AVERAGE CURRENT EXPENDITURE FOR ANAHEIM HIGH SCHOOL TOLD
The Anaheim union high school district spent an average of $188.94 for current expenditures only during 1938-39 for each of the 1,060 high school pupils in average daily attendance in the district, according to a study of expenditures of the larger high school districts of California, just made public by California Taxpayers' association. Of the $188.94 current expenditure per pupil, $102.93 went for teacher salaries and $86.01 for other current expenditures, the association found.
The study showed that the average current expenditure per pupil in 1938-39 for districts of similar size and teaching the same grades was $154.36. Midpoint expenditure for teacher salaries by this same group of districts was $98.34, while for other current purposes it was $54.24. This means that half of the districts in this group spent more than these amounts for each of these items and half of them spent less.
In 1937-38, the association found, the Anaheim union high school district spent an average of $193.53 for current expenditures for each of the 1,103 pupils in average daily attendance in the district. Of this, $103.03 went for teacher salaries and $90.50 for other current expenditures. The data are based on preaudit figures made available by the state department of education and do not include expenditures for capital outlays or debt payment, the association pointed out.
"Find out about your schools," says the Taxpayers' association, urging that citizens take an active interest in what the public schools are doing and how much the activities of the schools cost. Throughout the state, two-thirds of the current expenditure of the schools goes for teacher salaries—which is directly related to the number of pupils per teacher and the salaries paid teachers. Tied in specifically to the high school level, this means: How many classes does each teacher teach? How many pupils are there in each class? How many pupil contacts must each teacher make each week?
And, says the Taxpayers' association, with one-third of the current expenditures of school districts America and sought to replace our God-given Constitution with foreign ideologies, Loudon declared.
LOTUS H. LOUDON
Pledging himself to a program based firmly upon the principles of "America for Americans" Lotus H. Loudon, Anaheim publisher, today announced his candidacy for the Republican party nomination for congressman from the 19th district.
"This program would clear from our statutes the laws inspired from Moscow and passed upon our people during the past seven years," Loudon said. "These laws have been regimenting a free people under an oppressive collective system. They have robbed our people of liberty and progressive initiative."
Industry, agriculture, business, labor and the individual all have suffered ruinously because those in power did not understand America and sought to replace our God-given Constitution with foreign ideologies, Loudon declared.

Negligence on the part of both Yasutaro Aihara, 65, of Talbert and Tommy Inomoto, 24, of R. D. 3, Santa Ana, was found by a coroner's jury to have been responsible for the automobile collision Tuesday which cost the life of Aihara. The inquest was held Friday.
A second inquest, conducted Saturday morning, found that excessive speed of the car of Leonard O. Winder, 19, of R. D. 4, Santa Ana, was responsible for crash which resulted in Winder's death Wednesday. The machine hit a Garden Grove union high school bus. While Winder owned the car, it was not definitely determined whether he or his companion, Chester Woods, 24, was the driver.

NOTICE IS HEREY GIVEN that on Friday May 17th, 1940, at the hour of ten o'clock a.m. at the steps of the South entrance to the Court House in the City of Santa Ana, County of Orange, State of California, the undersigned, as Trustees, under that certain Deed of Trust, executed by BEN ADDIS CALLAWAY and EDYTH B. CALLAWAY, husband and wife, to WM. STARK and WM. FALKENSTEIN, as Trustees for Anaheim Building and Loan Association, a corporation, as Beneficiary, under which Deed of Trust, CLAYTON L. ALLEN and ELDON W. STARK, have been heretofore duly substituted as Trustees in place and stead of said WM. STARK and WM. FALKENSTEIN, which said Deed of Trust was dated May 31, 1928, recorded June 14th, 1928, in Volume 175 of Official Records, page 9 records of Orange County, California, to which reference is hereby made for further particulars, and said Deed of Trust was assigned by Anaheim Building and Loan Association on NOVEMBER 9th, 1936, to GOLDA ZAUSS, said assignment recorded January 18th, 1940, in Book 1022, page 559 of Official Records of Orange County, California, and assigned by GOLDA ZAUSS on November 27th, 1939, to ROSE RUDOLPH, recorded January 18th, 1940, in Book 1029 page 6 of Official Records of Orange County, California, and pursuant to that certain Notice of Breach of said obligation and schools goes for teacher salaries which is directly related to the number of pupils per teacher and the salaries paid teachers. Tied in specifically to the high school level, this means: How many classes does each teacher teach? How many pupils are there in each class? How many pupil contacts must each teacher make each week?
And says the Taxpayers' association, with one-third of the current expenditures of school districts going for non-teaching costs, close attention should also be given to the expenditures which go to make up such costs. Included are costs for transportation, supplies, janitors, gardeners, and many other items which are included in the non-teaching costs of public schools.
School budgets are currently being made up, the association said, pointing out that increases or decreases in school spending are reflected directly in the local tax rate for schools levied on property and declaring that attention by taxpayers to the costs of their public schools should result in a reduction in their school tax rate for next year.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH
"Adam and Fallen Man" is the subject of the Lesson-Serman on Sunday in all Churches of Christ, Scientist. This verse from John, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit," constitutes the Golden Text.
One of the Bible citations includes these passages about Jesus from Mark: "And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet. And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: . . . And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? The damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, . . . he took the damsel by the hand and said unto her,
Loudon said. "These laws have been regimenting a free people under an oppressive collective system. They have robbed our people of liberty and progressive initiative."
Industry, agriculture, business, labor and the individual all have suffered ruinously because those in power did not understand America and sought to replace our God-given Constitution with foreign idealogies, Loudon declared.
"The citizen must assume personal responsibility in restoration of American ideals of thrift and enterprise in the nation's life and business," the candidate asserted.
"We have passed through years in which these ideals have been trampled down. The idea of thrift has been crushed; the thought of personal enterprise has been laughed to shame. Yet there are no factors more vital to our welfare than these. The nation during those unfortunate years has existed solely upon the fruits of the thrift of more sane years. This cannot continue."
This nation's security and happiness depends upon preservation of a proper economic balance; the candidate believes. Other nations falling to keep such balance have grasped at war for a prop to keep from falling.
"We need not fear war in this country if we keep these facts in mind," the candidate said. "Failure to maintain a proper balance is a certain invitation for war.
Loudon was a candidate at the 1938 grass roots convention at Riverside. He is well known in the district as a result of that campaign. He served as president of the Economic Council of Southern California and has been a member of the board of directors and paroles of the California Institution for Women at Tehachapi for seven years."—Pol. Included in the Lesson-Sermon are these statements from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "A demonstration of the facts of Soul in Jesus' way resolves the dark visions of material sense into harmony and immortality. To divest thought of false trusts and material evidences in order that the spiritual facts of being many appear—this is the great attainment by means of which we shall sweep away the false and give place to the true."

Schools to Open Later Next Fall
Orange county high schools will open the fall semester from one to two weeks later next September than they did last fall, it has been announced by County Superintendent of Schools Ray Adkinson. September 16 has been set for the opening of inland schools, while most of those along the coast line will open on September 23.
The school calendars were revised through efforts of chamber of commerce workers with the view in mind of allowing more time for late summer business and vacation activities. As the result of the change in opening dates, schools will remain in session a week or two longer in June, it was said.
Christmas vacation will be held between December 21 and January 5 and Easter vacation between April 5 and 13, Adkinson said.
