Here is California prize Percheron owned by the University of California with Lucille are gamblers or connected in any way with the gambling fraternity. “If the above charge were true the people of Orange county are entitled to the facts. Anyone divulging such facts need not hesitate to openly sponsor the charges. “Again let me quote, ‘He already has mortgaged his soul to Mr. Kaufman, now “front man” for the gamblers and underworld characters. If elected he would be a mere tool in the hands of Mr. Kaufman.’ I know not what Mr. Kaufman's position is with reference to the gamblers; this was the first intimation that I have had that he played the important role charged. ‘I leave that charge, which bears the marks of libel, to Mr. Kaufman, who is well able to take care of himself. But again let me say, Mr. Kaufman did not suggest my candidacy; he has never discussed with me my campaign; he never has told me that he would support me; he has not donated a cent directly or indirectly to my campaign, and I do not know at this very minute whether or not he is going to vote for me, a rather loose ararangement for a mortgageed soul. “Let me say further, I have never had any contact with the gambling elements except as prosecutor in the capacity of city attorney of Anaheim, to which I will shortly refer. I don't know who these gamblers are, except as I came in contact with them in the city of Anaheim, much to their dissatisfaction and chagrin. From the best information I have, that underworld element is supporting two candidates who were rated much higher than I by the committee.” startling; he may rejoice character murder he has plished; he may be over the reactions that have he may feel that he has good job and earned him if he has a scintilla of an iota of regard for integrity, a semblance of the slightest conception makes an honorable man, his conscience with him, shame will overtake remorse overwhelm him. “It is my fear that you will not suffer the pangmented conscience because utter lack of any of the cations or qualities that conscience of an upright citizen of any worth to munity. Committee of 33, you are tools to "rush in," it is your so do as good citizens of the county. But you are tools who are resorting to the to which denizens of the world resort; you are dedecency and manhood, just some, slimy creatures who the light of day, otherwise would have signed your reme quote again, 'The identhe committee's personnel reasons self-evident must rea secret.' The self-evident obvious reasons are that the letter is charged with criminal and the authors, knowing and knowing the malicious' of the statements, know that their identities known they be prosecuted criminally the law. challenge them all to come and divulge their connection this pamphlet. If the truth is spoken therein no harm can come, but the authors know full well that it contains maliciously false and libellous statements. "I am only one against whom was directed this malicious attack, and for myself let me say, if there is anything in my life that makes me unworthy of the position I seek, let him who has this information fearlessly and openly speak and prefer the charge. I will welcome such criticism, and would respect the man or woman who would speak out without equivocation and without concealment. "I have nothing but supreme contempt for him or them who resort to slander, libel and falsification to further their desires, political or otherwise, and my contempt is unmeasurably greater when such vilification is perpetuated behind a screen designated as a 'Committee of 33.'" "The 'committee of 33' charge, in referring to me, 'His candidacy is sponsored and financed by bookie and other gambling interests.' In reply to this scurrilous charge I can only say that not one cent of bookie or gambling money has been, directly or indirectly, received from any gambling sources of any kind or character. My campaign has been entirely financed by myself with the exceptions of a few donations from friends, and these in only small amounts. None of these friends er had any contact with the gambling elements except as prosecutor in the capacity of city attorney of Anaheim, to which I will shortly refer. I don't know who these gamblers are, except as I came in contact with them in the city of Anaheim, much to their dissatisfaction and chagrin. From the best information I have, that underworld element is supporting two candidates who were rated much higher than I by the committee of 33 in their pamphlet of vilification. "In this connection may I be pardoned for calling to your attention the fact that I drafted the first city ordinance in the county of Orange prohibiting the operations of books, being Ordinance No. 600 of the city of Anaheim, by means of which bookies were banished from Anahelm everlastingly. "It is with pride that I also cite the fact that the city of Fullerton later adopted the same ordinance which was tested in the superior court of Orange county and was upheld. I was associated with the city attorney of Fullerton and Mr. Lew Blodgett in this controversy which terminated favorably to the city and unfavorably to the bookies. These facts are matters of public record, available to the committee of 33 had that committee the slightest intention of being fair, and had the inspiration of that committee not been scurrilous vilification and malicious falsification. "I do not claim to be the epitome of righteousness, but I do claim that as a public servant in the city of Anaheim for 12 years my record has been open to public scrutiny, and especially so to any publicity campaign manager who would advance the cause of his candidate by tearing down the characters of other candidates and men in public life. "It is not a difficult thing for a man trained in the newspaper world, when his identify is camouflaged behind a committee of 33 to pour out reams of vilification when his mind and heart are steeped in trickery, treachery and chicanery." "His conceit may lead him to believe he has done something..." JESSE L. "It is my fear that the author will not suffer the pangs of a tormented conscience because of his utter lack of any of these qualifications or qualities that affect the conscience of an upright man or a citizen of any worth to the community. Little does he care that in assassinating the character of any man he casts asperations upon hundreds of others, particularly is this true of a man holding public office by appointment which I have done in the city of Anaheim for 12 years. "If the charges he makes are true, the outstanding men of Anaheim who comprise the city council are likewise assailed. "Can anyone believe that Charles Mann, the mayor of Anaheim, president of the California League of Municipalities, prominent business man for years in Anaheim would tolerate a man pictured as in this pamphlet? Can anyone believe that F. A. Yung- bluth, Leo Sheridan, Charles Pearson, Maury Martenet would retain such a man when they could fire him on a minute's notice? Does anyone believe that these men are so dumb that they would not discover the true character of such a man in 12 years time? "It is unreasonable to think that people with intelligence to vote will not analyze such fantastic charges and duly place them in the category which they deserve. "Perhaps I have given these assertions of the committee of 33 too much attention, but it is said that SAM L.
