Saturation Point In Taxes Reached Assembly Committee Reports No Need for Additional Levies for State California has reached the "saturation point" in taxation, the state assembly revenue and taxation committee reported to the state legislature Tuesday, adding that there is no need of any new taxes at this time. The report, result of an investigation during the last ten weeks recess of the legislature, declared the entire economic structure of the state is threatened with "devastating demoralization" if taxes are raised beyond the present point. The legislature should place safeguards around the future spending of state money to insure a ready market for state warrants and to bring about a balanced budget through economy and efficiency in administration of state governmental affairs, continued the report, submitted by the committee chairman, Assemblyman Rodney Turner, Barkesfield. "It is the belief of this committee that the saturation point has been reached and that the imposition of additional taxes would prove disastrous to the well-being of the people as a whole and devastating to the economic security of the state of California," it continued. Increased tax burdens fall directly upon business and business transactions and said the legislature. Riley Announces HARRY D. RILEY (Political Announcement) Submitting his official record for the past three and one half years to support his appeal to the voters, Harry D. Riley today announced his candidacy to succeed himself as supervisor of the Third Supervisorial district. "I campaigned four years ago on but one promise. I pledged that if I were elected the office would be conducted in a friendly courteous and business-like manner, and that promise has been filled," Riley said. He lays claims to other achievements, however, as reasons he believes he has won the right to another four years in office. Among these he lists his successful efforts to gain flood control; his determination which brought about repair of the Santa Ana River; his support at Newport Harbor To Dedicate Pier Newport Beach will dedicate its new 1100-foot ocean pier on June 9, it was announced this week by O. M. Campbell, chairman of the Business Men's association committee. The formal dedication program is set for 2 o'clock, when an admiral of the United States navy will declare the pier open. The dedication will also be the occasion for a big free fish fry dinner. The committee will begin serving at 11 o'clock and will continue to serve as long as necessary. The affair is being arranged by the Business Men's association of Newport Beach. Church Services WESLEY METHODIST Rev. G. Carroll Rector will speak on the subject, "The Development and Control of Power" at the morning service at 11 o'clock. During the evening service at 7:30 o'clock, his topic will be, "The Recovery of Losses." A short session of the church conference will be held following the Sunday morning service. WHITE TEMPLE METHODIST Memorial Day services will be held Sunday morning at 9:30 o'clock. Rev. R. Kells Swenerton will preach on the subject, "Why Doesn't God Stop the War?" The choir, directed by Miss Betty Fackiner, will sing "Finale from the Song of Man" with bass solos by Dr. C. O. Patterson and Fred "It is the belief of this committee that the saturation point has been reached and that the imposition of additional taxes would prove disastrous to the well-being of the people as a whole and devastating to the economic security of the state of California," it continued. Increased tax burdens fall directly upon business and business transactions and, said the legislators, "If business and industry are to be encouraged to expand and provide more employment, too great a share of the fruits of industry must not be taken through taxation. "This committee is of the firm opinion that unemployed cannot be permanently reduced until industry is encouraged to provide more jobs," the report stated. "As industry expands and provides more jobs, under the stimulus of more moderate taxation, the urge for additional taxes to finance relief as well as unemployment insurance, will be lessened and the slate budget automatically will be brought into balance." Motorcyclists Will Compete on June 9 Once again champion motorcyclists from southern California will challenge the dangers of "Death Dip" on the Orange county Motorcycle club race track as officials announced the coming Tourist Trophy races to be held June 9 on the Coast highway course. Special attraction of the event will be the addition of a novice race for all riders who have never won prize money in any previous race in addition to the four regular races. Already more than 30 riders have indicated that they will compete and it is expected that the total entries will be approximaely 50 before the races start. "Already the federal government has returned $650,000 to the county as a result of a resolution I assisted in forming while on the advisory board of the National Rivers and Harbors congress," Riley said. "It has been my privilege to assist in bringing about flood-control construction work on Coyote, Brea and Fullerton creeks, on the Santa Ana river, and an engineering study of Carbon creek. This work is all well under way." For the coming several years the county will be engaged in completing vital construction projects now under contract, or planned. This work will need the services of experienced, seasoned men on the board of supervisors to avoid mistakes and needless expense. Riley believes, and he contends his experience gained during the years he has been on the board is a valuable asset to his district and county. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH The verse from the Psalms, "My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God," is the Golden Text in the Lesson-Sermon on "Soul and Body" on Sunday in all Churches of Christ, Scientist. Among the Bible citations are these words of Jesus from Matthew: "Therefore I say unto you Take no thought for your life what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body what ye shall put on. Is not tha life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowl of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather int barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? . . . And wha take ye thought for raiment Consider the lilies of the field how they grow; they tool no neither do they spin: And yet you say unto you That even Solomon in all his glory was not arraye like one of these. . . Therefore take no thought, saying What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or wherewithal shall we be clothed? . . . for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things." A passage from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy presents the statement: "When understanding changes the stand points of life and intelligence from a material to a spiritual basis we shall gain the reality Of Life control of Soul over sense, an we shall percieve Christianity, or Truth, in its divine Principle."
