50 YEARS AGO March 15, 1888 The late heavy rains caused quite an overflow, and the river bed north of town contained much water for some time. At one time it was feared that considerable damage would result. Some reports at to great damage being done to the Fullerton hotel and other houses there were found to have been exaggerated. No damage resulted. Now that the rain is over a considerable activity prevails in our neighboring town. The following are the newly appointed sergeants and corporals of pary G.; Sergeants, First; Thomas; second, Fred C.; third, Charles Kuchel; E. J. Pellegrin; fifth, E. A. sixth, J. J. Peck of the Anaheim Sugar company read before the stockholders of the company in annual meeting at the sugar company's plant north of town Monday afternoon showed the company to be in the best financial condition. Net earnings of the company for the past year total a handsome figure and the prospect for the coming year is bright. His report showed that the plant during the past season was in operation 95 days, and during that time in excess of 58,000 tons of beets were sliced. The year previous only 45,000 tons were handled. The average price per ton paid in the year just closed was $6.72 as compared with $5.68 in 1911. A total of $392,919.22 was paid out to beet growers the past year for beets, or $89,320 more than the year previous. Talks on the sugar business were made by Judge Howard, P. H. Krick, Chas. Eygabroad and others. After adjournment of the meeting a short session of directors was held. A. R. Peck was re-elected president of the company. Wm. McLaughlin, vice-president, and L. H. Multer, secretary and treasurer. Other members of the present board of directors are C. O. Rust, Richard Melrose, E. J. Stimson and C. M. Warner. The regular meeting of the Ballclub on Saturday at Odd Superior court for an order to certain real estate belonging to the estate of Minnie M. Bent which Joseph Helmsen is admistrator. A. Hessel was in town Tuesday from Los Angeles attending business of the Union Brewer company, of which he is presidei. Mrs. B. F. E. Kellogg was town on Tuesday from her west of town on a shopping edition. Mrs. Kellogg is one of pioneer residents of the country, was 80 years of age July, and is as active as my women half her age, she continue in the enjoyment of excel health, and her many friend throughout this section indulge hope that she may be spared more years of usefulness in community which she has gra so long. Mrs. Rodman spent a month in Siam where she was one of three Americans who saw the coronation of the king of Siam. In India at the Durbar she saw the coronation ceremony of King George and Queen Mary. She was in Rome at Easter and had an audience with the Pope. The next regular meeting of the club to be held Saturday, April 5, will be a gathering of the County Federation of Women's clubs. It will be an all-day session to which the ladies are asked to bring their baskets for a basket luncheon. Coffee will be served in the hall. Assemblyman Hans Weisel leaves this morning for Sacraimento to attend the legislative session which begins Monday. He will drive up in his automobile and expects to make the trip in three days. Petition has been filed in the R. Store, $9.50; California V Co., $14.75; Orange County V Co., $16.90; Anaheim Sanitary $34.50. Final sewer connections for Francisco and Los Angeles in a week or two. The third quarterly apportionment of state school funds have been made. The amount apportioned to Anaheim is $2,738, of which $50 is for library purposes. The amount apportioned for each teacher in districts having more than twenty census children is $148 and for each district having less than twenty census children, $48. The amount apportioned to districts having more than seventy and less than ninety census census children is $20 per capita for all in excess of 70. The amount apportioned upon the average daily attendance in each district is $9.25 per capita. The total apportionment is $120,791.25. Thacker Bros. and Mann are busily engaged in shipping Anaheim oranges to Eastern markets. In the center is the Eddie Martin where the pilot was marooned with Pilot Steinmetz for more than 24 hours before being rescued bean fields and the orchard in the picture were completely covered with water. Fremont school were made recently and the old cesspool has been abandoned and will be filled up. Rossberg, manager of the telephone office here, was a little irritated about the flood—and it had nothing to do with his business. Awakened about three with the warning that the flood was coming Rossberg rushed his family to the home of Art Wilmsen. There wasn't any water around Rossberg's when they left, but plenty at Wilmsen's. Rossberg then rushed out to his car to report at his office and found it wouldn't run. It was a long pull to the telephone company's office, but Rossberg was on hand pretty early.
