Tuberculosis Held Problem of Youth
Control of Disease is Vital to Young People, School Executive Declares
The control of tuberculosis as youth's particular problem was emphasized today by Ray Adkinson, Orange county superintendent of schools. He expressed the interest and willingness of the teachers and the pupils to cooperate in the Early Diagnosis Campaign, being held throughout April by the Orange County Tuberculosis & Health association.
"Every student should face the fact that tuberculosis is the chief enemy of young adults," said Adkinson. "The heaviest toll of lives taken by any disease during the years between 15 and 45 is taken by tuberculosis. These are the years spent in school and the productive years prepared for by the school period.
"Yet authorities tell us that it is possible, with strongly concerted efforts to control tuberculosis in this country during the next few decades. Hence, tuberculosis is not only the present school generation's particular enemy, but it will depend largely upon those in school today as to whether or not the disease is controlled within time limits now possible.
"In Orange county, we may well congratulate ourselves that we have intelligence to include tuberculin testing and chest X-raying in the physical examination of many of our students and teachers. These are imperative measures for the diagnosis and the control of tuberculosis advocated by the campaign and there are hopeful signs that in the future more stud..."
May 1 Closing Date On Important Form
May is one of the most important dates for the 1940 AAA program, advises Albert S. Walker, chairman of the Orange county Agricultural Conservation committee.
Walker urged all farmers to be sure they have in mind three steps in connection with this year's program which must be taken before this closing date if they are to receive benefits of the program.
The first step is the filing of the farm plan and estimate sheet. This should be done by May 1 or the date on which a 1940 parity adjustment application is submitted, whichever is earlier.
The second step is the filing in the county office of a request for participation in the range program.
May 1 is also the final date for acceptance or requests for combinations of farms and execution of combination-farm share agreements.
All farmers desiring information about the filling out and filing of these forms should get in touch with the county agricultural conservation office as soon as possible.

Additional Taxes Held Unnecessary
Garland, Assembly Speaker, Expresses Opinion on State Taxation
Additional taxes will be unnecessary when the special session of the legislature reconvenes May 13, said Gordon H. Garland, speaker of the state assembly, this week.
Speaker Garland based his statement on results to date of hearings by the assembly interim committees on governmental economy and efficiency and revenue and taxation which resumed public hearings in San Francisco the first of this week.
“Facts brought out by these committees definitely show that no new revenue tax measures will be necessary during the special session,” he said. “These facts show efficiency in state government will avoid necessity for new revenue measures prior to the 1941 regular session of the legislature, if then.”
Garland pointed out that Assemblyman Don Allen, chairman of the governmental economy and efficiency committee, reported savings of from $8,000,000 to $10,-000,000 a year can be effected in various departments of state government.
Chairman Allen said that through consolidation of various governmental agencies, pooling of state automobiles, supervision of telephone, telegraph costs now running as high as $24,000 a month, and a centralized state auditing bureau with an executive directly responsible to the people, these savings can be offset.
AGGRESSIVE CAMPAIGN TO SELL CALIFORNIA ORANGES ARRANGED
An aggressive campaign to sell the 1940 valencia orange crop was started last week when the California Fruit Growers Exchange directors voted to increase the valencia advertising assessment to seven cents per box.
This means a valencia advertising fund of approximately a million dollars, a record investment by the Sunkist organization toward increasing consumer demand for California summer oranges.
More than one-fourth of the budget will be spent on newspaper advertising in the consumer areas throughout the United States and Canada. Magazine, radio and outdoor advertising will also be used, together with trade papers in the fresh fruit and soda fountain fields.
During the valencia season the cooperative’s dealer service force will be increased to 51 experienced men.
This includes 25 extra men who will work exclusively on valencia sales promotion among the retailers. They will be assigned primarily to coverage of small cities and towns which could not serviced effectively by the regular Sunkist dealer service staff. Consumer advertising in newspapers and farm publications will reach small markets more intensively than ever before.
Consensus of opinion among the directors at the board meeting was that the 1940 valencia season presents a marketing opportunity that may not occur again in many years to bring greater returns to the California growers through additional investment in advertising.
Absence of Florida competition during the valencia season, a good run of valencia sizes and exceptional fruit quality were cited as factors which should justify the increased advertising effort.
“If the valencia crop is marketed to provide the greatest possible per acre return to growers, it will be the fault of the industry,” declared Paul Armstrong, Sunkist general manager. “Our advertising program will increase consumer demand and the industry now has
