Formation of Bands at Beach is Sought Plans are now being worked out for the organization of three school bands at Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, with T. D. Collins active in the work. Collins hopes to form bands in the Costa Mesa grammar school, the Newport grammar school and Newport Harbor union high school. Each year drama students at the high school and college present a Christmas play free to the public, this year's production being one of a cycle of four plays. A cast of 150 students will take part in "Why the Chimes Rang", with actors and musicians portraying two scenes—the first in a peasant's hut and the finale at the cathedral on Christmas Eve. CAMPBELL Resident Director Phone 2209 251 North Lemon Street Anaheim, California THE POCKETBOOK KNOWLEDGE BY TOPPS Charts Aid War On Roads Deaths Highway Patrol Maps Record Extensive Information On Auto Accidents Causes, types and locations of automobile accidents in Orange county are being extensively charted by the state highway patrol in an effort to curb mishaps, according to Captain H. C. Meehan, head of the Orange county unit of the patrol. Already the charts reveal that main causes of accidents are right of way violations, speeding, and drunk driving, respectively. They reveal that 56 accidents occurred on county highways during November, in which four persons were killed and 38 others injured. In addition to actual accidents, the charts keep a record of warnings given by patrolmen to drivers and of arrests made. Also included is data concerning the hour, day or week, and whether the driver involved is a resident of Orange county or some other county or state. A total of 344 arrests were made during November and 287 other drivers were given warnings, the charts show. Records of the cause of accidents have been kept for September, October and November. Violations of rights-of-way were responsible for 44 accidents during that period, with speed the cause of 40 mishaps. Twenty-two accidents were caused by drunk driving. With these records, the department is able to place added emphasis on patrol work in districts applications for naval reserve flight training are being continuously accepted at the naval reserve aviation base, Long Beach where primary flight classes are now starting the 15th of each month. For this duty he is granted the full pay and allowances of his rank, which is in excess of $20 per month. Upon completion of this period of active service the reservist free to return to civilian life maintaining his commission in the reserve corps where he may maintain his flying proficiency at one of the various naval reserve aviation bases located throughout the nation. Through his naval aviation Rose Parade Route Longer Than Before The route of the Tournament of Roses parade on New Years day in Pasadena will be six miles in length, or 1.8 miles longer than in previous years, states the National Automobile club. Beginning at Ellis street and Orange Grove avenue, the route will extend north on Orange Grove to the flagpole at Colorado street, thence east to Sierra Medre boulevard, south to San Paseual, west to Hill avenue, and south to California street, where it will again turn west to Tournament Park and disband. Many grandstands along the route of parade are already built and choice seats are now being sold. Rites Are Held for Avocado Developer Funeral services for Edwin G. Hart, 64, of La Habra, who was killed in a traffic accident in Los Angeles Wednesday, were conducted Saturday morning at Whittier. Hart was a developer of La Habra Heights and other subdivisions, and also was one of the earliest developers of the avocado industry in southern California. Oil Company Loses Zone Case Appeal The appeal of the Bartholomae Oil company from a decision by the late Superior Judge Homer G. Ames which permitted Dr. Howard W. Seager of Balboa Island to build a house set back only one foot from the front property line was denied late last week by the fourth district court of appeals. The Bartholomae company, owned of adjoining property on Balboa Island, fronting South Bay, objected when Dr. Seager, who was secretary of Newport Beach planning commission, obtained a variance permit, authorizing the one-foot setback, instead of the 10-foot setback provided by city ordinance.
