Divided Highway On U.S. 99 Open Steady and safer flow of traffic is the Christmas present for motorists resulting from opening of a new section of pavement paralleling the old, straight-away into Bakersfield on U. S. Highway 99 north of Los Angeles. For the 19-mile stretch on the inland route between one mile north of Grapevine station and 10 miles south of Bakersfield, which was dedicated December 16, becomes the west side of a divided highway. The exceptionally heavy travel on this, one of the major arteries of the state, will flow one-way on each section of old and new road, separated by a center tree-lined area which will serve to eliminate accidents. Forests Opened Following Rains One of the longest and driest fire seasons experienced in years was officially declared at an end last week, while the forest was being drenched by the first general rainfall of the season. Acting Forest Supervisor Norman J. Farrell, announced that sufficient rain had fallen in the back country to permit closing the season and lifting restrictions on smoking and other fire regulations. According to Farrell all areas, closed by order of the regional forester, on the Palomar and Trabuco districts of the Cleveland National Forest have been lifted. All forest guard and lookout positions have been dropped, and only a skeleton organization remains work this winter. Farrell pointed out, however that many serious fires have occurred in the past, after the fire season was declared over, and suggested that, in event of periods or dry weather following the rains, all persons visiting the forests should use every precaution to prevent fires for starting or getting away. Camping and campfires, he said will still be allowed only at posted camp grounds, and the person responsible for the fire must have a camp fire permit, which may be obtained free from any forest officer. SPORTOPIX by RUSS McCOMB With nothing of particular importance happening in the Anaheim sports field this week, this column will again be devoted to junior college basketball. Chief item of interest in the Jaysee cage sport was the second annual invitational tournament held at Chaffey last Friday and Saturday and won by Fullerton. Santa Ana did pretty well, and would have done better had the Dons not met Long Beach JC just when the Vikings were the hottest. Santa Ana beat Pasadena in the first round and then lost to Long Beach, 44 to 41, in the second round. With two former Colonists, Lynn Arnett and Ted DeVelbiss, playing most of the time, the Dons put up a fine battle against Long Beach, but the Vikings found their long shots working exceptionally well and they used them to advantage over Santa Ana's tight zone defense. The writer saw Long Beach in two subsequent games, and in neither did the Vikings cage as many long tosses as against Santa Ana. Fullerton's Hornets waltzed through three preliminary games before facing Chaffey in the final round. The Panthers gave Coach Art Nunn's quintet the stiffest kind of argument, only to lose in the last few minutes of play after having a lead throughout most of the game. The final tally was 42 to 40. More experience, and the ability to apply pressure when it counted the most turned the tide in favor... MARKS INDUSTRIAL SHRINE ... Historical Society of Western Pa. honored aluminum industry's founders by placing plaque on Pittsburgh site where metal was first made commercially in tiny plant 50 years ago. Photo shows: Mrs. Alfred E. Hunt, widow of one of founders, and her grandson Richard, who unveiled plaque. Wild-Cat Stages Curbed by State Operators of "wild-cat" stages met trouble recently on the California border when, at the instruction of William G. Bonelli, member of the state board of equalization, an inspector for the motor vehicle transportation license tax act was stationed by Blythe in Riverside county. As a result of his check-up, 11 operators were investigated, five being arrested for violating the act which requires an annual license fee and payment of three percent tax on the monthly gross receipts of all who haul either passengers or merchandise for hire on public highways. All five pleaded guilty in Blythe justice court. More experience, and the ability to apply pressure when it counted the most turned the tide in favor of Fullerton. The Hornets amassed a total of 199 points in winning their four games, beating Ventura, 40-21; Pomona, 57-22, and Long Beach, 60-39, before the final game. Pomona, Long Beach and Chaffey were all played Saturday and enabled Fullerton to score 159 points during the day, for an average of 53 points per game. Chaffey and Long Beach, the only other teams to play four games, averaged less than 40 points a game each, to Fullerton's average of 50 for four games. Unless some of the eastern conference teams were not at full strength for the tournament, as was the case with Fullerton last year, it is obvious that the race for the conference championship will be between the Hornets and Chaffey again this year. Coach Muggs Mitchell has a smooth-playing, fine-shooting aggregation in DeVore, Hershey, Doll, White and Terry, who may accomplish what no conference team has done in two years; beat Fullerton. All but Hershey played last year, with Terry the only one not a regular. Meantime, up at Modesto Pasadena Jaysee's first string trounced Modesto to win the title in a tournament featuring northern Jaysees, with Compton and Los Angeles joining the Bulldogs from the south. Passadena's forwards, Robinson and O'Gara, were chosen on the all-star team by coaches. Although many earthquakes shift the earth at the surface, others leave no visible trace of such movements, since they occur far in the earths interior.
