CAN YOU BELIEVE?
That a third four-year term for President Roosevelt could or would:
Balance the budget.
Solve the problem of unemployment.
Restore confidence to capital and industry.
Reduce burdensome tax handicaps.
Reconcile labor factions.
Regain his respect for the Constitution.
Secure parity prices for farm products.
Renounce demands for executive power.
Restore confidence in the Supreme Court.
Desist his business baiting.
Dismiss young radical counsellors.
Stop playing politics with relief.
Stay in Washington half the time.
Permit Congress a hand in foreign treaties.
Renounce support of Tammanyized machines.
Resist fourth-term temptation.
Members of Governor Olson's official family who have traveled in State cars, lived on State expense accounts and campaigned on State time—while attempting to "purge" members of the Economy Bloc in the Legislature—will soon be required to talk about it under oath! A legislative investigating committee, named to inquire into asserted interference with the work of the Legislature, plans to take the guilty officials for a very, very rough ride.

Despite Hitler and high water British mills are still operating and British merchant ships are still plying the seven seas. Visible proof may be found on the shelves of almost any California clothing store. English woolens are still on sale and are still coming in—by shiploads!
Our undercover operative on the Willkie special train sends in a belated report that the best extemporaneous speech of the California tour was made by a Willkie admirer, rather than by the candidate. At Sacramento, a woman newspaper vendor, who has sold papers in the State Capitol for years past, pressed her way through the throng to the G.O.P. candidate and exclaimed: "Mr. Willkie. I hope we have an inauguration next January; not a coronation!"

Defense zone against Nazi persecution was erected which stretches from the Arctic circle to the danelles. This one is completely of territory which Russia has won since the outbreak of war, so that a Nazi invasion would be met outside the border Russia proper. Having compelled this barrier without encountering major difficulties anywhere in Finland, the Soviet expedition this strategy from the defense to the axis-imposed settlement the Vienna conference upon mania averted, for the moment least, a further Russian attack which might have resulted Stalin taking over all of Russia and becoming undisputed member of the Balkans. This would vitally endangered both Hungary and Italy. Hence the desperate speed with which the Vienna conference and the Nazification of mania was effected.
There can be little doubt that Hitler still retains his cheers plans, set forth in Mein Krieg for the eventual conquest of immeasureably rich wheat of the Russian Ukraine. Then an eventual clash between many and Russia is inevitable. This clash, however, Hitler should defer until after he has secured victory over England and devote his entire attention to subjugation of the Soviet. These resources of food and materials Germany would bear the threshold of the realization her old dream of world domination.
Recently Soviet pressure Finland has not only become more apparent, it has been slowly increasing, as Stalin prepares his own positions for outmaneuering the Nazis. Already a part of far-reaching import has been concluded between Sweden and Sweden, and their credible rumors that Sweden also been offered military antees by the Soviet. The munization of Finland, then, spread the influence of the fringes of Denmark, ing Russia in an ideal position herself to take the offence against the Reich.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH
"Unreality" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon on Sunday in all Churches of Christ, Scientist. The Golden Text is from Deuteronomy; "Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the Lord he is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath: there is none else."
A Scriptural citation in the Lesson-Serman includes these passages from the Psalms: "The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? ... Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. ... For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion; in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock." These words from the first epistle of John are also presented: "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear."
Selections from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy state: "The understanding, even in a degree, of the divine All-power destroys fear, and plants the feet in the true path—the path which leads to the house built without hands 'eternal in the heavens'."
DEMOCRATS TO MEET
Orange County Democratic association will hold a Rochevelt for President meeting at Santa Ana junior college tonight at 8 o'clock. John C. Packard, campaign manager, will be the speaker.

THIRD TERMITES AT WORK
JEFFERSON'S ANTI THIRD-TERM STATEMENT
HAMILERSTONE
Having completed the barrier without encountering any difficulties anywhere save Finland, the Soviet expanded its strategy from the defensive axis-imposed settlement of two months proceeding in Washington between Russia and the United States fit in perfectly with all other evidence that Stalin is co-operating with the axis in endless series of those border fights in which the Soviet has had so much experience. This would embarrass Japan's Asiatic plans to a marked degree, for every time Look, what they soul hold imagine it To lie that way thou go whence thou cam'st.
—Shak
The zone against Nazi penetration was erected which stretched on the Arctic circle to the Darrelles. This one is composed merely of territory which Russia won since the outbreak of the war, so that a Nazi invasion would meet outside the borders of Russia proper. Having completed the barrier without encountering any difficulties anywhere save Finland, the Soviet expanded its strategy from the defensive axis-imposed settlement of Vienna conference upon Russia averted, for the moment at least, a further Russian thrust which might have resulted in an taking over all of Rumania becoming undisputed master of the Balkans. This would have totally endangered both Hungary and Italy. Hence the desperate aid with which the Vienna salute and the Nazification of Russia was effected.
There can be little doubt that ever still retains his cherished pass, set forth in Mein Kampf, the eventual conquest of the measureably rich wheat fields of Russian Ukraine. Therefore eventual clash between Germany and Russia is inevitable. As clash, however, Hitler hopes defer until after he has secured victory over England and can note his entire attention to the negation of the Soviet. With the resources of food and raw materials Germany would be upon threshold of the realization of the old dream of world domination.
Recently Soviet pressure upon Ireland has not only become once apparent, it has been steadily increasing, as Stalin prepares own positions for outmaneuvering the Nazis. Already a trade off of far-reaching importance has concluded between Russia and Sweden, and there are reliable rumors that Sweden has no been offered military guarantees by the Soviet. The commission of Finland, then, would lead the influence of the Soviet fringes of Denmark, placing Russia in an ideal position itself to take the offensive against the Reich.
TALIN SEEKS FRIENDS— persistent rumors that secretotiations have been for the last two months proceeding in Washington between Russia and the United States fit in perfectly with all other evidence that Stalin is co-operating with the axis in name only, while in reality he is waging against Germany a struggle which is none the less deadly because it is silent and unspecacular. The obvious policies of the United States are so clear that it would be impossible to imagine any kind of a pact between this nation and a Russia that was truly an ally of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. If Stalin is persuaded that eventually a total victory for Hitler in Europe would lead unavoidably to Nazi-Soviet conflict, and the evidence available all points in that direction, then the time has come for the Soviet to do everything possible to hinder the German war machine while seeking alternative sources for the machinery and industrial supplies which Russia needs, some of which have been imported into the Soviet from the Reich. Not only could the United States supply these essentials, but America could also provide economic advantages which Germany cannot offer.
The substantiated reports that Germany and Japan have already concluded a pact which may be anything from a purely defensive understanding to a full-fledged military alliance designed to aid Japan to become absolute mistress of Asia while Germany realizes her ambitions in other parts of the world, cannot but accentuate Stalin's desire for new friends. In all the world today only the United States and, to a much lesser degree, Great Britain offer even a minimum of the qualifications which Stalin must consider essential. In return for economic and trade concessions from the United States, Russia may very probably be offering to bring extreme pressure against the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo, to provide an endless series of those border fights in which the Soviet has had so much experience. This would embarrass Japan's Asiatic plans to a marked degree, for every time there has been frontier fighting between Russia and Japan, Japanese troops in important numbers have had to be withdrawn from China. Now the Japanese army is stretched out along a much longer front than ever and yet another call upon the already strained resources of the island empire would certainly end all possibility of further armed expansion toward the Dutch East Indies, might speedily bring about the utter collapse of the entire campaign in China.

"Daddy telephoned last night from way off somewhere"
"Mother says folks didn't have telephones once upon a time and she wonders what they ever did without them. Just think, she says, how tired she'd be, if our telephone wasn't here to help her do her errands every day. And tonight, she says, Daddy will call us from way, way off, to say Goodnight and tell us when he'll be home. I'm going to stay right here beside the telephone until Daddy calls. I'm going to ask him what Mother means when she says, every night, 'Little girl, sleep safe: we have a telephone!'"

If Mahaffey were asked, which he was, about his business history, he would probably tell you as he did us that he has never been out of work in his life. He has been a farmer boy, has cut shoes, done carpentry work, and has had experience in all phases of the furniture business. He isn't ashamed of the fact that he has worked in an ice house and sold tea and coffee, either.
Mahaffey first saw the light of day in Iriquois county, Illinois in 1881, and the next important event of his life was his marriage to Maude Cullum. They have three children, Roy, Gene and Helen. The daughter is now Mrs. Helen Schofield. He is a member of the Twin Falls, Idaho, Masonic lodge and is protestant in religion.
