These Files Contain the Only Authentic History in Print of the Daily Doings of the Citizens of Anaheim and Orange County in the Days of the Pioneers. 50 Years Ago April 10, 1890 On Tuesday the Olive Mill was formally opened. Many representative people were present to witness the startup. The property was turned over to the stockholders by the builders. The visitors saw wheat turned into neatly done up sacks of flour. Had a splendid lunch and retreat home wishing the mill all manner of success. Among the visitors from Anaheim were Messrs. L. Schorn (President of the Milling company), Theo. Reiser, Max Nebelung, Dr. Gardiner, H. C. Kellogg, W. H. Mitchell, Chas. Schindler, R. Peterson. The news per fraternity were represented by Bros. Broadbere and F. Gess of the Santa Ana Free Press; Fullerton of the Orange News and the Gazette man. Yesterday was a lovely day. The streets hadn't been sprinkled for several weeks—not since the last rain—and a delightful "Santa Ana" blew real estate down town so thick that one could cut it with a dull knife. The dust was so bad that everybody shut up shop and swore because the streets weren't sprinkled and the wind blew so like the furies. A ride through Placentia avenue is to be enjoyed at this season of the year. Passing by residences and charming villas that dot the thoroughfare one detects the scent 25 Years Ago April 8, 1915 At the meeting of the city trustees held on Thursday evening City Electrician E. H. Adams was instructed to furnish data as to the cost of putting juice upon the switchboard at the powerhouse under the municipal ownership regime. Representatives of the Edison company claim that they can furnish juice at the city switchboard for a sum $400 less per month than the present cost to the city. The city council wishes to ascertain positively if there is such a disparity between the cost now entailed by the city and the figure given by the Edison people. The matter of putting in a pipe line instead of the open irrigation ditch on West street was referred to the committee on public improvements. Complaint was made about the open ditch on West Lincoln avenue. The overflow of irrigation water here makes a nasty mess and neighboring property owners are anxious to have a cement pipe put in. The matter will be taken up with the Water company. Insurance upon two span of horses was ordered and a warrant for $40 was drawn in payment of same. The matter of putting down sidewalks and curbing at the corner of Chestnut and Palm and also on the corner of Bush and Center street was discussed. Passing by residences and chaining villas that dot the thoroughfare one detects the scent of orange blossoms wafted from the trees. The orchards are all kept in neatest trim and are now laden with myriads of white blossoms that contrast strongly with the deep green foliage of the trees and the golden fruit which in many cases is still permitted to hang. The pink tint of the peach and apricot blossoms is also to be seen in profusion and the surrounding country is covered with rich grass that rivals a springtime clover field. Placentia is one of the most lovely places in southern California, and the residents have a pardonable pride in the beauty of their main thoroughfare, lined here and there as it is with tall hedges to wavy poplar, cypress and maple trees, green these days in their springtime luxurience. Oscar Luedke advertises the largest stock of baseball bats ever handled by a retailer in southern California. He has also a splendid stock of baseballs which are going at low rates. Oscar is quite a baseball enthusiast, is secretary of the Anaheim baseball club and guarantees to give satisfaction with his goods. L. F. Lewis and family who have resided in Los Angeles for a couple of years past, will return to Anaheim to reside permanently the latter part of this week. Their residence on Center street will be moved back several feet from its present location. C. E. Groat has commenced building a residence for Mr. Botsford on the Northam ranch in Placentia. Mr. Groat has his card in another column this morning, and solicits a ree of the public patronag. The Board of Directors of the irrigation district met on Monday and canvassed the returns of last week's election. F. A. Korn, G. G. Greeley, Thos. Fuenger, Wm. Crowther and P. Ba were declared elected as new Board of The matter of putting down sidewalks and curbing at the corner of Chestnut and Palm and also on the corner of Bush and Center street was discussed. The city clerk was instructed to notify property owners who have failed to put in these improvements that should they still fail to act, the city will then put in the sidewalks as provided under the Vrooman act. The cost will then be more than if done under private contract. There were present at the meeting Trustees Cook, Stark, Hamler, Schneider and Brunworth. The Ebell society held its regular primary election last Saturday which resulted in the following ladies being elected to their respective offices for the coming year inasmuch as they received a majority of the votes cast: President, Mrs. Terry; Recording secretary, Mrs. Abbey; Curator, Mrs. Gifford; Librarian, Mrs. Angell. Following are the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes. They will be voted on at the next regular meeting; First vice president, Mrs. Boyd, Mrs. Ahlborn; Second vice president, Mrs. Gates, Mrs. Champion; Cor. Sec., Miss Parker, Miss Sidnam; Treas., Mrs. Coons, Miss Raymond; Directors, Miss Rae, Mrs. Grimshaw, Mrs. Pearson, Mrs. Dutton. Mrs. Grim was elected delegate and Mrs. Olga Beebe alternate to the state convention at San Francisco in May. Cutting down the front of the Odd Fellow's building is now in progress. The fronts of the Wallop & Champion store, Schneider Brothers' Meat Market and the Coliseum pool hall have been set back eight feet. When Buck Beebe left for the state university a year ago he evidently took his legs with him. In a meet between the U.S.C. and the California freshmen at Berkeley, last Wednesday Beebe won both the mile and half mile races with ease, Syril Tipton was his opponent in the half mile. U.S.C. Whittier Amateur Night is Plan for the Whittier Amateur Night, to be held April 24th formulated by a committee the Veterans of Foreign War in Whittier, sponsors of the program will be held a new Whittier high school torium. Twenty-five amateur nets will compete for prizes will be either cash awards appearance on the radio. Sand of San Francisco, uncle of Frank Ey, is visiting the latter at his residence in this city. Mr. Sand expects to remain in town until he sees better weather than we had yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Mowry of San Francisco are sojourning in Anaheim for a few days, the guests of Dr. and Mrs. W. N. Hardin. Mr. Mowry is engaged in a legal case in Los Angeles and expects to return to the metropolis with his wife on Monday next. J. K. Fifteen Persons Hurt in Mishaps No Severe Injuries Reported As Result of Series of Weekend Crashes Fifteen persons were injured in automobile accidents throughout the county last week end, a compilation of reports to city and county officials reveals. Friddle and Lillard were injured Sunday morning when cars driven by Friddle and C. B. Tillotson, 44, of Colton collided at the intersection of Cypress and Edinger streets, Santa Ana. The O'Brien girl was slightly hurt when she ran in front of a car driven by R. W. McKnight, 64, Santa Ana, near the intersection. A colorful carpet of wild flowers which in some regions is the most beautiful in more than a decade is southern California's "harvest" from the warmest winter in history plus bountiful rains, the All-Year club reported today. Death Valley is covered with its most beautiful "rug" in 15 years, and in other regions of the southland thousands of acres of fields and wasteland are sprinkled with pinks, golds, and blues, according to a survey by the community's official tourist organization. This, according to the All-Year club, has proved an unusual tourist attraction. Through the All-Year free Visitors Bureau at 505 W. 6th street in Los Angeles, thousands of the visitors are being directed to the wild flower areas. "Death Valley will continue to be a vivid carpet for another three to five weeks," reported Ruthe Keane, director of the tors' Bureau. "Desert sun make up the main carpet; ing the valley with the sun you, the valley is gold. Sun ahead, it is green. The follow the sun. "Out on the Mojave there is a yellow blaze of dandelion as well as desert posa, buttercups, desert and brilliant patches of paint brush and scarlet loom." Whittier Amateur Night is Planned Plans for the Whittier Amateur Night, to be held April 26, are simulated by a committee from the Veterans of Foreign Wars post Whittier, sponsors of the event. The program will be held in the New Whittier high school auditorium. Twenty-five amateur numbers will compete for prizes which will be either cash awards or an appearance on the radio. Eight of the numbers are for children 12 years of age or under, and the remainder will be of contestants more than 12 years of age. Entries should be mailed to the Whittier News, giving age, the number of persons in the act and something regarding the act itself. Entries are already in from Anaheim, Bell, Corona, Elsinore and Whittier. Entries close April 5. McKnight, 64, Santa Ana, near the intersection of Third and Main streets in Santa Ana. Slight cuts about the face were suffered by Brenda Beebe when the car in which she was riding with Roy S. Beebe collided with another driven by W. H. Carter 60, of Santa Ana. The crash occurred on Main street between Sixth and Seventh streets, Santa Ana, Sunday morning. Vidosh and Grimm were injured in another Santa Ana accident Saturday afternoon, when cars they were driving collided at the intersection of Broadway and Walnut street. Mrs. Davis, her son, the Blodgett boy and Miss McIntosh all were injured Sunday night in an accident at the intersection of Wright street and Winterburg road. Cars involved in the collision were operated by James R. Heyden, 23, of Long Beach, and William C. Blodgett, sr., 44, of R. D. 4, Santa Ana. Dense fog was blamed for an accident at Los Alamitos street and Garden Grove road early Sunday morning in which Burt, Miss Howard and Miss Cushing were hurt. Holtz was injured when the automobile in which he was riding with Robert L. Lipps, 20, of Orange failed to make a curve on County Park road five miles east of Orange and overturned. Smith, 24, both of Los Angeles, are serving sentences in the county jail of 30 days each and Earl Kelly, operator of the carnival which employed Manning and Smith is under a six-months' suspended sentence as the results of a raid conducted on the carnival at Garden Grove last Friday night. Manning and Smith each pleaded guilty to gambling charges before Justice of the Peace Charles Kuchel last Saturday and were given 60-day sentences, with half of the term being suspended.
