METHODS OF REDUCING UNIT COST OF CITRUS PRODUCTION REVEALED The possibility of increasing per acre yield of citrus fruits in California, and thereby lowering the unit cost of production, by a determined study of the need by trees of certain minor elements of plant food is described by A. L. Chandler, assistant manager of the field department of the Mutual Orange Distributors, in an article appearing in the May issue of CITRUS LEAVES. Chandler recently returned from a survey of Florida citricultural practices and remarked that anyone who had visited that state several years ago would be surprised today by the progress that has been made in plant feeding practices. Some of the trees look much better than they did years ago and the production per tree is much heavier. "We have found in recent years that there are several plant food elements, namely copper, zinc, magnesium, boron, manganese and iron, which may be required by plants in very small amounts but may be deficient in some of our soils," says Chandler. "These have been called minor, or rare, elements because they play a minor part in plant nutrition. In case they are lacking or deficient, these elements become very important since plants need them just as they do the big three nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and potash—although in minute quantities. "The best illustration in California of the use of minor elements is the correction of mottle-leaf, or little-leaf, of citrus trees by spraying the foliage with zinc compounds. It is my belief that the use of zinc compounds in Tulare county orchards alone has increased their orange crops as much as 30 per cent. "Florida experimenters have found zinc, copper, magnesium, and manganese necessary for normal growth of citrus in most of their planted areas. The average citrus soil in that state is a fine sand, naturally low in plant foods. Heavy rainfall rapidly leaches out fertilizers. "One of the most important of these deficiency symptoms in Florida is a lack of magnesium. Magnesium is really not a minor element because its use by the tree is about one-tenth the amount of the ntirogen requirement. The theory advanced is that maturing fruit brings an acute shortage of magnesium and it is withdrawn from the leaves which turn yellow and drop. Because seeds apparently require rather large amounts of magnesium, the seeded varieties of citrus fruits suffer more than the seedless. "Because magnesium is needed in large amounts, it is not possible to rehabilitate those suffering residual parallels following poliomyelitis started day in Orange county under Orange county chapter of National Foundation for Infant Paralysis, Inc., Mrs. W. T. Kirv chairman of the chapter." Tourist Arrivals Show Large Gain A 10.8 per cent gain in motor arrivals in southern California so far during 1940 was revealed today by the All-Year club. Between Jan. 1 and April 1 a total of 218,948 pleasure-seekers motored into California, according to the southland's community tourist organization. This compared with 198,641 for the first three months of 1939. It was a gain of 10.2 per cent. A. L. Weil, member of the All-Year club management committee, said most of these will find their way into the southland before going home. But many came here direct—140,151. This compared with 126,454 in 1939. It was a gain of 10.8 per cent, greater than the gain for California as a whole. Northern California's gain was 9.2 per cent. Significantly, Weil said, each month of 1940 has been better than the one before. The gain in January compared with 1939 was 7.5 per cent. February was 12.3 per cent. And March was 13.7 per cent. "This is for motor arrivals alone," he said. "The arrivals by train, bus, air and boat have not been totalled. But it indicates a substantial improvement." Weil said an indication of the coming summer season is seen in the flood of inquiries received by the All-Year club. Three days' mail brought 1562, 1003 and 1272 letters. Many of them told of plans to come here and live upon retirement. Farm Bureau Choir To Present Concert The annual spring concert by the Orange County Farm Bureau chorus will be held next Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock in the First Methodist church of Fullerton. Monroe Sharpless is director of the chorus. Vocal soloists during the program will include Lyman Harper of Anaheim, Mrs. W. Jackson Scott of Fullerton and Sharpless; Assisting the chorus will be a string ensemble, Miss Evelyn Bauman of Anaheim, violinist, and Miss Regina Walberg of Santa "We have ample information on leaf symptoms of some of these troubles in California. We have worked out the use of zinc sprays for mottle-leaf. We have evidence of copper deficiency and find it responds quickly to cooper sprays. We have symptoms of manganese deficiency wide-spread over the citrus district and have numerous trials of manganese sprays under way. We also have some evidence of the leaf symptoms which Florida men call magnesium deficiency which is being investigated. There is some evidence of iron deficiency. Our basic problem is somewhat different from that in Florida because our soil is radically differed because its use by the tree is about one-tenth the amount of the nitrogen requirement. The theory advanced is that maturing fruit brings an acute shortage of magnesium and it is withdrawn from the leaves which turn yellow and drop. Because seeds apparently require rather large amounts of magnesium, the seeded varieties of citrus fruits suffer more than the seedless. "Because magnesium is needed in large amounts, it is not possible to correct its lack by spraying the tree with magnesium sulphate. It is necessary to supply it to the soil in the form of a carbonate or sulphate. have been known in Florida longer than the others and have been called 'die-back' or 'ammonia-tion.' We know it here as 'exanthema'. Since copper is truly a minor element, a spray of copper sulphate and lime quickly snaps the tree out of its difficulty. Soil treatment with a couple of pounds of copper sulphate to the tree are also suitable where spray is not desired. "A lack of zinc, called 'frenching' exists in Florida soils and its effect is similar to the mottled leaf of California citrus. Like copper, zinc is needed in small quantities and is easy to correct by sprays of zinc sulphate neutralized with lime. Manganese is not to be confused with magnesium. Although the name is similar it has a separate and distinct role in tree feeding. It is not required in quantity but the effect-of its lack is similar to zinc deficiency and they are commonly found in the same groves. Like zinc treatments, spraying with manganese sluphate is quickly effective on the foliage. "How does this affect California citrus growing? "We have ample information on leaf symptoms of some of these troubles in California. There is some evidence of iron deficiency." A new venture in rehabilitation those suffering residual paralysis following poliomyelitis started last day in Orange county under National Foundation for Infant Paralysis, Inc., Mrs. W. T. Kirv chairman of the chapter, nounced. Miss Heien Paull, physiotherapist, began full time work as employee of the chapter among patients needing care. Orange the only county to use the fund raised in the March of Dime that manner. Money for this was raised in 1939 and the 1940 March of Dime In 1939 the county raised more than had been raised in previous four years of celebration for the president's birth and in 1940 the total obtained the county was $2594.66, having which is retained in the Nation from which grants are made research, care in epidemics, establishment of hospitals, and causes pertinent to infantile paralysis research and treatment. Miss Paull comes highly recommended with a background scientific training, and holds ceptable credentials. She bachelor of science from University of Wisconsin, and worked for the past several years in part time private practice also has been affiliated with orthopedic hospital where she been checking muscles in myelitis cases under a grant from National Foundation. According to a survey by the Orange county chapter there have been 213 cases poliomyelitis in the county since 1929. Of these, 82 suffered residual paralysis; three have pired; 40 have moved away are having some care and more; 28 have urgent need physiotherapy, appliances, portation, rehabilitation, and are nurses at the Orange county hospital, under supervision covered. Headquarters for the work be in the health department the county, and Miss Paull's gram will be coordinated with work done in the county here and under the crippled child act by the health department Infantile paralysis cases in the Orange County Farm Bureau chorus will be held next Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock in the First Methodist church of Fullerton.
