Miss Florence Melrose Backs
St. Anthony's Church Of Long Beach Scene Of Beautiful Service
St. Anthony's church at Long Beach was the setting Sunday afternoon of the impressive rites joining Miss Florence Melrose Backs and Duncan John Powers in marriage.
The altar was banked on each side with large white chrysanthemums, gladioli, and tree ferns. Rev. Father Henry Gross of St. Boniface church read the service. One hundred and twenty-four guests were present.
The bride entered the church on the arm of her father, Fred A. Backs, and was met at the altar by the bridegroom, attended by Robert Crosby. The beautiful bride wore a gown of filmy hyacinth blue tulle which was, in color, almost a duplicate of her mother's wedding gown. The tight-fitting bodice was hand embroidered in sequins and delicate harmonizing shades of silk. The bouffant skirt gave a fairy-like grace to the costume. Her long veil of the same material fell from a coronet of orange blossoms and ruchings of tulle. She wore long silk mitts of the same shade and in her slipper was a good-luck sixpense. Her bouquet was made of orchids.
Mrs. Backs, mother of the bride, was lovely in a formal gown of beaded black lace and net. She wore a corsage of orchids. Mrs. Charlotte Powers, mother of the groom, wore a formal gown of blue crepe with a becoming hat to match. She wore a pink and white
of orange blossoms and ruchings of tulle. She wore long silk mitts of the same shade and in her slipper was a good-luck sixpense. Her bouquet was made of orchids.

Ushers were Richard Melrose, cousin of the bride, and Theodore Stromberger and Herman Stromberger of Los Angeles.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Backs, and a great-granddaughter of two of the original colonists of Anaheim. Her grandfather, Richard Melrose, was a well known early day attorney. He was one of the first editors of the Gazette and later represented this county in the legislature.
The bride is a graduate of the University of Southern California and her sorority is Zeta Tau Alpha. She is a past president of the Junior Ebell club and is prominent in social circles in this city. The groom is the only son of Mrs. Charlotte Powers of Los Angeles, and is a reserve officer in the army air corps. He is also a graduate of the University of Southern California and took a prominent part in college athletics. He is affiliated with Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, and is a member of the faculty of the Hollywood high school.
After the wedding ceremony the guests were invited to the Pacific Coast club where a reception was held and later a buffet luncheon was served. Assisting Mrs. Backs at the reception were Miss Winifred Melrose and Mrs. Henry Kuchel, aunts of the bride, and Mrs. Joseph Carroll, Mrs. Fred Zeppenfeld and Mrs. Florence Davis. The huge, tiered wedding cake was cut by the bride and shortly afterwards the young couple left on a honeymoon trip to San Francisco and other points in northern California. The bride's going-away gown was of mauve wool, her black hat was trimmed in harmonizing shades and with it she wore silver fox fur.
Mr. and Mrs. Powers will be at home to friends after January 1 in their new home at 3931 Welland avenue, Los Angeles.

Miss Rosalie Hein Becomes Bride Of Herschel Welty of Orange In Impressive Ceremony Friday
Miss Rosalie Hein and Herschel Welty were married last night (Wednesday) at an impressive ceremony held at the Presbyterian church in Orange and officiated over by Dr. Robert Burns McAuley pastor of the church.
Huge white chrysanthemums, palms and ferns set the stage for the candelighted ceremony, witnessed by 100 guests. The bride was radiant in a gown of white satin with leg o' mutton sleeves, sweetheart neck-line inset with lice, and train. She wore her mother's veil caught with a halo of seed pearls and orange blossoms. For her bouquet, she carried orchids and lilies of the valley.
Miss Wauneva Gunnett was maid of honor and wore a gown of apricot organdy and carried talismans and delphinium. Miss Grace Welty acted as bridesmaid, and wore a powder blue marquisette. Miss Agnes Bettendorf was also bridesmaid, and wore a similar gown of turquoise green. Both carried dainty nose-gays.
Kathleen Gilmore acted as flower girl, and she was dressed in yellow net over taffeta. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore of Anaheim. Jimmy Allan Welty was ringbearer and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Welty of Santa Ana.
Chester Welty acted as best man, and Donald and David Welty were ushers. Mrs. J. T. Weaver played the organ while Miss Margaret Hein sang "Because" and "I Love You Truly."
At the reception held at the Fellowship hall in Orange, Mrs. W. R. Hein, mother of the bride, and Mrs. Arthur Welty, mother of the bridegroom, received. Assistants dutifully wore Mrs.
Shower Compliments Mrs. Woodrome
Mrs. Chauncey Woodrome was honored Thursday evening with a dainty layette shower given by Mrs. Roy Eldridge and Mrs. Florence DeWitt at the former's home, 419 South Helena street.
Several appropriate games were played, with prizes going to Mrs. Richard Fuller, Mrs. Helen Quinn, Mrs. Dayton Smith and Mrs. Don Harrison. After the entertainment, the guests presented Mrs. Woodrome with a high-chair.
Pink chrysanthemums were arranged about the room, and pink and gold candles were table appointments. The high-chair was resplendent with a huge pink bow. Refreshments were served later in the evening.
Complimenting Mrs. Woodrome were her mother, Mrs. S. Mrs. Katie Peterson To Visit Old Home
Mrs. Katie Peterson of 318 South Bush street was honored Sunday at a farewell dinner given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carleton Peterson of Los Angeles. Mrs. Peterson left Tuesday for a three-months' stay in her home town, El Reno, Okla.
Accompanying Mrs. Peterson Sunday to Los Angeles were her son, David, and daughter, Marie Bruten. Mrs. Peterson will visit another daughter, Mrs. Mabel Schuldt, and sons, Clarence and Verne Peterson, in El Reno.
Friends Gather at Gledhill Home
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gledhill of 411 North Emily street were hosts Sunday to a group of friends.
Mrs. Gledhill has been suffering from a back injury, and friends brought good wishes for her recovery. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hansen of Los Angeles, Rev. and Mrs. David Loofbourrow and daugther, Nellie Mae, of Puente, and Mr. and Mrs. Merle Strand and children, Janice and Richard, of El Monte.

Assisting in hostess duties were Mrs. Ben Hein and Mrs. John Steele, aunts of the bride, Miss Alice Darby and Miss Evelyn Darby, cousins of the new Mrs. Welty, and Miss Emma Jean Gust.
The newly-weds left for a five-day honeymoon to Las Vegas, Boulder Dam and Arizona cities. For her going away costume, the bride wore a soldier blue suit with Indian earth accessories and wore the orchids from her wedding bouquet.
The new Mrs. Welty is a graduate of Anaheim union high school, class of 1939, and is queen of the Anaheim Job's Daughters. Her husband graduated from Orange high school, class of 1937, and is a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in that city. Both attended Fullerton junior college. Mr. Welty is a salesman for the Buttercream Bread company, branch of the Weber bread company, in Orange. Mr. and Mrs. Welty will establish residence in Orange.
Marriage Disclosed
Word has been received here of the marriage of Mrs. John Cook to Edward Groover of 29 Palms October 8. Further details are not known.

Miss LaRae Riley Honored at Party
Miss LaRae Riley was honored guest Friday when a group of friends met at the H.B.Pearson home on North Lemon street for a birthday party.
Following a delicious six o'clock dinner, the girls were treated to the theater. Many lovely gifts were presented to the honoree guest.
Enjoying the evening were Ka Wilson, Dorothy Pearson, Jun Atwell, Marjorie Knapp, Mary Ward, Ruby Ann Harbeson and the honored guest.
Mrs. Pemberton Hostess to Class
Mrs. Leah Pemberton was hostess Friday evening to members of the Wesley Methodist Church Bible class at her home, 631 Norl Los Angeles street, for a gala Thanksgiving party.
Rev. G. Carroll Rector and Mr Rector were specially honored when asked to make two-minute speeches to record. Mrs. A Oelke was chairman of the entertainment which consisted musical numbers and recitations.
Refreshments were served late in the evening by Mrs. J.Haines and Mrs.Nora Cain.
Backs Marries Duncan Powers Sun
Anita Schwager and Walter Nankervis Married Friday
Miss Anita Arlene Schwager, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. LeRoy Marsh, and Walter Nankervis, son of Mrs. Lulu Nankervis of Garden Grove, were married Friday at 5 o'clock at a beautiful ceremony held at the Marsh home 300 North Janss street.
Shaggy white chrysanthemums and white candleabra made a gorgeous background for the wedding at which Rev. Virgil Ledbetter of Colton, formerly pastor of the Calvary Baptist church here, officiated. Miss Audrey Nichols was maid of honor and John Nankervis served as best man.
Miss Schwager was dressed in a lovely colonial style grown of white taffeta and carried a wedding bouquet of gardenias and orchids. Miss Pauline Houts sang "My Prayer" and "The Sweetest Story Ever Told," accompanied by Mrs. Ruth Charleybois of Santa Ana.
A lovely reception followed, with Miss Eleanor Marsh, Mrs. R. H. Marsh, Mrs. Henry Van Delden and Miss Peggy Lou Barthaumm assisting in hostess duties. Highlighting the table was a three-tiered wedding cake, topped with a miniature bride and groom.
The bride and groom slipped away unnoticed on a honeymoon trip to San Diego and Mexico. They will reside at the Nankervis ranch in Garden Grove until further plans are made.
MARILYN ROGERS FETED AT PARTY
Returning home from an afternoon show, Miss Marilyn Rogers was pleasantly surprised Saturday when she stepped into her home to discover a group of friends gathered to wish her "Happy Birthday."
Mr. and Mrs. J. Lee Rogers of 755 North Topeka street, parents of the feted guest, were hosts of the affair. Various games were played during the evening, and the room was cleverly appointed in pastel shades, with pink roses centering the table. After the delicious 6 o'clock dinner, highlighted by a beautiful birthday cake, Miss Rogers opened lovely gifts marking her 16th birthday.
Complimenting Miss Rogers were the Misses Ruth Thompson, Betty Ross, Betty Benson, Bernice Tompkins and Don Chamberlain, Jack Wilson, Dick Reynolds, Lewis Johnston and Franz Lehmer.
Lois Rebekahs Entertain Guests
Lois Rebekah lodge met Friday evening for their regular meeting at the Odd Fellows' hall.
Officers of the newly instituted Acacia Rebekah lodge of Huntington Beach were visitors of the meeting as was Mrs. Mollie Bates of Estiocta, Oregon.
During the business session, future meetings were discussed. It was announced that the next regular meeting will be held December 6, and will be an initiation and election of officers.
Girl Scout Regional Director Confers With Local Officers
Mrs. Norma Northberg, Big Trigger regional, director of San Francisco, was guest of honor at a luncheon meeting of Girl Scout leader held at the home of Mrs. Erne Ganahl, 501 North Clementi street, Friday noon.
Miss Northberg gave a general analysis of girl scouting and outlined duties of council member troop mothers and leaders. Ms. L. H. Louden, first Girl Scout commissioner, and Miss Adan Louise Wilcox, local scout director were among those present.
Representatives of sponsoring organizations, council members and troop mothers were Mrs. M. Gauer, Mrs. C. A. Pearson, M. R. G. Helsing, Mrs. Charles Schuhr Mrs. Arthur Roquet, Mrs. Howe Tews, Mrs. William Webb, M. Earle Jackson, Mrs. C. A. Staples Mrs. J. W. Wilson, Mrs. O. Rimpau, Mrs. H. At 4 o'clock Miss Northberg met with leaders who were unable to be present at the luncheon at Mrs Wilcox's scout bungalow on City street and outlined duties of leaders.
