Catholic Church Had Early Start
St. Boniface's History Goes Back to the First Group of Settlers Here
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of St. Boniface church, November 5, 1935, Most Reverend John J. Cantwell conveyed his felicitations to the parish, saying in part:
"Anaheim during all these years has continued not only to enlarge its boundaries, but to grow spiritually and intellectually. The parish of St. Boniface, especially, has within its territorial limits not only a fine church and rectory and parochial school, but also a distinguished Central high school under eminent instructors. It has these many years St. Catherine's School for Boys, and the Dominican Sisters have endeared themselves by a devoted life to the people of Anaheim. You are in another generation, renewing the work of the old Franciscan Fathers."
While the mission history of Orange county begins with the founding of San Juan Capistrano in 1776, the parochial history of Anaheim begins with the settlement of German Catholics on the site of the present city in 1858. The following year the colony donated lots for the erection of a church. The vicar general of the diocese, Very Rev. Anaheim begins with the settlement of German Catholics on the site of the present city in 1858. The following year the colony donated lots for the erection of a church. The vicar general of the diocese, Very Rev. Blas Raho, representing the bishop of the diocese of Monterey and Los Angeles, dedicated the parish, which for a number of years did not have an edifice. Services were conducted in the home of Mrs. Theodore Rimpau at Broadway and Palm streets. The first baptism recorded in Anaheim was that of August Langenberger, whose father was prominent in founding Anaheim and who erected the first merchandise store in what is now Orange county.
From this time on mass was celebrated at intervals and as the number of the faithful increased, services were held in a little adobe at the intersection of Los Angeles and Center streets. Later, the first small church was erected, and Father Weninger, S. J., preached the first mission in 1870. In 1875 Father Victor Forin took up residence in Anaheim and renovated the church, which was located on West Cypress street between Los Angeles and Lemon streets. A tower was added to the edifice by Father and night ever since. Father Hawe in 1885, and the Angelus has rung faithful morning, noon Hawe also built the first rectory.
About the middle of 1886 Rev. Peter Stoetters became pastor and remained until 1893, when he was succeeded by Father John Caballeria. It was during Father Stoetter's pastorate that the Dominican Sisters from San Jose were invited to open a school. Sisters arrived in 1889, and established what is now St. Catherine's Military school.
The church and rectory were moved in 1894 by Father Caballeria to North Palm street, just north of the present site. From 1895 the parish had as successive pastors the Revs. Smith, Cote and Bannon, and during the latter's tenure an age and half of land was purchased at the northwest corner of Palm and Center streets, but disagreement over ownership of title retarded building of the new church until 1902 when plans were drawn under the Rev. E. P. Griffith, whose health failed and he was succeeded by the Rev. F. J. Dubbell, who supervised the erection of the present church.
At the top is shown the present St. Boniface Catholic church, located at Center and Palm streets. The middle photograph is of the first Catholic church of Anaheim, which was built in the 70's. At the bottom is Father Henry Gross, present pastor of St. Boniface Catholic church.

VFW are Leaders in Fraternal Life
Although not quite five years old, Anaheim post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars has become an active patriotic organization. It annually increases its activities and is looked upon as one of the more progressive posts in southern California.
The post was instituted on December 10, 1934, as Post No. 3173. W. R. Borg was chosen the first commander, but a short time later he moved to San Diego and Frank Clark, senior vice commander, became commander. Other officers the first year were Thomas Hawkins, junior vice commander; George Miller, quartermaster; James W. Roberts, adjutant; Harry Wardon, post advocate; Viggo Mallin, chaplain; Eddis O. Lane, officer of the day; Charles Griffith, patriotic instructor; J. B. Ricker, post historian; Clarance Carr, guard; George Walters, Ricker and L. N. Wisser, trustees.
The objects of the organization are fraternal, patriotic, historical and educational; to preserve and strengthen comradeship among its members; to assist worthy comrades; to perpetuate the memory and history of our dead, and to assist their widows and orphans; to maintain true allegiance to the government of the United States of America, and fidelity to its constitution and laws; to foster true patriotism; to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom, and to preserve and defend the United States for all enemies, whomsoever.
Three members of the Anaheim
On September 21, 1902, ground was broken and the cornerstone laid by Bishop Montgomery. On December 21 three new bells dedicated, and on June 28, 1903, the structure was dedicated by the Rt. Rev. Thomas J. Conaty, bishop of the diocese of Monterey and Los Angeles.
With the increase in the number of parishioners, numerous societies were formed. A council of the Knights of Columbus was organized September 30. In 1911 Father Dubbell built a new rectory on all lot adjoining the church, facing Cetner street. The following year, 1912, witnessed the erection of St. Joseph's academy, on West Broadway, between Palm and Helena streets. This institution was formally opened in September of that year by the Dominican Sisters from Cuba, Mother Mary Henrietta in charge.
In 1918 Father Dubbell was succeeded by the Rev. P. Browne, who, realizing the need for a larger church, added east and west wings to the present structure. The interior was also decorated. A commodious parish hall was erected in 1924 on the site of the old church. On September 15, 1930, the parochial school was officially opened with the Dominican Sisters in charge.
Father Browne died in February, 1937, and in April, 1937, Father Henry Gross was appointed pastor.

The Anaheim council first met in the Old Millows hall, later moving to the second floor of a building until recently occupied by the Fisher Eldred store. In 1915 Stephen Kesterman member, added a second story to the building he having constructed on East Center street and has since been used as the council's hall.
The council stands in the forefront among the fraternal bodies of Anaheim and is every ready to do Its part in all civic activities.
Looking at the proposition today, the major no doubt had a sensible vision of the things in store for the future.
Langenberger First Store Owner Here
In the early days of Anaheim, A. Langenberger conducted the only general merchandise store on the corner of Center and Lemon streets, now occupied by The S. Q. R. Store. He carried a well selected stock of groceries and hardware.
Major Strobel Saw Future of Catalina
The late Major Max Strobel lived with his family on South Lemon street in the early days. The major conceived the idea of colonizing Satalina Island and sought financial aid in Eugland; but the venture did not materialize.
Father Browne died in February, 1937,
Father Henry Gross was appointed pastor.
ANAHEIM AMERICAN LEGION POST
ORGANIZED ON OCTOBER 19, 1919
Twentieth anniversary of the meeting which resulted in the formation of Anaheim post of the American Legion was marked a week ago by that organization, which now has become one of the outstanding groups in the civic life of Anaheim.
Seventy-five men were present at that original meeting, held on October 19, 1919, in the offices of the board of trade in the Commercial hotel, now known as the Valencia hotel. William P. Webb, Jr., then a rising young attorney, presided.
Featured speaker was Buron Fitts, now district attorney of Los Angeles county, who gave an outline of the aims and ideals of the American Legion. Support of the community was pledged by J. Frederick Ahlborn, secretary of the board of trade.
It was unanimously voted to apply for a charter in the American Legion.
The following week the same group, augmented by others, met in the same place and perfected the post's organization, with Webb as president; Joseph Collings, first vice president; Edward Backs, second vice president; Earl E. Smith, secretary, and Morris W. Martenet, jr., treasurer.
By the third meeting the roster of the post revealed the names of 150 veterans.
The original officers held over for the full year of 1920 and plans were made for a local observance of Armistice day to be accompanied by a week of carnival spirit.
The first Armistice day parade idea caught on and what had been intended as a purely local observance of the day became a county affair of magnitude far greater than its sponsors ever dared to dream.
The first home of the post after its charter had been received was in the Fisher building on West Center street.

Webb, or commander as the position now is known, was re-elected for the year 1921. J. J. Hunt was chosen adjutant and George Prince finance officer.
During 1925, one of the most important years in the post's history, the post aided in raising the American Legion's $5,000,000 child welfare fund, assisted the California Valencia Orange show, and was host to the Armistice day celebration. It was during the same year that Commander Ray E. Smith perfected his emergency plan which was later adopted by the national department.
The next year Smith's plan was put to practical use when a flood from the Santa Ana river inundated the Mexican settlement in the north section of Anaheim. Again during the major flood of 1933, the American Legion played an active part in rescue work.
The American Legion post of Anaheim has always played an important rolls in civic enterprises, particularly those of a patriotic nature. Commander of the post for the coming year is Glen Peck.
Hertz, a German, discovered radio waves in 1887, 20 years after Maxwell, an Englishman, asserted they must exist.
River Protected by Large Guard Crew
Protecting the town's water by force is one of the chapters of Anaheim's early history. At one time when water in the Santa Ana river was scarce, Anaheim residents had reason to believe efforts might be made to obtain water illegally.
The result was that local citizens guarded the division gate up the river to see that no one tampered with it. Old residents recall that Frank Porter was captain of the crew.
Operator of Street Car Always Obliged
The late Nick Bittner was conductor and motorman on the street car that operated on Center street between the railroad depots many years ago. Bittner was very accommodating, and when he saw a man run toward the car waving his hands, he would stop and wait for the man to climb aboard.
The Pony Express still rides in the state of Arizona.
