Drivers License Tests are Rigid
It takes more than an application to obtain a license to drive a motor vehicle in California.
Any one of 840,846 persons who applied to department of motor vehicles in the first nine months of this year will testify to the fact that the state agency is quietly going after the task of weeding out potential accident causes through incapable drivers. Exactly 113,559 of the applicants discovered that they could not immediately pass the tests for a license and, on a second or subsequent examination, 5298 of the primary failures were permanently refused the privilege to operate a vehicle in California.
Poor eyesight, inability to understand rules of the road, physical defects and inability to actually operate a vehicle safely were reasons for failure, according to Howard R. Philbrick, director of motor vehicles, who contends that preventing a deficient driver from operating a car on California's highways is the possible factor in saving several lives in addition to that of the person denied a license.

Meat Regulating Ordinance Passed
Sale and Distribution Come Under Terms of New Law Adopted Tuesday
Orange county supervisors, Tuesday passed a new ordinance which regulates the sale and distribution of meat, fish, rabbits and poultry and provides a compact and effective weapon for purifying the meat business. The new ordinance repeals three old laws on the county books.
Not only meat and fish markets, but sausage kitchens, poultry and rabbit slaughtering establishments, processing plants and peddlers are regulated by the new ordinance. It covers not only sanitary handling of the product to which it applies, but also the matter of building construction of plants and markets.
The small farmer who raises and retails his own wares is not affected by the ordinance, which does not apply to persons slaughtering their own rabbits or poultry and selling it at retail and not for resale.
The new ordinance requires that hamburger or ground beef must not contain more than three per cent added water and not more than 30 per cent fat, and can contain no offal, which means heart, liver, tongue, tripe, lungs, blood and kidneys.
If there is more than three per cent water in its content, or more than a tenth of one per cent of benzoate of soda, or cereal, starch or flour added, such ground meat must be placarded with a notice to that effect when it is offered for sale.
The same regulations apply to

The same regulations apply to pork sausage, except that the per cent of fat permitted is placed at a maximum of 50.
Sale of rabbits and poultry found to be innutritious, adulterated, unwholesome, corrupt or affected by any form of disease is prohibited.
Any person with a contagious or communicable disease, or who has come from a place where such disease exist, such as a sick room, is banned from employment in any establishment handling products covered by the ordinance.
Other provisions of the new ordinance deal with refrigeration, inspection, permits and transportation.

thinks peanut butter cookies are without a peer.
So, Mary Mills at Fisher's reasoned it should certainly lend a delicious flavor to hot breads. The result: Peanut butter bread is one of the many recipes included in the Biskit Mix "Around the Clock" recipe book. It goes like this:
2/3 cup peanut butter
1½ cup brown sugar
2 eggs
3 cups Biskit Mix
1¼ cups milk.
Cream peanut butter and sugar thoroughly. Add well-beaten eggs
Mix alternately with the milk. Stir until combined, pour into a greased loaf pan, and bake 45 to 50 minutes at 350 degrees.
This recipe is just a sample of the dozens of simple but delicious recipes any expert or amateur cook can make in a hurry or at her leisure with the Around the Clock recipe book as her guide. It truly deserves to be tucked handily behind the kitchen clock for it has suggestions for almost every hour.
If you would like a copy, send a biskit mix top to the mill.
