work closely with the sales department, and, when the sales department uncovers a potential market for an item, the plant management endeavors to prepare a product and a package that will fit that market. The samll, consumer's package of concentrate is an example. It is an eight-ounce package which makes 48 ounces of orangeade. It is proving popular and is finding a ready market.
Realizing that it is one thing to create a market for a product and another thing to retain that market in face of competition, the plant management stresses high quality and quality uniformity in its operations; for only by giving the public consistent quality can the markets uncovered by the
