Mutual Orange Distributors Find Mesh Bags Appeal to Customers
Based upon the satisfactory results of its supervised experimental shipments, the Mutual Orange Distributors is continuing shipments of citrus fruits in special consumer package bags.
First shipment of this nature was made June 17, when three cars were shipped from the Redlands Foothill Groves, affiliate of the MOD, to New York City. Each car contained 6706 mesh bags; and each bag contained an average of 15 dozen oranges of average size. MOD representatives were on hand in New York upon arrival of the cars to check the consumers reaction to the new package.
In commenting on its plans, the cooperative anhourced today: "Our experimental shipments proved highly satisfactory. The first three cars sold in New York at a price 20c higher than box prices. The fruit arrived in perfect condition and met instant consumer acceptance. Consumers interviewed personally by our representatives stated the fruit in bags was fresher, had its original shape and was not flattened out as is the case where the fruit is packed tight in wooden containers."
"Retail stores reported favorably from the standpoint of having no waste. The consumers readily purchased a bag rather than following the practice of picking over fruit displayed loose and leaving the poorer fruit as a loss to the retailer. The retailer benefitted through this fact and distribution and on the bags handled the retailer was able to operate at a 20 percent mark-up, thus stimulating movement into consumption.
"At present the growers pay about 10 percent of freight costs for wood; that is, the weight of the wooden box. The charge of transporting the wood is identical with that for the fruit. The bags permit more fruit to be carried per car.
"We recognize limitations in this type of operation. We realize that groups which have large investments in lumber holdings may not look with favor on such progressive steps in distribution and that certain types of selling outlets which are not geared to handle more modern packages, such as auctions, may not encourage such distribution. The fact remains, however, that the interests of the growers are paramount and we, as a cooperative selling organization, are going to do all within our power to increase returns to California and Arizona growers by utilizing every modern and available method of effective distribution.
"The consumer package is but one phase of our distribution plans. Others are being worked on which we feel also will prove beneficial to our growers."
No Exemption Made for Married Minors

Retail stores reported favorably from the standpoint of having no waste. The consumers readily purchased a bag rather than following the practice of picking over fruit displayed loose and leaving the poorer fruit as a loss to the retailer. The retailer benefitted through this fact and also because of not having to supply a consumer package.
"The bag contains an average of 1½ dozen oranges of average size. The usual purchase made by a consumer, where the fruit is not in a consumer package, is from ½ to a dozen oranges. Bag sales, therefore, result in benefit to both the grower and retailer, because of the increased consumption brought about by increased unit sales. This is something greatly to be desired in a year of heavy production such as the present one."
"The usual percentage mark-up of retailers is widely variable, being from 30 percent to 150 percent. Retail movement sets the pace for

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH
"Truth" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon on Sunday in all Churches of Christ, Scientist. The Golden Text is from the Psalms: "Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth; unite my heart to fear thy name."
One of the Bible selections in the Lesson-Sermon presents these verses from Proverbs: "By mercy and truth iniquity is purged; and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil. When a man's ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him... A man's heart deserves death."

Are times really bad?
No, answers State Controller Harry B. Riley, who points out that Californians last year paid 28 per cent more income tax than they did the year before. When Riley closed the state's books on June 30, nearly $21,500,000 had been received from this source.

The Lesson - Sermon includes also this statement from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "The divine demand, 'Be ye therefore perfect,' is scientific, and the human footsteps leading to perfection are indispensable. Individuals are consistent who, watching and praying, can run, and not be weary; . . . walk, and not faint,' who gain good rapidly and hold their position, or attain slowly and yield not to discouragement.
When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously He directs our path."
