Jesse Stubbs Visits St. Thomas, Canada Two reports from Jesse Stubbs, Anaheim rancher who is taking a living orange tree to New York PRESIDENT'S WEEK—WASHINGTON — Working at his Hyde Park desk, collarless, in shirtsleeves and seersucker pants, President Roosevelt last week industriously signed or vetoed the bills which congress had left him. He approved with gusto and dispatch the spend-lend, wages and hours, deficiency bill, many others. And during the week he added two executive devices of his own: a raise in pay for all WPA workers in 13 southern states, and a loosening of requirements in bank examinations. With hawk-sharp eye, he vetoes a batch of little pension and claim bills, several efforts to expand veterans' compensation, a $3,260,-000 building program for the bureau of fisheries, a pay-raiser for the immigration and naturalization services, a bill enforcing publicity for WPA subcontractors and material men. These brought his veto record up above 300 since 1933, second only to Grover Cleveland's two-term record of 344 vetoes. Back in Washington, he hurried away from the annual dinner tendered him by the "little cabinet" (assistant and under secretaries) at the sumptuous country house of Undersecretary of State Sumner Welles, to address the people again. When he had finished, no one could doubt that Franklin Roosevelt's immediate objectives now are: To split the country into "liberal" and "conservative" halves politically; to woo the "liberal" half openly, in person; to combat "conservatives" the noncombatant man, and child in time of war. Since the last International Cross meeting in 1934, three have been waged against combatants and noncombatants During the Italo-Ethiopian villages were gass bombed, Ethiopians who had only a vague idea of what slaughtered by the hundred Spanish civil war, heard tillery, efficient new aircraft being used to attack civilians. In the year-old Japanese conflict, Tokyo's have devastated entire security unfortified Chinese towns thousands of women and children. The justification offers these practices is the 20th-concept of war as a total affair. Under this theory nation is mobilized. A worker, a government clerician becomes just assistant a cog in the modern machine as the soldier front. All are legitimate objectives." CLEAVER RESPONSIBLE When a young man or woman aspires to the Medical profession, it is necessary that a solid groundwork of education be laid, on which to build scientific knowledge. After high school, two to four years of college preparation is required for entrance to Medical Schools. Entrance requirements are becoming more rigid each year. During these pre-medical school years, the embryonic doctor majors in studies bearing directly on his medical training, such as Latin, chemistry, biology, physiology and physics. JACKSON DRUG CO. THIS IS No. 2 OF A SERIES TELLING THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE DOCTOR OF TIME The Weekly Newsmagazine Since the last International Red Cross meeting in 1934, three wars have been waged against both combatants and noncombatants. During the Italo-Ethiopian war, Ethiopian villages were gassed and bombed, Ethiopians who probably only a vague idea of war were dugged by the hundreds. In the Spanish civil war, heavy artillery, efficient new aircraft are being used to attack cities and villains. In the year-old Sino-Pakistan conflict, Tokyo's planes have devastated entire sections of fortified Chinese towns, killing thousands of women and children. The justification offered for these practices is the 20th-century concept of war as a totalitarian fair. Under this theory a whole nation is mobilized. A factory worker, a government clerk, a physician becomes just as important a cog in the modern war machine as the soldier at the front. All are legitimate "military objectives." To Swiss citizen Henri Dunant, who in 1859 witnessed the bloody battle of Solferino, Italy between the Franco-Sardinians and the Austrians, the paramount problem was to lessen the hardships of war by caring for the wounded soldier. Dunant started a movement for an international, nonpolitical medical organization with headquarers in traditionally neutral Switzerland, with autonomous supporting units in every civilized nation. Dunant and his associates were able to induce 26 govern- the Japanese refused International Red Cross aid, the Chinese accepted. This aid takes the form of Red Cross fund allotments to reputable hospitals, refugee camps, clinics already established. COMMAND PERFORMANCE—ROME—A battalion of Bersaglieri, crack, sharpshooting troops of the Italian army, was trudging along a dusty road near the town of Faenza one day week when it was overtaken by an official automobile. At the head of the column the car stopped. Out stepped Premier Mussolini, nattily decked in a snow-white uniform of the fascist militia. The 54-year-old duce took his place in front of the battalion, challenged the soldiers to a one-mile trot into town. The Bersaglieri are famed for their ability to move for hours at a steady trot. However, no nimble-footed sharpshooter was brash enough to forge ahead and when the startled populace at Faenza rushed into the streets to welcome il duce, he was still in the lead. Congratulating the Bersaglieri on their condition, he gave their commander 3,000 lire ($157) to buy them special mess kits. WANT HIM BACK!—LONDON—The 44th birthday of the Duke of Windsor passed by in Great Britain last week with no other press notice than a seven word announcement in the London Daily Telegraph. But the society of The Octavians, seyeral hundred Britishers who have banded together to perpetuate the memory of the Duke as Edward VIII, were determined to accord the day more formal recognition. Some 250 members, largely middle-aged men and women, crowded into a second-rate restaurant re-seat the duke on the throne, bases his case on the claim that the 1936 Abdication act, while passed by parliament, is illegal because it was not a mandate from the people. Fortnight ago, however, his cause received its first legal setback. Founder Elton's statement of claim that the act was "Illegitimate" was refused a hearing on the grounds that it was not on the regular schedule of cases. Senator Announces Appointment Tests Senator William Gibbs McAdoo has announced through his Washington office, that he would nominate two cadets to the United State Military academy and one midshipman to the United States naval academy for the 1939 classes on the basis of competitive examinations to be conducted by the United State civil service commission. The examinations, which will last an entire day, will be held October 8, 1938. Applications, however, must be made to the senator in July. Lions Club Meeting Friday is Cancelled The Anaheim Lions club will not hold its regular luncheon meeting at the Ella clubhouse tomorrow. The meeting was cancelled because of the visitation day at Garden Grove yesterday noon. Members of the Anaheim club visited the Garden Grove club in a body. In 1859 witnessed the bloody battle of Solferino, Italy between the Franco-Sardinians and the Austrians, the paramount problem was to lessen the hardships of war caring for the wounded soldier. Dumant started a movement for an international, nonpolitical medical organization with headquarters in traditionally neutral Switzerland, with autonomous supporting units in every civilized nation. Dumant and his associates were able to induce 26 governments to sign agreements guaranteeing respect for the wounded, neutralizing military hospitals, protecting the material and personnel of medical services. Also agreed upon was the use of a white flag bearing a red cross as the international symbol of sanctuary. Not until 1935 did the first flagrant, consistent abuse of the Red Cross symbol occur. Then giant red crosses painted on Ethiopian hospitals became welcome targets for Italian airmen. Next year the Spanish civil war broke, the Red Cross symbol was soon found to be such a liability that the British medical journal "Lancet" philosophized: "The plain fact is that a doctor serving a modern army in any capacity is no more neutral than a munitions worker or artilleryman. Since he is not neutral he will be bombed. When he is bombed he will be compelled to remove or camouflage the Red Cross that no longer protects him." In Spain, military hospitals are now camouflaged, ambulances are painted to look like trees, earth grass. The International Red Cross has maintained neither hospitals nor medical units in Spain, but has concentrated on transferring Rightest refuges to France, an effecting agreements for the release of hostages and in sending from one side to the other messages from members of families split by the civil war. Chief medical aid has gone to Leftist Spain from the Medical Bureau and North American Committee to Aid Spanish Democracy, which have outpatched 80 ambulance units, sent 464,621.85 to Spain for medical and refugee activities, have sent 330,400 worth of goods.
