New Monument Region Has Several Unusual Features What the west's newest national monument offers to sightseeing motorists was surveyed by a road charting crew of the Automobile Club of Southern California this week. Approximately 300 miles of roads within and bordering the unique desert region of 825,340 acres, now known as Joshua Tree National monument, were covered by the scouts. More than half of the mileage comprised excellent natural gravel, while the balance consisted of undeveloped road. Climaxing the numerous allurements of the region is Inspiration Point available by fair graded road. It offers an unequal view from the 5400-foot elevation of San Jacinto and neighboring mountains and the Coachella valley. On clear days the visitor can see Indio, 22 feet below sea level, Palm Springs, the Salton Sea and even the Gulf of Lower California and peaks in Mexico. Interesting attractions include Quail Springs, Barkers Dam which holds a small lake bordered by willows and pionpines, "Pine City" where amazing rock formations are found, and the areas of vast boulders such as White Tanks, Split Rock Tank, Live Oak Tank and Squaw Tank. Rattlesnake canyon, Forty-nine Palm canyon and the Gold Park mining area are other points of interest. Many of them, revealed only recently, have not as yet been marked by signposts and are somewhat difficult to find. The grwoth of Joshua trees Spanish dagger greasewood pinon pine and cacti of many types is profuse. Accommodations are available only at Twenty-Nine Palms and Morongo Valley and it is advisable to make reservations in advance. London Exhibit is Shown at Library Twenty years ago last Sunday Jack London, one of California's native sons whose adventurous experiences made interesting fiction, died at his home in the "Valley of the Moon," at Glen Ellen, Sonoma county. Echoes of his varied career as seaman, whaler, gold seeker in the Klondike, hobo in the middle West, and wanderer in the South Seas are sounded in his stories, several of which are being shown in first editions at the Huntington library now. The exhibit will remain on view during November and December. Some of London's earliest literary outpourings, such as the "Cruise of the Dazzler" (1902), a rattling good adventure story written for boys, and "The People of the Abyss" (1903), a serious investigation of slum conditions in London, are exhibited. Manuscripts from his hand or his typewriter include a sonnet written while he was still a struggling unknown writer. In 16 years Jack London published 43 volumes and seven more have been issued since his death. The Huntington library has a large proportion of the original manuscripts of London's writings. Pedestrians Are Accident Cause Blame for automobile accidents, usually placed at the door of the motorists, is sometimes misplaced, according to Ray Ingels, director of the state motor vehicle department, who says that oftimes pedestrians are responsible for smash-ups. Last year, Ingels says, there were 9,947 pedestrians involved in traffic accidents and in at least 3,324 of these, pedestrians themselves, were directly responsible for the accident. Carelessness of pedestrians accounted for 1518 accidents, the director said, while drunkenness accounted for 928. Five hundred and forty five pedestrians were injured because they became confused in traffic, 236 were struck because their view was obstructed and ninety seven because they had physical defects. "Pedestrians pay a heavy price for carelessness," Ingels declared. "In most accidents involving a vehicle and a pedestrian the man on foot finds himself hopelessly outclassed. These accidents have a high fatality record." Nearly all pedestrian-vehicle accidents are unnecessary and could have been avoided and had 1100 pedestrians been more alert last year, they would have been alive today." There are two reasons why we allow our neighbor free speech. It is his lawful right, and we are afraid to hit him. by windows and plumbing, The City" where amazing rock formations are found, and the areas of vast boulders such as White Tanks, Split Rock Tank, Live Oak Tank and Squaw Tank. CHURCHES OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST A Thanksgiving Day service will be conducted on Thursday, in First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chartres and Philadelphia. The subject of the Lesson-Sermon is "Thanksgiving" and the Golden Text is from Psalms: "I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving." Among the Bible citations in the Lesson-Sermon are those verses from Paul's Epistle to the Philippians: "Rejoice in the Lord alway; and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." The Lesson-Sermon presents also these words from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "Whatever inspires with wisdom, Truth, or Love—be it song, sermon, or Science—blesses the human family with crumbs of comfort from Christ’s table, feeding the hungry and giving living waters to the thirsty." Testimonies appropriate for the occasion will be given by Christian Scientists in the congregations. TOASTMasters Club Hears Six Speakers Six members of the Anaheim Toastmasters club gave talks at the regular meeting of the organization last night at the Marigold cafe. A.," Phil LeTourneau, "The Automobile Show," Fred Kahlen, "Social Security Legislation," Paul Demaree, "Off the Beaten Path," John Kennedy, "The Supreme Court and the Constitution," and Joe Elliott, "Thanksgiving."
