Development of Nation is Shown Graphically in Newly Finished Map The life story of our nation—the autobiography of a mighty republic which grew from a tiny settlement on the Atlantic coast—has been brought up to date with the completion by the General Land office of a new official master map of the United States. Carefully compiled from official reports, presidential orders, and decisions of the United States board on geographical names, the new master chart shows in graphic detail the boundaries of states, location of thousands of cities and towns, the courses of principal rivers and railroads, and the hundreds of national parks, monuments, historic sites, Indian reservations, reclamation projects, forests, and other portions of the public domain set aside for the conservation of the nation's natural resources. For the first time Uncle Sam's tiny South Pacific possessions of Canton, Enderbury, Howland, Baker, and Jarvis Islands are included in the official master map, while advancement of the conservation program on the mainland is shown by the addition of Mount Olympic national park in Washington and the George Washington. Behind its smooth, printed surface lies the saga of hazardous adventure and scientific achievement in surveying 1,800,000,000 acres of Uncle Sam's public land through activities first planned by Thomas Jefferson in 1785. Drawn to the scale of 37 miles to the inch, the map—seven feet long and five feet high—presents a panoramic picture of the growth of the United States through more than 150 years of its history. Tracing the development westward from the original 13 states, boundaries of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the territory in Florida ceded by Spain in 1809, the areas involved in the Texas annexation of 1845, the Mexican cessions in 1848, the Gadsden Purchase in 1863, and other historic additions to the nation are clearly set forth. A series of inset charts furnish visual descriptions of Alaska, the Philippine Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Hawaiian Islands, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Panama Canal Zone. The only publication of its kind prepared by specific direction of congress, the new master chart of the United States affords a key to the identification of original title to approximately 6,000,000 parcels of land transferred to private ownership by federal patent during more than a century of negotiations under public land laws. Most of National Forest is Close District Ranger Ed Grant, of Corona headquarters of the Tucoo district on the Cleveland National forest, advises that Juniper marked the beginning of the sure restrictions on this district for the hot, dry summer month. On June 1 of each year, due to extremely high fire hazard existing in the mountains of south California, the Trabuco district closed to all entrance, except within the Trabuco, San Juja Modjecka, and Silverado canals, and along the Ortega highway from Capistrano to Elsinore. Recreational facilities are maintained in these areas and public is invited to make all of them possible. This closure placed on the rest of the district by the regional forester in Francisco, and is not removed until the winter rains make brush covered hills again safe for public use. He All-Year Club is Winner of Honor American newspaper publisher rate southern California's tourist advertising campaigns, prepared by the All-Year club, first in the nation's community promotion campaigns, and outstanding among all types of newspaper advertising in America during 1938. James R. Page, president of the southland tourist-attracting organization, announced that All-Year club ads, included with 58 camaiens advertising all types of products, and selected from more than 5,000 national newspaper advertisers, were the only community campaigns included in the American Newspaper Publishers' association 1938 Blue Book. Basing their selections on difficulty of sales problems involved, methods used and results achieved, the newspaper association declared the selected campaigns among the "most significant and interesting stories of 1938." "The Blue Book selection: marking the third regional and national award won by all the All-Year club campaign in a year, brings us unbiased and fresh evidence of the superiority of southern California methods of developing lucrative tourist travel." Page declared. He said the current award represented the judgment of the most critical advertising jury in the world. Page explained the southern California ads as double edged for the benefit of community prosperity, bringing well-financed tourists to create a $194,000,000 annual flow of new money to the area's trade streams, and warning unemployed persons in their own interest not to come to California.
