ANAHEIM GAZETTE Established 1870 ORANGE COUNTY'S OLDEST NEWSPAPER HENRY KUCHEL, Editor and Publisher 1887-1935 The Anaheim Gazette has been owned and edited by the same family since 1875. Published every Thursday at 259 East Center Street, Anaheim, Calif. Subscription Per Year ...$2.00 Six Months ...$1.00 MRS. HENRY KUCHEL THEODORE B. KUCHEL Editors and Publishers Entered as second-class matter at the Post Office at Anaheim, California, under the Act of March 8, 1879. ONE NICE THING, ANYWAY Orange county may well be thankful for small favors, and be glad that, whatever else plagues its people at the moment, there is no recurrence of that unholy heat spell of one year ago. Who does not remember the stifling week of last September when the mercury stayed over 100 degrees, and where the ocean beaches were so hot that no one could get "heat relief" unless he found some shade. Things got so bad at our beaches, that people packed in under the several beach cities' piers (where there was shade) like so many sardines. At home, the bath tub gave some relief, but after all, no one could stay in a tub of cold water a week, so presumably everybody suffered from an "unusual" unusual climate. At any rate then, we have now, one less ill to plague us. Let us all be thankful. THIRD SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE SESSION Comes now the announcement of 1940's third special session of the legislature, called by Governor Olson today, to meet in Sacramento Friday afternoon. In his usual style, the Governor announces that relief funds are exhausted, and, to prevent starvation, the legislature must at once convene and appropriate more money for relief. This is in rather sharp contrast to the findings of the legislative committee on relief, apparently concurred in by the Olson-appointed director of relief, which were to the effect that the legislature had merely to meet one week from THIRD SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE SESSION Comes now the announcement of 1940's third special session of the legislature, called by Governor Olson today, to meet in Sacramento Friday afternoon. In his usual style, the Governor announces that relief funds are exhausted, and, to prevent starvation, the legislature must at once convene and appropriate more money for relief. This is in rather sharp contrast to the findings of the legislative committee on relief, apparently concurred in by the Olson-appointed director of relief, which were to the effect that the legislature had merely to meet one week from tomorrow and "unfreeze" previously appropriated relief funds so that they could be used at once. It was pointed out by the committee that, even assuming an empty relief treasury next week, the Governor had an emergency fund from which he could allocate all necessary monies until the "unfreezing" took place. The Olson administration was given $1,750,000 for its emergency fund, while the Merriam administration received only $1,000,000 for emergencies. True to his form, however, Governor Olson now determines that the whole thing is going to be done his way, and only his way. There ought to be little reason to argue with him over whether the session shall be one Friday or the next, and, perhaps on this triviality, no one will overly argue with him. If there are any hidden purposes involved, the chances are that they will be brought to light in the week-end debates in the state capitol. ANAHEIM RESIDENTS WILL ATTEND CHRISTMAS SEAL LUNCHEON HERE Several Anaheim residents are expected to attend the luncheon meeting of Orange county Christmas seal chairmen and committeemen at Staar's Orange Gardens, Harbor boulevard just north of Manchester boulevard, next Tuesday noon. Luncheon will be served at 12:30 o'clock and the meeting will last until 4 o'clock or later. This is one of the 11 regional seal sale conferences to be held in California to raise the curtain on the 1940 seal sale. In addition to Orange county citizens, representatives from associations in San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Long Beach, and Los Angeles are expected. The Orange county conference will be conducted by James G. Stone, executive secretary of the Los Angeles Tuberculosis & Health association, and Irene Carlson, supervisor of field service for the California Tuberculosis association. Some of the features prepared by Stone and Miss Carlson will be: Seal Sale successes and mistakes reviewed, plans and techniques for the 1940 Seal Sale discussed, 1940 campaign material displayed, and Seal Sale calendars and publicity kits distributed. From 10 o'clock to 12 workers will have opportunity to discuss any of the individual problems with the visiting executive secretary. Orange county persons particularly interested in the tuberculosis program financed by Christmas Seals who have not yet sent in their reservations for the 12:30 luncheon as listed above are urged to at once write or phone the Orange County Tuberculosis & Health association, Ltd., 112 West Fifth street, Santa Ana, Phone 4797. Judge Rules for Anaheim Dentist Damage action litigation which has been going on since last December was closed early this week when Superior Judge Franklin G. West handed down a ruling which cleared Dr. Paul S. Arnold, Anaheim dentist, of accusations of negligence and malpractice. The suit against Dr. Arnold was filed last December by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Wheeler of La Habra. They asked damages for alleged carelessness on the part of the Anaheim dentist in extracting an inflamed wisdom tooth for Mrs. Wheeler on January 14, 1939. They charged Dr. Arnold had made the extraction without first taking an x-ray, that the injection of anesthetic had been made into the inflamed tissue, and that the doctor had failed to administer proper post-operative treatment. As a result, osteomyelitis of the jaw bone set in, it was alleged. Judge West ruled that the evidence introduced in the 14-day trial did not substantiate any of the charges in deciding for the defendant. These local bodies were set up under state authority, with Judge Harry Westover named as the head of it for Orange county. In 15 different communities local people were selected to act, but just what they are to do has not yet entirely developed. The understanding in general is that the local committees were to help promote voluntary enlistment. Whether they also would act as draft registration boards was not clear. Some things that have come out of Washington indicated that they were not to have anything to do with the draft. Some people have thought they would have. However, under any plan of voluntary enlistment there undoubtedly would be some activity required on the part of the county groups. Just how they would proceed is not known. It is expected that Judge Westover will call a second meeting of the county groups within a short time, as soon as instructions from the state adjutant general have been sent along to show what is expected. The Golden Text is from Romans: "If we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it." Among the Scriptural citations in the Lesson-Sermon are these words from Matthew: "And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side. while he sent the multitudes away. And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: . . . But the ship was how in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves; for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid." A passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, states: "Christian Science declares that Mind is substance, also that matter neither feels, suffers, enjoys. Hold these points strongly in view. Keep in mind verity of being—that man is image and likeness of God, whom all being is painless permanent." 300 ACRES OF ENCHANTMENT–50 BUILDINGS LOS ANGELES COUNTY FAIR 40,000 EXHIBITS $200,000 IN PRIZES BRILLIANT SOCIETY HORSE SHOW FIRST 9 NIGHTS "Fair Follies of 1940" FEATURING A GALAXY OF WORLD RENOWNED ARTISTS IN GLAMOROUS PAGEANT Sparkling with sensational new attractions on mammoth stage last eight nights 50 POMONA SEPT. 13-29 IT'S AMERICA'S GREATEST HORSE RACING DAILY WITH PARI-MUTUELS CELLERTON AND SANTA ANA GROUPS IN SUNKIST CITRUS BELT AWARDS of the three Sunkist awards the "citrus belt" service or groups doing the most to influence the consumption of citrus and publicize the industry their respective communities won by Orange county ortions, according to a recent encement by Russell Z.
