YOUR HOME AND MINE BY ANNE WILSON
Eat your cranberries and have them too by following the old-fashioned custom of using the bright winter-time fruit for Christmas decorations. In the sketch shown above, the modern design of the little silver tree makes a unique background for the string of bright colored berries wound round and round it. Cranberries are also used with chunks of orange and marshmallows as a garnish around the turkey, while the silver sauce boat contains the traditional 10-minute cranberry sauce, an indispensable part of the American holiday dinner since earliest Puritan days.
The tree of silver cardboard is not too complicated for the older children to fashion, while the littlest tots will squeal with pleasure if allowed to string the bright colored berries into a long chain. A good stout thread with a not-too-thick needle will keep the youngsters occupied for an entire afternoon and provide a novel touch to the table decorations.
The tangy taste of Cranberry Juice Cocktail will sharpen that before-dinner appetite while its rich red color will further enhance the festive feeling of the day. Mock Strawberry Shortcake is novel enough to be an exciting holiday dessert. Cranberry Muffins, Cranberry Cookies—all add that extra zest which makes the holiday meals so memorable.
CRANBERRY JUICE COCKTAIL
1 pound (4 cups) Cranberries
4 cups water
½ cup sugar
Cook cranberries and water until all the skins pop open. Strain through cheesecloth. Heat, add sugar and boil for 2 minutes. Chill before serving Lemon, orange, grapefruit or pineapple juice, ginger ale or other beverages combine well with this cocktail.
MOCK STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE
1 cup chopped Cranberries
1 cup chopped tart apple
¼ cup crushed pineapple
1 cup sugar
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup cream whipped
Baking Powder Biscuits or Sponge Cake Layers
Combine cranberries, apple, pineapple, sugar and salt and let stand for 2-3 hours. Arrange shortcake fashion on hot biscuits or sponge cake layers. Top with whipped cream.
Mock Strawberry Pie—Bake above mixture in double crust pie.
CRANBERRY MUFFINS
1 cup Cranberries
½ cup sugar
2 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk
3 tablespoons melted butter
Chop cranberries and sprinkle with half the sugar. Sift flour, baking powder, salt and remaining sugar together. Beat egg slightly, combine with milk and melted butter and add to dry ingredients. Stir only until blended. Then fold in cranberries. Transfer to buttered muffin pans and bake in hot oven, 425°F., about 25 minutes. Make 12 medium sized muffins.
CRANBERRY COOKIES
½ cup shortening
½ cup sugar
1 egg, well beaten
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup ten-minute Cranberry Sauce, drained of juice
Cream shortening and sugar together, add egg, dry ingredients, and vanilla. Chill dough. Roll out very thin, shape with round cutter. Place 1 tablespoon Cranberry Sauce on half the round-top with remaining rounds with centremoved. Bake in moderate 375°F., 10-15 minutes.
You can't have too many cookies on hand during the holidays. They fit neatly into meals and snacks, and even may be given as gifts. It is a good idea to make kinds that will keep well, such as Gumdrop Cookies and Fudge Squares.
Melt 3 tablespoons shortening. Add 1 cup sugar and 1 egg, unbeaten. Mix well. Sift 1 cup flour with 1 teaspoon baking powder, ½ teaspoon salt and 3 tablespoons coconut. Add to first mixture. Add ½ teaspoon vanilla, ½ cup milk and ¼ cup chopped nutmeats. Spread in a large flat greased pan, and bake at 275 degrees 25 minutes.
This is a "put-together" recipe—no beating of eggs, no creaming of shortening. It must, however, be cooked slowly so that the squares are soft and moist instead of hard and dry. The measured heat of an electric range is excellent for this; for an electric oven keeps the desired temperature dependably.
Gumdrop Cookies
Mix 2 cups flour with ½ teaspoon salt and 2 cups brown sugar. Add 4 well beaten egg yolks and 2 tablespoons water. Fold in 4 well beaten whites and add 1 cup chopped orange gumdrop slices. Spread thinly in pans. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. An electric range's dependable heat bakes these cookies fine, too.

Latest Electric Own SteamShaped like a giant project and packing the punch of a horsepower beneath its streamlined shell, a new type electric comotive carrying its own steam turbine power plant and capable of whisking a transcontinental train of 15 standard Pullman trains from Chicago to the west coast speeds up to 125 miles an hour was demonstrated to railroad General Electric officials and party of newspapermen at La Pa., this week.
Nearly two years have been spent by General Electric, Union Pacific engineers in designing and building this locomotive. It will do twice the work of conventional locomotive for a pound of fuel and make times the mileage without stop for either fuel or water. In winter weather when the steam-car heating plant is not necessary, locomotive will be able to travel from coast to coast without a single stop for water.
Steam from the boiler will used to make electricity in exile the same manner as is done in public utility plant. This electricity will then be used to gradually turn the powerful motors go to the driving wheels, in the smooth manner with which motor is started. Electricity brought into a unique use in handling. When coasting into a stair or down grade, the six big drivetors act as generators and gradually convert the mechanical energy from the momentum of train into electricity, assists maximum safety and eliminates...
Margaret Carlin and Naomi Carlin, daughters of Dr. and Mrs. Harold G. Carlin, are spending their Christmas vacation from the University of California at Los Angeles at the family home on Crescent avenue. Both young women are junior class students at the university and will return to their classes on January 3.
Christmas dinner should contain the traditional dishes, but it is nice to vary them. Try combining the turkey with ham and liver. Stuff the turkey and bake it in the ordinary manner. When it is about half done, lay slices of ham and liver over it. Return to oven. The turkey will have a new delicious flavor, and the ham and liver will taste better than good!
Serve sweet potatoes instead of mashed potatoes, for a change. Alternate slices of cooked sweet potatoes with slices of orange in a casserole, adding brown sugar and butter to each layer. Pour one-half cup honey over the top, cover, and bake about 45 minutes. If you have an electric roaster, cook these in it, with other parts of the dinner. Or roast the turkey in the electric roaster, and you can use the oven of the range for other cooking.
