Citrus Exchange Official Predicts Improved Season Abert H. Kirchmann Reveals Factors Which Indicate Increased Returns Definite bases for hope that the citrus industry in California will experience a better year in 1939 than it did in 1938 were found by A. H. Kirchmann on a recent trip to the east, south and middle west. Kirchmann is manager of the Northern Orange County Citrus Exchange and spent six weeks visiting citrus trade centers. The citrus exchange official pointed to three reasons for an improved season. They are an apparent increase in the nation's purchasing power which amounts to from 10 to 15 per cent; a general improvement in marketing conditions, and an optimistic outlook among persons on the east coast. Disadvantages Listed How much these advantages will be offset by a like number of disadvantages: Kirchmann was unable to say definitely. Factors which are against an improved season are the small crop, small sizes and later season. The small- Baby Fur Seal Caught by Anaheim Man A baby fur seal, caught in a net off Newport Beach last Tuesday, is creating considerable interest around the W. N. Polston home, 700 N. Sabina street. Every youngster, and most of the adults, in the neighborhood have viewed the mammal. The young seal, about three feet in length, was caught by T. A. Miller, son-in-law of the Polstons, while he and Mrs. Miller was fishing on a live-bait boat. The mammal was captured with a net. Colonists Capture League Track Cup Sunset Loop Championship is Won by Anaheim High School Friday Ability to slip runners, jumpers and throwers into second, third and fourth place positions, enabled Coach Dick Glover’s Anaheim Colonists to capture the second annual Sunset league track and field championship last Friday at Newport Harbor. Anaheim tallied 39 2/3 points to edge out Jordan high school, pre-meet favorite, Citrus Men Plan to Exploit Gold Found on Lands Three Ranchers Living East of Anaheim to Develop Recent Discovery What the future may bring forth remains to be seen, but three ranchers living east of Anaheim are planning to exploit to the limit the traces of placer gold which have been discovered on their properties. The ranchers, all of whom have considerable citrus holdings, are J. W. Walls, Fred Brown and Dan Henry. Their ranches are on Jefferson avenue. Assays of samples from all three properties, which include about 130 acres of Santa Ana river bottom, have shown that free placer gold is present in quantities which may mean valuable returns. Found in March Discovered first early last month by an employee on Walls' ranch, the gold has since been located on the property owned by Brown and Henry. The employe, James Watson, made the discovery while digging a cesspool, turning the sample over to Mrs. Walls and urging that she have it assayed. The tests showed from $1.05 to $3.50 a ton. Factors which are against an improved season are the small crop, small sizes and later season. The smaller crop is due to two freezes during the past winter. Oranges are below the average of the past 14 years in their growth. The packing season in Orange county is not expected to begin much before the third week of next month, which is exceptionally late. Growers producing first grade fruit are expected to receive a good profit, the exchange manager indicated. The majority of the citrus ranchers, however, will have to rely on well-organized selling activities to realize a profit. "On Upswing" Kirchmann expressed the belief that the industry is again on the upswing. Business conditions generally are improved in the east, south and middle west, he pointed out. This factor plus the definitely increased consumption of citrus fruit during the past two years, are leading indications that a more successful season is approaching. The exchange official also pointed to the acceptance of orange juice as an aid to broadening the market for citrus fruits. He added, however, that in some instances this has resulted in demand for small "juice oranges" from Florida in preference to the higher grade fruit. License Renewal Service May End Unless Anaheim residents make use of their opportunity to renew expired automobile operator's licenses here the service will no longer be offered in this city, state examiners revealed today. A large number of local residents have been going to Santa Ana to have their cards renewed, it was said. State examiners are in Anaheim, in the city hall, each Tuesday between 9 o'clock in the morning and noon and between 1:30 o'clock and 4:30 o'clock in the afternoon, it was pointed out. Requests for Won by Anaheim High School Friday Ability to slip runners, jumpers and throwers into second, third and fourth place positions, enabled Coach Dick Glover's Anaheim Colonists to capture the second annual Sunset league track and field championship last Friday at Newport Harbor. Anaheim tallied 39 2/3 points to edge out Jordan high school, pre-meet favorite, and Excelsior. Jordan scored 36¼ points and Excelsior got 35. Huntington Beach, Orange and Newport were badly outdistanced. The three leading teams each won three first places, while Anaheim and Jordan had two men each grouped together for the top spot in the high jump. The Colonists set new meet records in each of the three events they won outright. Ralph Maas toured the 440.yard dash in 52.8 seconds, Burl Gist nabbed the 120-yard high hurdles in 15.6 seconds, and the relay team composed of Wilbur Long, Earl Williams, Maas and Cliff Horton easily won (Continued on page 5) Park Application Filed by Seattle Seattle Rainier Baseball club this week formally applied for use of La Palma park stadium as a training site for next spring. The application was received by Secretary John A. Morgan of the chamber of commerce in the form of a letter from Bill Mulligan, Seattle business manager. Morgan also has received a letter from Connie Mack, president of the Philadelphia club in the American league which revealed that his club would not be interested in the Anaheim park in 1940. Mack had previously written Morgan that the club's plans for next year had not been completed. Small Boy is Hurt by Automobile Here A small Mexican boy, Richard Ortego, suffered a slightly injured foot Monday when he ran into an automobile driven by Walter J. Ross, 308 E. Adele street, according to police reports. Ross was driving on Sabina street, near Chartres street, when the youngster ran into the street Found in March Discovered first early last month by an employee on Walls' ranch, the gold has since been located on the property owned by Brown and Henry. The employe, James Watson, made the discovery while digging a cesspool, turning the sample over to Mrs. Walls and urging that she have it assayed. The tests showed from $1.05 to $3.50 a ton. The next day other samples from deep in the excavation were tested and showed from $21 to $28 a ton. Later, samples taken from the Henry and Brown properties were assayed and showed good value. These samples ranged from 14 inches below the surface to 10 feet or more, the better samples being found at greater depths. Several Tests Made First assays were made by Dr. N.H. Hilton of Santa Ana. Other tests were made by the John Herman laboratory, Ed Eisenhauer, Jr., and the Smith Emery company in Los Angeles. Discovery of gold in large quantities underlying these citrus properties, all located in the Santa Ana river bed, followed the reports several months ago of similar finds on the Ben Yorba ranch, several miles above. Development work on the Yorba property has been progressing slowly and is said to have proved the presence of placer gold in paying quantities. Plan Development Walls, Henry and Brown have made plans to cooperate in a development program which will test possibilities of gold production from beneath the roots of their orange trees, Henry reported. Other ranchers in the area whose groves are planted in this same formation have become greatly interested, it is reported. All of this gold bearing area, as proved by tests made thus far, is alluvial deposit. In most places the sand and gravel deposit is approximately 1,000 feet in depth to the blue shale bedrock. However there are islands of clay known to exist at some points. Engineering details and processes for recovery of the gold have not yet been worked out by the ranchers, but they expect soon to make tests on a commercial basis. Teacher Explains Aptitude Tests KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CONFERS THIRD DEGREE ON 82 CANDIDATES Last Sunday a class of 82 candidates was received into the Knights of Columbus with the conferring of the third degree. The candidates were presented from the councils of Anaheim, Santa Ana, Pomona and Ontario. The ceremonies were conducted by Peter Mitchell of Sacramento, assisted by William Mahedy of San Diego and the degree team from the San Diego council. Following the initiation ceremonies at the Knights of Columbus hall, a banquet was held at St. Boniface Parish hall, which was attended by 350 persons. The banquet was prepared by the St. Boniface Altar society and served by girls of Marywood Central high school and boys of St. Boniface parochial school. William P. McNichols, prominent Hollywood attorney, was the speaker of the evening. He discussed on the need of a return to tolerance as a remedy for theills affecting the nation and the world. Several members of the clergy were present and were introduced by Rev. Father James Nevin. They were Rev. Father Thomas Foley of Huntington Beach, Rev. Father Raymond Tepe of Fullerton and Rev. Father James O'Houlihan of Ontario. Stephen Gallagher, toastmaster of the banquet, introduced the Knights of Columbus officials who were present, including Walter Brown, state secretary; Clyde Ashen, past state deputy; Charles Wolford, district deputy; and Bernard O'Hare, district deputy of the 20th district. Teacher Explains Aptitude Tests Vocational guidance as it is handled at Anaheim union high school was explained to members of the Anaheim Kiwanis club Tuesday noon by William Rickel who is in charge of the work at the high school. Vocational guidance is one of the outstanding efforts of the Kiwanis club. Tests which aid in determining fields in which the student is most adaptable are given only to senior class students, Rickel said. The tests are designed to show the degree of abstract intelligence, social intelligence, artistic intelligence and mechanical intelligence possessed by the student. The three principal classes into which students are placed are extravert, ambivert and introvert, the teacher explained. Rickel was introduced by Dr. M. M. Henderson, program chairman of the day. Rev. Hilgenfeld to Preach Here Sunday Rev. S. F. Hilgenfeld will preach at the morning service at the West Broadway Methodist Episcopal church Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. His subject will be "Revenge is Sweet." Rev. Hilgenfeld is filling the pulpit during the absence of Rev. William Rogatsky, regular pastor. Orange County Spends $650,000 On Santa Ana River Protection Work of reinforcing the Santa Ana river to assure that Orange county would not suffer from damages caused by overflow or breakage of the river cost $650,000, according to a statement released late last week by Supervisor Harry D. Riley of Anaheim. In addition to the statement on cost of the project, Supervisor Riley described the work which has been done. Orange county, itself, did not expend the entire $650,000, the supervisor pointed out. Of that amount, $200,000 was received from the state and was taken from the $5,000,000 flood emergency fund voted at the special session of the legislature last spring. The measure was introduced by Assemblyman Thomas H. Kuchel of Anaheim. 44 Miles of Levees According to Riley, the $650,000 bought 44 miles of levees, covering both sides of a 22-mile stretch of channel. These levees are protected by 20,000 lengths of four-inch pipe, each 20 feet long; 10,000 railroad rails, each 30 feet long, and 327,000 lineal feet of wire fencing. In order to construct tile levees, 750,000 cubic feet of material were removed from the river. This work began one mile northeast of Yorba bridge. Of permanent construction, the levees form a channel capable of handling the full flow of the river that could be released by opening all gates of Prado dam. Riley said. The narrowest point of the channel is 300 feet wide. The bottleneck located a mile and a half below the Yorba bridge has been removed, thus eliminating one of the worst flood hazards on the river. Removal of the menace necessitated purchase of considerable land, which was done through the cooperation of the county flood control district and the county water district. Farmers living in the area of the old bottleneck have been receiving, free of charge, the dirt removed from the river channel. They are using the soil to fill in low places on their ranches. The flood control district is building a road along the top of the levee, to provide access to the area.
