"DOWN WITH BUSINESS"
Wednesday noon, speaking before a businessmen's service club in Santa Ana, Roy Smith, of Los Angeles, who recently resigned from the federal securities and exchange commission, made some very amazing and unusual statements.
Smith charged that there is not a single federal agency af any size today that is free from Communism.
And from his remarks, we may see how some of the subversive activities are carried on. For example, one federal employee in Smith's division of the SEC told Smith, privately, that it was his job "to do everything he could to smash the large companies now operating in this country."
That is a black and damning report on the activities of some of our public servants. It is the same sort of thing which was attributed to "Tommy the Cork" Corcoran some time ago when he said: "Business is against us, so we're going to be against business."
It seems to us that the first work to be done is the restoration of confidence. Ridding the government of all un-American agitators will help us in this regard.

The divine demand, "Work on your own salvation;" confront each of us today, and the method prescribed and used by the Master is as available and as effective now as when he told his followers: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." The truth about what? The truth about one's self, Science of true selfhood. And from what is this truth to free us? Jesus did not say that he know the truth would free merely in some particular respect such as from sin, but that it would make us free—free in every respect—which means freedom not only from sin, but also from sickness, disease, death, lack, old age, unemployment, unhappiness, in harmony, and imperfection in every kind. And he proved the liberating power of Truth in his own ministry.
According to his statement, he have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you," Christ Jesus marked out the way, and Christian Science shows us how to follow the Way-showing An image and likeness being the perfect reflection of its original must be exactly like it in quality hence man, in the image and likeness of God, perfectly reflected every quality of divine Mind Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth and Love. The FARMERS CORNER
by RALPH H. TAYLOR
Executive Secretary Agricultural Council of California
EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the third in a series of articles by Ralph H. Taylor analyzing the Ham and Eggs pension act as it relates to the farmer.
California farmers have reason to know, from bitter, harsh experience, that when consumer purchasing power is cut down by economic upheavals, prices of farm products usually go into a tailspin—and the farming industry pays the bill in enormous losses!
During the past ten years of depressed markets and ruinous prices, thousands of California farmers have gone to the wall. Other thousands, who are still hanging on, determined to weather the storm, will be deeply in debt for years to come.
Demoralized markets have taken a terrific toll from California agriculture—and California farmers certainly can't afford to repeat the experience. For that reason, more than any other, this writer appeals to farmers to get the facts concerning the vicious 30-Thursday pension proposal—and then to get to work, educating their friends and neighbors, so that a united farm vote can be marshaled against it.
For if 30-Every-Thursday becomes the law of California, the California farming industry will be faced with another period of demoralized markets and shattered prices schedules—with consumers attempting to buy farm products with devaluated Ham and Eggs warrants, and with California's purchasing power for California commodities drastically reduced.
Farmers need to read the hand-writing on the wall, read it well—and than get into action to avert disaster.
Consider these simple facts:
The 30-Every-Thursday scheme is based on the "something-for-nothing" fallacy—a fallacy that farmers should recognize better betrayed into believing in the impossible; several hundred thousand public employees—policemen, firemen, purses, doctors, stenographers, school teachers and other city county and state workers; tens of thousands of workers in private businesses and industries, whose firms do business with government agencies and would therefore be compelled to accept warrants; hundreds of thousands of workers and labor men, in every category, who would find they must either accept warrants or not have work.
Of course, as you have probably concluded, this preposterous plan will break down and fail to operate after a time—but don't forget, it will be part of the state constitution, voted there (if it passed) by California voters. And it would take at least two years to repeal it and start clearing up the wreckage.
Those two years—or possibly three or four years—would spell bankruptcy for thousands of California farmers. And you might be one of the thousands!
(Next: "Why are the Communists supporting 30-Every-Thursday?")
Business Index for September Mounts
Many lines of business in California and the far west experienced an upsurge in September, according to O. E. Hanson, manager of the local branch of Bank of America.
Quoting the current Business Review prepared by the bank's analysis and research department, the local banker revealed that the far western business index rose 3.7 per cent over August, and 6.1 per cent over September, 1938.
The Lesson-Sermon includes these statements from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "The design of Love is to reform the sinner." "The sharp experiences belief in the supposititious life matter, as well as our disappointments and ceaseless woes, turn-like tired children to the arms divine Love. Then we begin learn Life in divine Science."
Consider these simple facts:
The 30-Every Thursday scheme is based on the "something-for-nothing" fallacy—a fallacy that farmers should recognize better than other classes of citizens, because farmers know they must plant to reap; they must work to produce.
If it passes, California, for the period it remains on the statute books, will have seceded from the union, at least economically, for California will have a kind of "money" recognized nowhere else in the United States. Yet California farmers, who are expected to deal in this "funny money," must do business in every state in the nation and in many foreign markets to dispose of their products.
Home markets (California markets) would be completely demoralized—for 30-Thursday "dollar" warrants, at the time of issue, would be worth four cents less than nothing. Yet they would be in general circulation, with tens of thousands of wildered citizens demanding that they be accepted at face value. And every time a farmer pasted a two-cent stamp on the back of a "dollar" warrant, he would depress the price of his products by exactly that amount. If he refused to accept such warrants, he would be penalized with a three per cent transactions tax—which would cut the value of his commodities by that amount.
Who would be using warrants, or attempting to use them, to buy your products? Approximately 800,000 pensioners, who have been

in the middle of the dam and will be covered with a huge mountain of impervious material.
Adobe Taken From Hill
This material, a red adobe, long used in the making of bricks and pottery in the Prado district, is being obtained from the hill back of the old Prado school. A steady procession of trucks day and night haul it on to the dam base where bulldozers spread it, water wagons spray the dirt and sheep-foot tampers roll it in a solid, compact mass.
At another point huge works are being rushed on the spillway designed to carry a flood of more than twice the size of that of March, 1938. Huge carry-alls, pulled by a diesel caterpillar, haul 50 yards of material at a trip from this area to the lower side of the dam.
Sandstone Blocks
The army design for the dam includes in addition to the central section of impervious material, two other sections of different type. The first will be of semi-previous nature and the outer or face will be of pervious material designed to permit drainage off dam faces without damage to the impervious central section. Huge sandstone blocks will form the "toe" of the dam at both upper and lower sides.
The channel with diversion dykes still remains open for winter

Field Mice, Skunks Devour Pests' Eggs
Field mice and skunks have come to the aid of farmers in Plumas county, the bureau of entomology and plant quarantine, State Department of Agriculture, announced today.
By digging into the soil for grasshopper eggs, the aromatic mammals and the burrowing rodents have reduced the number of eggs found in July by 75 to 85 per cent, it was estimated.
Apparently the severity of next year's grasshopper hordes in Plumas county has been greatly reduced, a-state entomologist said.
State Turkey Crop to Set New Record
Indications are that the 1939 turkey crop in California is the largest on record for the state, the Federal-State crop Reporting service announced at the State Department of Agriculture.
California ranked second in number of turkeys produced in 1938, exceeded only by Texas with a production of 3,228,000 birds.
Turkey production in California has expanded steadily since 1929, when the state's production was 1,229,000 birds. By 1938 the crop had increased to 2,594,000 hens and toms.
