Motorist, Pedestrian Both Must Exercise Care To Avoid Mishaps
(The Gazette today presents an instructive article, based on recent court decision concerning motor vehicle operation in California, as prepared by Ivan Kelso, Automobile Club of Southern California general counsel.)
Has a motorist a right to continue out of an intersection without stopping when he has entered it on a "go" signal, but finds the directions have changed before he leaves the intersection, and does a pedestrian have a right to enter an intersection in accordance with the directions of a traffic signal, even though he finds a motor vehicle within the intersection which is likely to run him down unless he or the motorist or both take care?
These difficult questions were presented to a jury and the answers of the jury were considered by the appellate court of the second appellate district.
The accident happened at Hollywood boulevard and Vermont avenue, Los Angeles; after dark and during a slight rain. The motorist was southbound and the pedestrian eastbound in the crosswalk at the southerly boundary of the intersection. When the motorist entered this wide and complicated intersection, the signals were in his favor, but they changed in the pedestrian's favor before the point of collision was reached.
Thus both parties were lawfully within the intersection. The pedestrian saw the motorist not only once but three times before the collision occurred, but unfortunately the motorist did not see the pedestrian until the instant of collision.
Notwithstanding both parties were lawfully within the intersection, it was the duty of each to exercise ordinary care to avoid injury to himself or to the other. The jury decided that the pedes

Select-O-Matic On Auto's Radio
Combining perfect radio reception with convenient tuning and the utmost in driving safety. Chevrolet's new and magic-like Select-O-Matic tuning device represents the year's outstanding contribution to the safety, comfort and convenience of modern motorcar travel. Bringing it to the attention of the motoring public this week, M. D. Douglas, Chevrolet parts and accessories manager, points out that like all Chevrolet accessories it embodies the three major purposes of engineering: highway safety, plus comfort and convenience for travelers.
"Chevrolet accessories are custom-built, engineered especially for Chevrolet cars," he said. "Not only do they add to the inherent beauty of the car, but they give Chevrolet drivers the advantages of the latest developments in safety devices. This holds true in Chevrolet's presentation of the newest thing in radio tuning Chevrolet's Select-O-Matic."
"When you consider that, with this new type method of tuning, the driver need not take his eyes off the road to tune in a station, because the Select-O-Matic requires only a slight finger touch on any one of eight push buttons for immediate and accurate reception; that knob-fumbling and station-groping are no longer necessary, thereby reducing traffic hazards; and that motorists of southern California may have their eight favorite station call letters installed in less than five minutes' time at any Chevrolet service department, it must be agreed that here is a three-way assurance of driving enjoyment."
In addition to the Select-O-Matic tuning made available by the eight illuminated push buttons, manual tuning is still possible thus giving the car's groove...
