Last Saturday was a grand day for Anaheim. The excursion under the management of Stanton & Matthews of Los Angeles was most successful. The lots sold were all bona fide purchases. About four hundred persons were in attendance from Los Angeles and this number was swelled by the large turnout from Anaheim and neighboring towns. The scene of operations was near our new hotel of Center street, and there on the verdure covered plot the people were astir, all in the best of spirits. A brass band accompanied the excursion. Fruits of all kinds was served to the visitors. Some of Mr. Theo. Reiser's excellent wine was also served to all who cared to partake of it.
The lots sold are all in a fine location, being on the line of a good paying street car line. At the conclusion of the sale the assemblage repaired to the center of the town and the brass band discoursed 'excellent music in front of Planters hotel. Nothing happened to mar the pleasure of the day and the sale was one of the best ever held in Anaheim.

Besides acquiring a fortune in oil royalties the past year, the Anaheim Union Water company gives further evidence of prosperity in record sales of water to irrigators during 1912. Figures prepared by Secretary Wallop for the board of audit now going over books and documents in his office show total sales during the year of $45,975.60. This represents the largest sale of water in the history of the company.
It is confidently expected that oil royalties during the present year will amount to $125,000. This money will probably be used in making extensive improvements. No dividends will be declared for several years to come.
The company's bonded indebtedness is $130,000.00, and royalties from oil will probably exceed maturing bonds and leave a large amount for permanent improvements.
The board of audit now at work upon books in the secretary's office has found them to be in excellent condition. Stockholders will have an interesting report at their annual meeting on the 25th. The company has made extensive improvements during the past year and will continue that policy. It is in excellent financial condition and the annual meeting will find little to criticise in its operations during the past year.
Rain to the amount of .56 of an inch fell on Thursday and Friday last, making a total of 1.70 for the season, according to Mr. Dickel's gauge. Last year to date 2.20.
Supervisor Schumacher has appointed A. W. Wood road overseer for this district. Mr. Wood succeeds Frank Steadman, who has held the position for several years past.

Welfare Advance Less Last Month
Smallest Net Income For Year is Recorded in December
The smallest net increase during the past 12 months brought the welfare department case load to 3651 as of December 31, an increase of 43 over November, Director Jack W. Snow reported to the board of supervisors Tuesday.
"December figures showed a continued tapering off of the new state applications which resulted from drastically liberalized legislation," Snow pointed out.
A net increase of 216 old age security cases formally approved brought the aged aid load up to 2247. There was a gain of three approved blind cases and a seasonal increase of 51 cases was shown in the indigent list.
"Included in the total agency case load are between 450 and 500 cases which are on a non-relief basis," Snow said.
Percentage administration costs continued at about the same level, showing 7.7 per cent in December as compared with 7.6 per cent in November. This amounted to $2.32 per case in December and $2.11 in November.

Campaign Aimed to Assist Bean Growers Slated
With aa 73,000,000 pound surplus and its attendant marketing problem staring them in the face, California's bean growers today appealed to business for the kind of aid and cooperation which last year saved hundreds of farmers from losses which would have vitally affected their purchasing power.
California's crop is the largest in the state's history and when added to the national surplus of 300,000,000 pounds, growers declare it has become a serious problem.
A pot of baked beans on every California table on Jan. 17, is the first objective of the growers, according to Vernon C. Heil, vice-chairman of a specially formed committee of bean farmers. On that day, 150,000 retail stores will start a nation-wide drive to focus attention on beans while at the same time, hotels, restaurants and railroad dinners have been asked to feature bean dishes on menus.
Southern California growers who are charged with the task of developing the drive in this section of the state, are headed by Vernon C. Heil of Santa Ana. Others on the committee are W. B. Hellis and Steve Griset, Santa Ana; Asa Casey, Irvine, and J. E. Vanhoven, Inglewood.

Dirty Air is Costly to Every Individual
When science and industry finally devise means of "cleaning the air," like it is being done by air-conditioning in many homes and buildings today the actual saving to every person in the United States will be between $10 and $30 a year.
That is the estimate of the United States Public Health service, which has been studying air pollution throughout the country.
In some cities, the public health service found that as much as 100 tons of dirt is contained in one cubic mile of air per year.

Archdiocese of Los Angeles Will Build Major Theological Seminary
Plans for the erection of the first major theological seminary the Catholic church has had in Southern California, an institution of higher education in philosophy, theology and the social sciences to be known as St. John's seminary, were announced in a pastoral letter from the Most Reverend John J. Cantwell, D. D., archbishop of Los Angeles, which was read in all the Catholic church of Los Angeles, Orange and Santa Barbara counties last Sunday.
Launching of a campaign throughout the archdiocese for $1,500,000 to construct the seminary and endow it for the immediate future was also announced in the pastoral and details of this important feature of the momentous project, it is stated, are already in the hands of an organization of lay and clerical parish committees, in preparation for a concentrated campaign that is to open on February 13.
St. John's seminary, construction of which is planned to begin within the next few months, will be erected on a commanding site near Camarillo, in Ventura county, part of 100 acres of land which was a gift of the late Juan Camarillo. An imposing group of buildings, surrounding a cloister court and dominated by the tower of the chapel, will be constructed of reinforced concrete, engineered against earth shocks and including classrooms, laboratories, living quarters and other facilities for a community of about two hundred seminarians and faculty members.
Erection of St. John's seminary will permit candidates for the priesthood from Los Angeles and vicinity to complete their studies in this archdiocese instead of being lowering their preparatory courses at Los Angeles college, a junior seminary.
It has been the desire and plan of Archbishop Cantwell, it is declared, to bring about the erection of a major seminary in the archdiocese of Los Angeles.
