Charles Knowlton To Conduct Horticultural Tests In India Problems of starting a test orchard with a variety of deciduous and citrus fruits almost complete across the world from California in the state of Patalia, north central India, have been accepted by Charles Knowlton, Fullerton horticulturist, as the result of a commission from Dewan Jermani Das, minister of agriculture in the little state high in the Himaya mountains, it was announced recently. The commission from the state of Patalia came to Knowlton through his friend, Robert Hodgson, chief of the department of subtropical horticulture at U. C. A. and assistant director of the California Citrus Experiment station at Riverside, who is now in Indian as adviser to H. H. Dewan Jermani Das. Knowlton hopes to sail for Bombay on a Dollar line world cruise ship about Dec. 28. Ventilated storage facilities will be available on this steamer for his shipment of young trees. Knowlton will purchase the acres in California and accompany them to India where he will be met by a representative of Patiala state. He will personally supervise the handling, planting and care of the trees. The offer includes traveling expenses from California to Patiala state and full maintenance during the stay in India with a salary in addition. Knowlton would be quartered in a government guest house for a period of not less than 6 months while the trees were being planted and becoming allelimated. During this period he would also have the problem of instructing natives in the care of the trees including irrigation during the dry season. Knowlton is now directing the work of fumigating all trees provided and of preparing them for the six-week ocean voyage they will have to take to reach Bombay. The trees will provide a test orchard with a total area of about 30 acres. Varieties include apples, pears, cherries, peaches, plums, grapes, walnuts, quince, loquats and miscellaneous with a few citrus varieties. Captain Frank Jansen, retired seaman, will conduct the classes, offering instruction in all phases. Acts and Facts of Townsendism By Walter R. Robb (This is a non-political, non-partisan column dealing in Townsend news and views, and written by a prominent Townsend leader. Any opinions which are expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Gazette). In this column last week it was argued that technological improvements in methods of wealth production had resulted in much of the nation's unemployment with a consequent reduction in consumers' demand. It was pointed out that reduced power of the people to consume gave still further addition to the unemployment problem. The point was made that in a nation where the profit system is the base of government, prosperity of a continuous character can only be realized when a harmony in the power of the people to buy and consume is in balance with the ability of the nation to produce wealth. It was also argued that when gainful wage employment proves to be permanently inadequate as a medium for furnishing needed buying and consuming power, then some other method must of necessity be invented. Last week's column concluded by pointing out the Townsend plan method would FINER·GOES FARTHER! On postcards mailed to registered owners after Christmas will be stated the assessed valuation and license tax, at the legal rate of $1.75 per 100 valuation, on each car. Applicants then will take the postal, the 1936 registration certification fee and tax amount to the ficate, and $3 passenger car regist local motor vehicle department office, and obtain new number plates. Failure to receive the postcard by the first of the year may mean that state records do not show your present address. In such event, registrants should present their 1936 registration certificates to the local renewal office, where the certificate will be rated according to the state motor vehicle valuation book, the proper fee collected, and 1937 plates issued. Those who fail to renew registration before midnight, February 4, will be required by state law to pay double the registration fee and license tax. Scriptural citations in the Lesson-Sermon include the verses from II Timothy: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that life of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works;" and the verses from Romans: "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope." One of the passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, states: "I have demonstrated through Mind the effects of Truth on the health, longevity, and morals of men; and I have found nothing in ancient or in modern systems on which to found my own, except the teachings and demonstrations of our great Master and the lives of prophets and apostles." rest of the public, then there will be general approval of the Townsend plan method. What the people want now is speedy solution of the unemployment problem and its attendant evils. If the Townsend plan can do the trick then well and good—"let's have it" the people will say. (To be continued next week) RESPONSIBLE THE SANITARY LAUNDRY Scientific tests have proven that clothes washed by the SANITARY'S METHOD SHOWS LESS LOSS OF STRENGTH than home washing. When you send your bundle to us your clothes are properly classified according to fabric and colors—correctly washed and rinsed through 8 or 10 changes of water zero soft, at controlled temperatures and the excess moisture carefully removed by centrifugal force instead of harmful wringing. All fragile and delicate garments are washed in net bags that act as shock absorbers and prevent any wear on the goods. This is according to the formula of the American Institute of Laundering, of which we are a member, who are an authority in laundering and washability of fabrics. Here is another letter from a valued customer: Dear Sirs: This week I sent a large linen table cloth which I value greatly. Yesterday it was delivered, and I am so well pleased with the result that I wish to express my sincere appreciation for a very fine piece of work. It was beautifully done.
