IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Extracts From Files of The Gazette Issued Half a Century and a Quarter of a Century Ago. These Files Contain the Only Authentic History in Print of the Daily Doings of the Citizens of Anaheim and Orange County in the Days of the Pioneers. 50 Years Ago December 10; 1889 The heavy rains of the recent storm brought down such a volume of water in the river that an overflow resulted, and on Monday it was believed that serious results would follow in consequence. The water flowed in torrents to the east of town and came down as near as the old Olinda railroad grade where it flowed down as far as Mr. Reiser's place and for a time threatened serious damage. A woman and her children living near the Santa Fe crossing on South street reported as having had a narrow escape from crowning a Monday. By the prompt assistance of a gang of section men, who were fortunately working near by, the family was saved. On Tuesday morning Dr. Cardiner and Louis Schorn proceeded to the Olive bridge and in returning to town merely escaped with their team and possibly their lives. The horses plunged into a mud hole ten feet deep, and the Doctor in attempting to cut the traces to free the animals, was himself plunged into the mire, and it was some minutes before a safe landing was made. While at the bridge the water in the river flowed by in such torrents that the approach to the bridge was almost washed away. To repair the damage will necessitate many days of labor and the expenditure of a considerable sum of money. 25 Years Ago December 10, 1914 It is many years since the question of a public park was first agitated in Anaheim and the longer the matter of securing a suitable site was delayed the more difficult that problem became because of the phenomenal increase in land values. But the advocates of a park have never relinquished hope of some day securing this much needed imment, and it now appears that these hopes may be realized. The proposition submitted to certain businessmen of Anaheim Saturday by H. Deutsch places the matter within easy reach. Mr. Deutsch offers a tract admirably situated for the purpose, at reasonable figure, and will donate $5,000 toward its purchase, provided it is used for park purposes. Mr. Deutsch is not a resident of Anaheim, but has been an extensive property owner for a third of a century. He is now 81 years old and would like to do something for the city while he can appreciate the improvement. The site offered is a portion of the Deutsch tract on Lemon street, and being close in the most suitable vacant ground in the city for the purpose. The block is bounded by Lemont Charteres Clementine and Cypress. The market price of the tract is $16,000, but it will cost the city only $11,000. Economist Say Bread Importance The constant desire of everyone to maintain proper weight and abundant vitality for work and play, focuses attention on the importance of certain foods in daily diet. There is no single food which vital in building all-around good health as good bread. The bread recommended by home economists is one which contains the maximum of health-building elements is properly baked and is more easily digested. One of the outstanding features of Weber's bread is the large amount of milk used in baking. This loaf gives added health-building elements yet is not fattening in itself because it fattening elements in the mixture have been removed. "Every safe reducing diet must have the proper energy and body building foods," says experts. Home economists who are expert judges of foods and for values use Weber's bread in the cooking school demonstration Housewives throughout southern California, for years, have shown a marked preference for the gingham-wrapped loaf. South Laguna Area Seeks More Water Confronted with the problem of a deteriorating water system and a constantly increasing population South Laguna, is giving serious consideration to the possibility obtaining water from the Metropolitan Water district through off-shoot lines from the district feeder line to Santa Ana. There is danger that another overflow of the river will result in serious loss to this neighborhood. The high water recalls the flood times of early days. Vigorous acts will be taken to prevent a flood. The attempt to secure aid from the supervisors was unsuccessful, so the board was disinclined to set a precedent in the case. A meeting of citizens was arranged for Tuesday evening, but not a sufficient number of people were present to transact business and the matter was postponed to yesterday afternoon when the attention of the city trustees was called to the necesity of taking immediate steps to protect property. At the next meeting of Invincible Parlor, N.S.G.W. Monday evening complements will be made for officers to act during the ensuing year. Business and the matter was postponed to yesterday afternoon when the attention of the city trustees was called to the necesity of taking immediate steps to protect property. A marriage license was issued on Saturday to A.E. Bird and Orlantha Hendricks, both of Anaheim. The couple were married on Tuesday evening at the home of the bride's parents. S.H. Purcell of the Santa Ana Made was in town on Tuesday afternoon, in search of data for the annual edition of the Los Angeles Times, which always issues a splendid New Year's number. Mr. Purcell is writing up Orange county and will give Anaheim a conspicuous place in the report. Miss Lulu James, daughter of our townisman Plea James, arrived home from San Francisco on Tuesday evening to pass her holiday vacation with parents. Hermar Dickel's countenance was wryted in smiles on Tuesday and would like to do something for the city while he can appreciate the improvement. The site offered is a portion of the Deutsch tract on Lemon street, and being close it is the most suitable vacant ground in the city for the purpose. The block is bounded by Lemon Chapters, Clementine and Cypress. The market price of the tract is $16,000, but it will cost the city only $11,000. Perry Taylor has now established a half-hour service between this city and Los Angeles with his auto stage. The newly founded Star line will run a stage to the city every hour, consequently the passenger service between the two cities is convenient. Missa Mabhi Zelig was the hostess at a summer party given to the Merry Hearts at her home on Clementine Street Friday night. Supper was served at midnight and after the report the guests spent the balance of the night in slumber. Those present were Misses Midrid, Lennon Lillian Wipperman, Ella Schottler, Helen Dedstrom, Douglas Neff, Ailene Adams, Jeanette Messcrum and Mary Owens. A quarter of an inch of rain fell Thursday morning making the total precipitation for the season close to three inches. Letters of administration have been petitioned for that House Schmidt of this city upon the estate of Fred Schmidt. The estate valued at $2,500 goes to the widow and three children. Assemblyman elect J.C.Burke of Santa Ana is attorney for the petitioner. After conducting his business and would like to do something for the city while he can appreciate the improvement. Hermar Dickel's countenance was wretched in smiles on Tuesday at the arrival of a baby boy at his residence. Avery and Eve Hardy's smokehouse was entered by thieves on Thursday night and twenty-five dollars worth of bacon stolen. There is no clue to the thieves, as it was raining in torrents on the evening in question and all tracks were obliterated. It was probably the work of tramps as there have been a number of them in town lately. Max Nebelung's rain gauge recorded a precipitation of 4.27 inches of water for the storm up to Sunday evening at 7 o'clock. Total for the season 10.23 inches. A light sprinkle of rain fell yesterday morning and last evening the indications were that we should have a heavy downpour before morning. Never before have such beautiful Christmas presents been offered by our merchants. Those in search of toys, Christmas and New Years cards, fancy dressing cases, candies and tree ornaments will go to Jos. Helmsen's or R. Luedke's stores. In jewelry P. Pellegrin & Sons make an excellent display. Dr. Hunt is making a superb display of toys and fancy articles and his miniature Christmas tree is a sight to behold. Letters of administration have been petitioned for that house Schmidt of this city upon the estate of Fred Schmidt. The estate valued at $2,500 goes to the widow and three children. Assemblyman elect J. C. Burke of Santa Ana is attorney for the petitioner. After conducting his business 20 years in Anaheim A., Nagel has disposed of his hardware store to O. N. Schleusener of Los Angeles: Mr. Nagel began the business in 1894 in partnership with L.E. Miller. Two years later the stock was divided and each conducted a separate establishment. Mr. Nagel expects to devote his time to his other interests in Anaheim. Walt Kohler, Charley Conliff and N. B. Tedford went down to the gun club territory Wednesday after ducks. They bagged the limit within a couple of hours—that, is Walt and Charley did—but Ted, who is considered one of William Pesen has an excellent stock of fresh candies. Coming down to more substantial presents one need only to visit the stores of Rimpau Bros. or S. S. Pederman which are showing the latest designs in dry goods. In Christmas groceries the establishments of H. Cahen, P. Davis & Bro., Wallop and Cheeseman will be found stocked to repletion with everything in the grocery line. W. R. Harker has his stock of harness, saddlery, buggy robes, etc., displayed especially for Christmas buyers. Torry & Towne are also displaying a fine line of Christmas dry goods. Keep your money at home and buy presents from firms who advertise in the Gazette. On Unbeaten Team Harry Tanaka (above) of Anaheim is one of the members of the undefeated and united Colorado School of Mines football squad of 1939. Tanaka is a reserve backfield man and has seen action in the majority of the seven Mines victories over Rocky Mountain teams. He is the lightest man on the Oredigger squad weighing 150 pounds. This is Tanaka's second year of varsity football at Colorado Mines. Hints Given on Baking Powder Miss Nancy Baker, who conducted the Anaheim Gazette cooking school, says that for best results in baking it is a good plan to follow these simple rules: Use the amount of baking powder recommended on the can. Because of the high strength of K.C. baking powder which she used to a cup of well sifted flour for most recipes, this is equivalent to one heaping teaspoonful to a quart of flour. Code is Used for Signs on Highway Do you know that yellow highway signs mean danger? Colors and shapes or road markers follow a definite code, points out the signposting department of the Automobile Club of Southern California. Warning signs are always yellow, excepting the advance railroad crossing type, which must be circular and white with black letters as specified by state law. The yellow "slow" types are diamond shaped, and caution types are square or rectangular. "Stop" and "no parking" signs are the only two types in red. Other regulatory signs and direction types are square or rectangular with black and white colors. U.S. number signs are shield-shaped, and California highway number signs are formed like an acorn. All yellow slow signs are placed where a permanent physical hazard exists and reduction in speed is necessary for safety, says the club. U.S. number signs for through routes are planned so that odd numbers represent the north-south routes and even the east-west. Motorists who make a practice of watching for signs will find them protective devices, notes the organization... They may save one driver from speeding arrest in restricted zones or other perils of the road. Because of the high strength of K.C. baking powder which she used to a cup of well sifted flour for most recipes. This is equivalent to one heaping teaspoonful to a quart of flour. Careful measurement is very necessary as just more or less than a recipe calls for will not produce best results. Another scoring of good baking is to be sure that the baking powder is thoroughly mixed with the flour and other ingredients. The more thoroughly the baking powder and flour are mixed before you add moisture, the better your results are likely to be. Sift three or four times. For biscuits make it smooth dough that can be handled without sticking and bake in moderate oven. For cakes have your oven slow to moderate at first, until the cake is fully risen, then increase heat so as to just brown lightly. Miss Baker says that K.C. the brand she used in cooking schools is manufactured by baking powder specialists who make nothing but baking powder-controlled by expert chemists of national reputation. It is always uniform in quality and should be used to produce for you the kind of baked goods you will be proud to serve. Martial Conflict Institute's Theme Europe's conflict will furnish the major part of the background for addresses and round tables at the seventeenth Institute of World Affairs which opens at the Riverside Mission Inn on Sunday, December 10. Under the leadership of Dr. R.B. von KleinSimid, president of the University of Southern California and chancellor of the institute and Dr. Eliot C. Mears, of Stanford university, serving this year as its general director, the meeting or representatives of 22 universities will continue through Friday, December 15. Four New Chalets Nearly Completed Four new chalets, recently completed by the Union Pacific railroad to round out continental-styled Sun Valley Village, will be "house-warmed" by the more than 100 American and Canadian collegians enlivening Christmas week in connection with the second annual Intercollegiate Ski competition, December 25 to January 1. Concentration of the college skiers in the chalets serves the dual purpose of housing the lively but serious minded younger winter sportsmen as a unit for training and releasing more commodious accommodations in Sun Valley Lodge and the Challenger Inn for the general public.
