Wind Damage to Citrus is Heavy Twenty-Five Per Cent Loss is Sustained by Navel Oranges Last Week Twenty-five per cent of the navel oranges remaining in California on February 15 were blown from the trees during the three days of severe wind late last week, according to a quick survey by the California Fruit Growers Exchange. “This represents 6,000 cars of navels lost from shipment and completely changes the marketing picture and shipping plans for the balance of the season,” Paul S. Armstrong, general manager, said. Approximately ten per cent of the lemon crop was lost, and while a detailed estimate of the valencia orange crop has not yet been made, it is known that a considerable loss also occurred in this variety. Some districts suffered more than others. These figures represent weighted averages for all districts. Additional losses will occur from damaged fruit dropping from the trees and the heavier cullage necessary to protect quality of shipments. “While many individual growers suffered heavy loss, the final outcome of the loss of volume may mean a higher return for the crop, due to expected improvement in the low market that has existed,” Armstrong said. Rou Mabee Director By WARREN BAYLEY TREASURE ISLAND, San Francisco—I couldn't resist the temptation to attend the opening of the "Golden Gate International Exposition," so back from the desert to Los Angeles and then on up here on Thursday, that I might be ahead of the rush. Although I arrived in the wee hours of the morning, the night spots were still belching forth "tough hombres" clad in red shirts, big hats and cowboy boots, and all wearing a six gun on their hip. San Francisco was having a party. On Friday I visited the “Island” and after viewing this spectacular achievement, I couldn't help but wonder where it all started. Being of an inquisitive nature, I decided to check up. It seems there were two men—a Robinson Crusoe and a Joseph Dixon. Now Crusoe was a character of fiction, but Dixon was and is an earthly inhabitant who still resides in this fair city. No doubt Dixon was somewhat irked that Crusoe had received all the breaks on the treasure and island business, so he wrote a letter to a San Francisco newspaper, stating that he would like to have an island on which to stage a fair, to celebrate the completion of the two island, then everybody would be happy. And so comes “Treasure Island,” 400 acres built up from the bottom of San Francisco Bay, and our newest territorial possession. They just to be sure that Dixon wouldn’t find fault, 41 nations plunked down 50 million dollars and erected the most beautiful group of buildings I have ever seen. And to top it all off, transplanted almost 200,000 trees, that the picture might have a frame. Of course, the island isn’t Dixon’s, but it was his idea and his letter started it all. Certainly in all its beauty it is something to be proud of. It’s funny though, with all the educational things to see I found the largest crowd at “Sally Rand's Nude Ranch.” I guess it's pretty hard to beat Old Man Nature. The Golden Text is from Paul's letter to the Colossians: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him." A Bible citation in the Lesson-Sermon presents these verses about Jesus, from Luke: "And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go they way and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me." One of the passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Edry, states: "Jesus established his church and maintained his mission on a spiritual foundation of Christ-healing. He taught his followers that his religion had a divine Principle, which would cast out error and heal both the sick and the sinning." Buy Now and Buy in Anaheim! REMEMBER THESE KITE SAFETY RULES 1.
