In the eyes of the people of Holland, for the transference of their queen and government to London when further defense of the Netherlands in Europe became impossible. Despite attempts of Nazi propagandists to make the situation appear otherwise, the Dutch people regard this withdrawal as recognition of the importance and rights of these parts of the nation which remain free. London, rather than the Dutch East Indies or Dutch Guiana, was chosen as the seat of government in order, presumably, that the political heads of the nation could remain in the closest touch with the Dutch navy, which continues to wage war against Germany, and also with the British government which now represents Holland's only hope for the future in Europe.
Futhermore, headquarters close to Holland aid and encourage those elements which are still resisting the Nazis by passive or even active means in the home country.
OUTPOST OF EUROPE—Closely connected with the plans or military and economic hemisphere defense which were discussed at the Havana Pan-American conference, is another problem which so far seems to have passed almost unnoticed.
The active aim of Pan-American unity is obviously to erect a wall both economically and militarily between this continent and Europe, a wall which would come into play soon. Anaheim’s Streak of Wins Snapped
Athletics Drop Decision to May Company Nine of Los Angeles
It’s a long road that has no turning, even though it’s a good road, and the turning game last Sunday afternoon at La Palma park stadium for Joe Huarte’s Anaheim Athletics. All of which means that the Athletics had their nine-game winning streak snapped by the May company nine of Los Angeles, 8 to 2.
Pitcher Farris was given the starting call by Manager Huarte and ran into trouble immediately. A double, a walk and two errors by Johnny LanFranco at shortstop were turned into a trio of runs and Farris gave way to Jim Glimpse, big left-hander. Glimpse put the fire out for the remainder of the first inning, but proved ineffective in the second stanza. A quartet of singles, a double and a triple chased the Brea-Olinda high school hurler to the showers and brought Huarte to the mound. The manager’s appearance also signalled the end of the merry-go-round for the May company, as they got a lone single during the remainder of the game.
The Athletics got both their runs in the third round, and were aided no end by a fluke double off the bat of Marsden LanFranco. That blow come after Huarte had drawn a walk, and the two runners crossed the plate on a double by Bud McConnell.
The fans seemed to approve of the new canvas covering over the South Coast Music Festival which will be held at Laguna Beach during the month of August, will embrace many coastal and inland cities, as well as Laguna Beach, it has been announced by Robert Hollinshead, impresario.
Opening August 14 with Dr. Albert Coates, noted maestro, conducting and Vladimir Rosing producing the opera “I Pagliacci,” and scenes from “Faust,” the Festival will bring to the southland many notable events. “I Pagliacci” brings east of important names, an orchestra of 45 and chorus of 50.
The second attraction, on August 15 features Walter Mills, one of America’s great baritones; William Farnum, idol of the dramatic world; and Arthur Bergh, composer-pianist, whose works are being featured at the Hollywood Bowl this summer. August 18 brings the Los Angeles Women’s Symphony orchestra of 70 musicians, and the internationally famous violinist Josef Piastro as soloist.
Bowers Museum to Close During Month
The Charles W. Bowers Memorial museum at 20th and Main streets, Santa Ana, will be closed to guests during August, according to Mrs. F. E. Coulter, curator.

OUTPOST OF EUROPE—Closely connected with the plans for military and economic hemisphere defense which were discussed at the Havana Pan-American conference, is another problem which so far seems to have passed almost unnoticed.
The active aim of Pan-American unity is obviously to erect a wall both economically and militarily between this continent and Europe, a wall which would completely insulate America against economic pressure and penetration or armed attack by a power-mad Hitler. But, even if complete success attends the erection of this barrier, even if every American republic enters into the fullest imaginable cooperation, the American continent is still not secure unless definite plans are laid to deal with the future status of those islands in the Atlantic, both North and South, which an aggressor might well use as a ladder to surmount the defenses of the new world.
The Azores group, the islands of Madeira and its dependencies, the Cape Verdes islands, and the Canary islands all belong to either Spain or Portugal. Today Spain is already in the axis camp politically. Tomorrow she may have joined them in military action. Portugal is virtually helpless to defend herself should General Franco decide to unite the entire Iberian peninsula under his rule. In other words, it appears almost certain that the dictators can have the use of all these island groups whenever they want them unless they are thwarted by the action of British naval forces. And the Cape Verde islands, now Portugese, would supply excellent bases only 1400 miles from the coast of Brazil. From these bases all maritime traffic between North and South America in the Atlantic could be indefinitely halted or at least gravely impeded by air and submarine raiders.
It is at least in part with the idea of countering this peril that the establishing of important air and naval bases in Latin America was put forward by Cordell Hull at Havana.
Such bases at the mouth of the Amazon and at the Natal in northeastern Brazil would certainly go a long way toward solving the problem, but only in the same way that powerful bases at points on the Pacific Coast of the United States would protect the sea lanes from Seattle to Valparaiso if Ha-
round for the May company, as they got a lone single during the remainder of the game.

idea of countering this peril that the establishing of important air and naval bases in Latin America was put forward by Cordell Hull at Havana.
Such bases at the mouth of the Amazon and at the Natal in northeastern Brazil would certainly go a long way toward solving the problem, but only in the same way that powerful bases at points on the Pacific Coast of the United States would protect the sea lanes from Seattle to Valparaiso if Hawaii were in enemy hands. In the Pacific this strategy of purely coastal defense was discarded as unsatisfactory. Is it likely to be any more effective in the Atlantic? Ninety percent of the possibility of any European power or combination of powers being able to attack highly vulnerable South America would vanish if some means could be devised permitting the establishment of an impregnable United States or joint Pan-American stronghold in the Cape Verde islands.
Lights Tournament May Change Dates
Future Tournament of Lights parades will be held in August rather than in July if a recommendation passed last Saturday night by the present board of directors is approved by the new board when it organizes tomorrow night.
The change in date was suggested for several reasons having to do with final organization of the tournament parade. It was pointed out that the July date comes too soon after the start of the summer season, which usually gets completely underway with the July 4 holiday. Questions of financing and budget, weather conditions and other considerations also prompted the recommendation.
Anything can happen at the annual Comedians-Leading Men charity baseball spectacle to be held at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles the night of August 8. Nobody, not even Charlie Chan, is quite able to explain how the penguin (above) got on Guinn "Big Boy" Williams' head—least of all Henry Armetta, who discovered it. More than 50 of Hollywood's most famous screen, stage, and radio stars will play in the game. Paulette Goddard and Marlene Dietrich will appear in uniform to captain the teams. Over 100 celebrities will ride in a "parade of the stars" in the pre-game pageant. Tickets at Southern California Music Co., 737 S. Hill, L. A., and at all ticket agencies.

The festival embraces not only Laguna Beach, but Huntington Beach, Newport-Balboa, Whittier, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Dana Point, San Clemente, Occanside and other coastal communities. Prominent citizens in the various communities comprise committees for the festival.

Drowning Claims Two at Newport
Residents of Santa Ana and Beach Community are Victims Sunday
Two men were drowned at Newport-Balboa Sunday, one in the ocean and one in Newport Bay, lifeguards and police reported.
J. W. Orr, 67, of 1037 Custer street, Santa Ana, lost his life when he attempted to launch a small boat through the surf near the Santa Ana river jetty.
Orr, with his son Tom of 1006 Kilson drive and Frank Curren of 706 Hickory street, both in Santa Ana, were nearly through the breakers in the small boat when an oarlock snapped, hurling the craft into the trough of the waves, where it overturned.
The two younger men struggled toward shore after they had seen the elder Orr apparently safe, clinging to an car. As they started out to obtain assistance Orr lost his grip on the oar and sank beneath the surface. Although the harbor patrol boat was called, searchers were unable to recover his body.
George Nelson, 44, of 3502 Marcus street, Newport, was the second victim. Witnesses said he appeared to stumble as he entered the bay for a swim, but then recovered himself and swam for several yards. A few minutes later he was seen floating face downward in the bay.
Fred A. Oelschlagel of Los Angeles swam to his rescue and administered artificial respiration until lifeguards arrived. Despite nearly two hours' work by the

Trailer Haven is Gaining in Favor
Set in a natural bowl covering 49 acres Trailer Haven, located on the Roosevelt highway 1½ miles north of Santa Monica, has attracted scores of trailer vacationists this summer.
While the camp is not new, having been used for a number of years for cabins, this is the first year that it has been devoted exclusively to families in trailers. More than 1000 trees furnish shade.
The bowl is a stone's throw from the ocean and a fine beach, the mecca of uncounted thousands during the hot months. Surf board riders, who have attracted national attention with their antics, say that the beach is as near that of the famous Waikiki as may be found along the ocean borders of the United States mainland. Life guards point out that rollers mean a gradual beach with attendant safety from treacherous rip tides and cross currents.
Billy Allan, the manager, said that new modern showers and rest rooms have been installed, together with a community kitchen for those who do not wish to cook in their trailers. New washing machines have been placed in the laundry room.
The average temperature in the bowl during the summer is 68.
